As a web designer, I offer clients in my local area a package deal which also includes a free domain name where I do the registration, design their web pages and finally upload their site to my Host's server which I am a reseller.

Most clients do not know how to go about and the procedures from registering a domain, getting a space on a server to setting up correctly for it to work. From experience most prospective clients alway leave it to us to do everything for them. As to your question....Yes, I register it for them in most cases if they don't have a domain name and as I am not a reseller, I pay the market price. I register all my domains at 000domain.com as their support and cpanel is excellant in my opinion.

In the contract and quotation with clients, the domain name belongs to them and should they terminate their contract, all info(domain registrar username & password) will be passed on to them for whoever takes over their business.

ehh just doing a little thinking but when someone fills out my form and if they click the yes button to register a new domain how will that work. I want the form to be mailed to me but if they want to register a new domain they need to do a look up.

So how do you all do this when you have a register new domain on your oder form for a hosting package?

We're partnered with OpenSRS, a top level domain registrar. They only work with resellers...end customers cannot go to them directly to purchase domain names. The cost of a domain name with OpenSRS is US$10 per year. There are a few scripts you need to implement yourself, but once you have that going, you're all set to sell domains. If you don't have much of a budget, then OpenSRS may not be the best solution however, since they require that you purchase a minimum of 25 domains at a time, paid by check or credit card. Visit www.opensrs.net for more info :)

Well, it really depends on what merchant you use. If you are using RevEcom then send me an email and I can probably help you create one order form that would calculate teh total of everything they order and charge them that on Revecom website.

OpenSRS rocks. What surprises/perplexes me is why more people don't use them directly (instead of going through places like 000domains, etc. which seem to be very popular).

25 domains isn't that much.

I also like the fact that you can pay OpenSRS by check, which is much easier for our own accounting than having hundreds of credit card charges.

I know!!! They really are great. Their scripts are great, and the support they provide is top notch. I read somewhere that while Network Solutions usage is dropping dramatically, OpenSRS is the fastest growing top level domain registrar...I thought you'd find that bit of information interesting :)

Of course Network Solutions is losing business! They were a monopoly not long ago. :-)

Besides who wants to pay $35 a year for something when you can get the same thing for as low as $10 a year somewhere else? Also, many of the other registrar's are much easier to use. NS makes everything so hard to do. It sometimes takes weeks to get anything done, unless you pay them extra to "expidite" your request.

Take care,

Brian

BulkRegister is still #2 in the most domains registered. They have a great system, and they do have a system like OpenSRS, but it is a LOT more complicated API.

Jumpline was working with BR before to create a thing called OpenEgg which we were lucky enough to be one of the 30 first companies to use. But then BR laid off some employees and they had problems with the BR API so that got delayed. Its been almost a year now. Once Jumpline gets thier ICANN accrediation(sp) I think they are going to try it again with thier system. Its snazzy, manages billing and all kinds of cool stuff.
