Hi,

To be able to put up your web files you'll need to choose a host...

You may find some of the information available at http://www.HostHelp.com helpful in your search as it explains much of the terminology you'll be seeing around. Once you have an idea of what type of hosting account you require sites like this one can help you to choose the most appropriate host.

Well you already paid about 300% more than you should have for the domain name, so whatever you do, DO NOT get a hosting account at Network Solutions, or you will be spending way too much for your hosting as well as the domain name.

This was all i needed to see about Network Solutions Hosting to know to stay far away....this is cut and paste from their FAQ:

"Can I upgrade from a 3-page website to a 6-page site?"

You don't even want the answer to that, do you?....lol

I've got the whole process outlined at http://techcellence.net Look on the right side menu and select How To Get A Web Site for Your Business.

You may be in a hurry, but I can't stress how important it is to make the right choice in a host. It will cost you time and money if you make a hasty choice and it happens to be the wrong one.

Chicken and friends..

You don't have to pay by the page. Tthe hosting firm of http://deweycheathamandhowe.com sells by the half page so you don't have to pay for anymore than you use.

Hey Greg,

I hope you give a partial refund if you leave a participle dangling.

try dogma as a provider , they're pretty cheap and they done well with me and my site: www.marblemasters.co.uk (http://www.marblemasters.co.uk) , and you caneven go to their help pages which tell u how to upload all that stuff in the members section , trust me i'm sticking to them www.dogma-is.com (http://www.dogma-is.com)

Can anyone even tell me how much bandwidth dogma allows on each account?! I can't seem to find it. I wouldn't sign up with them unless i atleast knew how much bandwidth they allow, and what they charge for more bandwidth. They don't even have a FAQ or TOS section, atleast that i can find.

Also, most hosts, including me, have full feature control panels and online manuals to help you upload and manage your site.

Dear Sawarkar,

Come on experts, give Sawarkar a break. Guide him through the process!

Sawarkar - Do not expect that you will be able to upload within an hour! It takes some time (days).

Step one is to get an excellent webhosting company. There are 1,000s of them, but be very, very careful. There are many bad ones.

Step two is to get a FTP-transfer programme, so you can upload your site. The Experts will be able to make suggestions. I use WS-FTP from Ipswitch.com. (Dear Matt, I apologise for the promotion.)

Come on experts, give him some more advice on where to go and what to read!

Well, for one thing your wrong...I myself can set up an account in about 10 minutes, they are then able to upload their site.

If your site took days to set up and get an IP to upload to, your host is much too slow.

I think he can and should expect to be able to upload within 1 hour!

He should email a bunch of hosts with the same questions, and see who replies fast and answers all your questions.

Greg,

My webhosting company told me the following in an e-mail - "Please remember that it can take two or three days for your domain name to be activated, it takes this long as all the other internet servers in the world have to recognise your domain name."

And than what does Sawarkar do? I mean, who does not want to visit Thailand via Sawarkar's website?

Step two is the FTP-programme isn't it? There must be a massive amount of choice in FTP-programmes?

You get the IP within 1 hour, that's all you need to upload it.

I usually tranfer the domain 1-2 days before i sign up for the host account, then when i sign up, i get the IP and the domain both working within the hour.

Ask Martie....i signed up to her hosting at http://www.hostcaters.com a few weeks ago and i had my domain working in about 15 minutes! :P

Greg,

I bought some domain names through Bulkregister.com, but I am not really able to change the IP-adress over there. I can change the name server, but I seem unable to change the IP-address. It has one default number for all the names you buy there, which seems a little strange to me.

What do you use to upload? There must be free FTP-programmes around.

By the way, is Sawarkar still with us?

At BulkRegister, all you have to do is change the nameservers, and they will automatically change the IP #'s to reflect the nameservers you entered, so don't worry about that.

When you buy a domain, you usually (most places) have to put in nameservers right away...BulkRegister lets you use their nameservers by default, this way you can buy domains without using them. So just change the default ones when you want to use the domain.

I own WS FTP Pro, but i beleive they have an LE version for free at http://www.ipswitch.com/ , but i am not sure.

I don't know if sawarkar is still with us, i would assume he is pretty confused now, considering he paid too much for his domian, and thought he bought hosting with it, now he still has to buy hosting somewhere, and i hate changing nameservers or anything else at NSI, they are so slow and make a lot of errors.

Greg,

I use the WS-FTP Pro-version from www.ipswitch.com. (http://www.ipswitch.com.) One month free evaluation and than pay-time!

Sawarkar should be alright, he has just one domain name. The $10/$25 difference is not too bad. Last year, I bought 15 domain names in UK for $125/each because I had never heard of cheaper US-deals. I get tears in my eyes when I think of it. I am happily surprised by the cost of webhosting though. I expected to pay up to $50-$100/month per domain name.

I must admit that I expected webhosting to be included in the deal with networksolutions, for at least a year. Bt they have a nice website so us starters fall for it.

What is the next step for Sawarkar? He must have an e-commerce site and accept orders. That requires downloading? (I do not have an e-commerce site.) Downloading works with FTP as well?

sawarkar_shraddha,

it seems everyone wants to argue between themselves, rather than answer your questions.

It looks as if you have purchased the domain name via NSI's higher priced web based solution (the one at $115ish). Slightly high price, but your choice. I'm not too clued up with this approach, as I use Dotster, but I guess the theory is the same.

The first thing you need to do is find a hosting provider. This is an important step, as you do not want to have to change hosts in the near future, as it is a pain in the arse. Therefore, sit down and think what you want to do with your site now and in the next 6 months. This should help you build a list of features you need, you should also have an idea of budget.

Use sites like HostInvestigator.com to look for hosts that match your needs, and are within your budget. Draw up a short list, and email them asking some questions. The content of the questions do not matter that much, the main point of the excerise is to measure how quick they respond. If they are slow to respond to prospective customers, it might indicate that you will have slow support response in future. Also post questions to this forum about your shortlist, and wait for replies.

When you have decided on your host, sign up as per normal. If you get a dedicated IP address, you can start uploaded your site via FTP as soon as you get the IP. If you get a shared IP, you can still upload straight away via the shared IP address. The hosting company will email you instructions on this when you sign up.

Despite Gerard being shot down in flames regarding time, he IS correct. Your site will be available to upload immediately, but nobody will be able to access it via your URL for up to 2 days after you have updated your NSI config to point to the new server (they have a help file on their site on how to do this). This is due to propogation around the Internet of the DNS structure. However, if you have a dedicated IP, you can call it up in your web browser by the IP straight away. If you are a shared IP, the hosting company gives you a temporary URL based on your domain name and theirs. E.G http://thailandtourists.halfpricehosting.com. Naturally, this is not what you want people to access by, but it does give you a chance to test your site prior to other people accessing it.

If you need anything else, just ask, someone will answer (hopefully!)
