no problems here, speedy as usual

do you actually bother to test it from more than one ISP account before you tell us ??

maybe something you should do in future ?? :stickout

xstrike, it is a good suggestion, however telling him how might have been more helpful.

An example of a list of place you can trace from is:

jeff,

next time you fail to connect to a site, goto http://www.traceroute.org/ and try it from different parts of the country/world. That website is a pretty good tool.

The first place I go when I'm not sure whether a site is up or down is Yahoo!'s traceroute:

my favourite traceroute place:

http://visualroute.datametrics.com

(for a list of servers around the world where you can start your traceroute: http://www.visualware.com/visualroute/livedemo.html)

heck... you can even know the location of the server anywhere in the world :)

cheers,

Jeff, maybe you misunderstood my post? (*slaps self with trout*) I realize you are asking a question, and it doesn't bother me (???). It isn't silly at all...

I guess I didn't explain things well enough (apparently since you somehow though I was bagging on you in same way). Please let me explain it in another way...

The link I posted http://www.ispworld.com/Find_Backbone.htm and zolbian http://www.traceroute.org/ (and IntelligentHosting.com and dektong) posted are places where you can go and type in weinbar.com. What you will be doing is checking the connection from *another* ISP (like you said, you had a feeling only *your* ISP couldn't connect to the site).

These links will confirm or deny this by running a trace from a differnt ISP (other than your own). By doing this you should be able to get an idea if it is 'just you' as they say, or if the problem is worldwide (not 'just you'). If you can't connect from a few of the links on these sites, then the problems lies either with the server that weinbar.com is on, or the network, etc.

If you are ever unsure of what all those numbers mean or may indicate, feel free to post the long sets here (from a few different tests), and someone will be able to help you analyze the results.

I hope this clears up the misunderstanding, but if not please PM me and I'll be glad to explain the meaning of my previous post.

Very Well explained Chicken.

Normally if i suspect downtime i will carry out the following procedures:

1. Ping From My Own Machine - this will tell you if it is a DoS attack as single pings might get through every couple of minutes

2. Trace Route from my own machine - this will show me where the problem lies, if it is close to my own network then it will give me an answer

3. Trace Route from another high speed source - this will tell you if the traceroute ends at the same network again or if it actually gets through.

4. If none of the above work i will traceroute from at least 2 other globally situated sources, during this barrage i will leave my ping running on my own machine and the traceroute running on my own machine on continuous scan, this will tell me the moment the mechine comes available to myself.

Its all kinda complicated finding out "Who" is causing a web site to fail, but always remember, for you to view a web page you are normally relying on about 10 + machines being in FULL working order for your request to succeed.

I would also be happy to give you a quick guided tour of how things work, although Chicken jumped into the offer before me ;)

I also apologise if my first comment was a little "bland" and less descriptive than is required.

Userful Sites As Follows:

*And others that people have already mentioned

Enjoy :-)
