dbbrock1 02-26-2003, 06:18 PM What would I get out of it if I helped you program it?
hekwu 02-26-2003, 07:05 PM I can only suggest one url: http://www.elance.com . I use this all the time. You have to be carefull about who you pick (ie get what you pay for). Place the urls up and wait for bids. Also, ensure you put in your write-up that you will not pay until the job is at least 75% done (or totally completed) -- or pay at 25%, 50%, etc. This will keep the sorry as_es from bidding.
essexguy 02-26-2003, 07:19 PM It does sound like a large project. There are alot of sites with the ability to play games on their servers, and you need to be sure if their is a market for it.
Sites like www.zone.com have had alot of financial backing and probably a team of developers working on the site.
But hey if your determined then go for it. We all look forward to seeing the replacement for yahoo games :)
TATE_DRAGON 02-26-2003, 07:49 PM Im not trying o make a Big a$$ site for everyone Just my friends and I.. Not like 50,000 people lol
essexguy 02-26-2003, 07:50 PM Hehe, oh well. I got a bit carried away. :)
TATE_DRAGON 02-26-2003, 07:52 PM lol... I only need something simple Not something as complex as zone.

Tate, I think you should address this question. Not everyone would help you make such a robust web site that requires a lot of resources and knowledge to create for "Just my friends and I"
I personally think you should take the first step and start learning how those sites work and what kind of knowledge you would need to create one. When you encounter specific questions like with programming etc, then you should request help and not start out with "Need help making a site like this".
Also - why not just use zone.com and pogo.com if only you and your friends are going to play on it?
TATE_DRAGON 02-26-2003, 07:57 PM I want to Learn thats wat im asking.. I want to design my own Site like pogo but noone seems to know how.

You are a freakin' genius!
essexguy 02-26-2003, 08:00 PM hey tate, go for it. There would be nothing more satisfying than having my own server to run games off, although personally i would turn it into an Unreal Tournament 2003 server. :)
TATE_DRAGON 02-26-2003, 08:00 PM I do play on zone/pogo but i want my own design!!!!!! Dang u people smart A$$. I want to learn how to make a game room.

50,000 people at a time? If you mean 50,000 visitors per day, you would need a nice dual xeon server. Rackshack has a few on sale for about $400/month with a setup fee.
CyberSol 02-26-2003, 09:28 PM The Zone as us Zoners call it is a MSN (Microsoft) creation so yes it had alot of financial backing
PaPua 02-26-2003, 09:50 PM huge project,
how much is pay
This is really not a big deal, look into cookies, when a user signs up record the username/password in a db ,when a user logs in set a cookie, whan a user wants to play a game verify the cookie. Not a big deal.
gmarik 03-01-2003, 01:20 PM I've got a good registration script, but I don't know nothing about chess, no idea. But I can send you first part of the code ...
WebmastTroy 03-01-2003, 04:04 PM Having a sign up form and having online games are 2 COMPLETELY different things. COMPLETELY different.
You're taking the wrong approach if it's just for you and your friends. Unless you're friends with half the U.S., it's just not going to work. You will put WAY too much time and/or money (paying someone else to do it) to make it even CLOSE to reasonable.
You don't appear to have any programming experience (you seem like it shouldn't be that big of a deal) so for you to go from nothing to an expert Java (or VB, etc.) programmer is going to take a long, long time.
You have to approach it is something you will advertise like CRAZY and will advertise to all kinds of people or you're going to lose mucho bucks.
I think the host and servers you choose are the least of your concerns at this point. Yeah, you can get $120/mo. servers at rackshack but you'll never pay that until the thing is developed first.
gmarik 03-01-2003, 07:55 PM Still, there are very advanced php programmers in Russia, who work for a low wage. More info @ phpclub.net (no advertising, just the community)
