Can a host cut off some traffic to your site if they want to? I uslally get 30,000 page views a day but i've noticed wed-friday that on every other week it seems i only get 20,000 page views on thouse days is my host cuting me off? or is it just my site? Its always there when i go to it can they not allow a ceartaion part of the US not to get to it? why would i think this? because my host says that they have unlimited traffic and on the 13 of July i've used up 21gb already for this month......what do you think?

Im looking at a RaQ3 what kind of up keep do I have to do on one? or does the host do it all? i was looking at one from hispeedhosting i seen on the cobalt site where you can reboot if you need to why would you?

It depends partly on what software/server the host is using, but theoretically it is quite possible.

It is quite easy for a host to block certain people from seeing your site by doing IP blocking. However, because IP addressing around regions isn't uniform, it can be a bit tricky trying to block out all of a suburb of New York, for example.

Unfortunately your host seems to be one who's endorsing the term 'unlimited traffic'. If you look around the forum (i.e. search for 'unlimited traffic' posts) you'll see there is no such thing as unlimited traffic. And since you've already used 21 GBs (and it's only the middle of the month), then it's obvious the host is having tremendous trouble keeping up with your usage, thus occasionally locking you and your visitors out of your site. Hosts need to pay for bandwidth and if you're not careful, they can easily shut you down.

My question is : who is your host? I'd like to look at their site and tell you exactly what they specify and/or what they charge.

As for getting a RAQ3, they are ideal for beginners, but as with all dedicated servers, they require a certain amount of upkeep. There are others who can advise you on how to take care of a dedicated server (Duster, can you help?), but you need to be careful of your initial investment, and the amount of time you have to take care of it.

Hope this helps.

Its hosted buy CommuniTech.Net.....I mailed them (a week ago) and asked if i was in any danger and they said no......but maybe thats because they stop 10,000 people for 3 days every other week, i just find it strange as to how i get 10,000 less at the end of the week then on the following week i get 30,000 like i always do.

What exactly would i need to do for up keep if i had my on RaQ3 this is what hispeed says......thanks for the help

I dont think i need to back everything up do i? My site is not that important but i always keep a copy of it on my hard drive just in case. As far as rebooting is that something you would have to do weekly or monthly? I know when i reboot my pc after using it all day the ram goes back up.

Yes. I have information on my site to help dispel the secrecy about server management and help people get started. More would make the jump to dedicated servers if they knew just what was required of them. With a good support department, an ongoing willingness to learn, and the proper attitude, server management is not too daunting a task.

Got to http://techcellence.net and select the right side menu I'll be adding more to it this week-end. There will be more detailed coverage on security, moving from one host to another, and other topics, in addition to the material already there.

Diana,

As far as traffic goes, there may be other explanations. I've known for a long time how the traffic varies on my site by the day of the week. I have an informational resource about scuba diving. Traffic is lowest on week-ends and heavy on Mondays. I know some reasons are that people are out diving and doing other things on week-ends and some use computers at work for access.

On Mondays, when many are back to work and they have access once again, traffic peaks as they access the forums and see what they missed over the week-end.

You might consider similar reasons as regards traffic flow on your site. Examine each day of the week and chart the traffic. It may likely reveal a pattern.

Your bandwidth is pretty high for a shared server, and it may be time to be moving to a dedicated one. Most guides I've seen suggest it when you hit 15 gb monthly on a consistent basis.

Cobalt RAQ servers, thogh limited in some respects, have the advantage of a control panel especially geared for beginners. It is reported to do most any function they will need for server management.

An alternative is to move to the more robust Intel architecture server and be prepared to learn more. Ultimately, I think you may find it more rewarding. See my earlier post above. I think you may find it helpful.

I'll be addressing upkeep, probably this week end. I've had my own server two months now and write the articles as new things come up. Thus, it's an ongoing series. I have a revision dat eon each pages so it is easy to see when it was last updates and if any information has been added since a prior visit.
