View Full Version : SE ranking question
Hostlead 02-26-2003, 08:35 AM | Hello,
I have a question.
if a domain is number 1 under a certain keyword and let's say their domain is mydomain.com
if I buy mydomains.com and copy their exact content ( except the email addresses ), submit the website to the search engines, and wait long enough. Do you think I will get anywhere close to the domain without the 's'?
Later I'd just put my content on the website.

You'll probably get a note (if not a summons) from their attorney before anything else.
Copyrights law aside, it's just NOT RIGHT man! AND there are MANY legitimate ways to get to the top. |
JonathanVH 02-26-2003, 09:31 AM | As above, that is probably not the best idea. If they are #1 in SE rankings, they probably have something or someone working on their side and would not think twice about slapping you down if you registered their domain, but with an extra letter in it. |
pixelvision 02-26-2003, 09:44 AM Yep, its a sneaky thing to do. Other factors like link popularity also come in to play so even if you did copy their site you might still not get ranked up there. |
Hostlead 02-26-2003, 10:56 AM no it's a personal site that is totally lost in the top10 :D
the site could be making hundreds of $$$ every day..but that guy is not using it correctly :)
I'd later on just put my site on it..not keep their content
it's just an idea that I had..I know it is sneaky, :(

That's why there are Search Engine Optimization professionals in the first place. ;) |

TemplateGuy 02-27-2003, 12:11 AM I'll give you a tip:
Don't rip other peoples sites in the first place:
www.tophosts.com
www.hostlead.com
Thats pretty damn close, especially the content, so I'd better remove it if I were you.

Well, putting the ethical questions aside and just answering this from the technical standpoint, it wouldn't be likely to be effective on major search engines, like Google. They try to avoid indexing duplicate content, so if you copy them exactly one of you might be dropped. Since you'll have both the more recent entry date and the lower PageRank, they should drop you. If that happens, no telling when you might get back in.
The plan of "later" putting your own content in will defeat the purpose: search engines respider and reindex. Your new content will mean new rankings, so if copying them did manage to get you near them once you change the content whatever you gained would be lost.
Of course, there's no reason why you couldn't produce content that would rank better than them from the beginning, is there?
Finally, the existence of the 's' in the domain name is of negligible effect, if any. |
