Hi,

I have a dedicated server with Catalog.com for my webhosting business.

I am facing the worst time today, when my server is no way reachable. The pager message has been of no use. They have however notified on their forums that there has been a storm in Oklahoma and some servers might not be available due to power outage.

:( I hope they must have had sufficient power backup arrangement.

Anyways.

My server has been unreachable for 12 hours already. This is getting unbelievable, surely Catalog should have something in place to deal with this??!

I live in Oklahoma, and the weather today is great..
Can't be quite sure about the rest of the state but I'm sure its the same.. But we did have storms yesterday....

My company has several machines with catalog, we have been trying to contact them for many hours now, with no response.

Surely the situation cannot be caused by weather, one would assume any decent data center would have facilities in place for such occasions?

It's ridiculous. And nobody has been answering any emails or phone calls. It's like they dropped off the face of the earth. The least they could do is to let us all know what is happening and what is being done.

Hmm we live in kansas so i know of any problems both in the KS and MO area, while there was storms that did product tornados, i was informed that any power knocked out has been restored, so im not sure why your still down...

Even if the power was knocked out, they should still have a backup generator. Unless, the fiber was actually knocked down, there should be no reason why they would be down so long. And as I always recommend, always have a satellite internet connection as a backup.

I was reading about a 1mb up/down satellite solution a few days ago too. Better to have everyone use a 1mb line then no lines at all!

Fiber runs underground, it would be virutally impossible for a storm to knock out fiber...

I didnt even know catalog.com had facilities in OK

The Prohacker

Well OK does have one of the cheapest coast of running a facilatiy, thats why MCI has a major tech support center here.

As far as the fiber, most of the fiber in Oklahoma is leased or shared, so if a major backbone went down in my area, it would take my cable out also. So looks like it would be a centeral NOC problem....

I've been trying a traceroute to bulletin.catalog.com (http://net.yahoo.com/cgi-bin/trace.sh?209.217.51.8)...I don't quite understand what the system returns:
Traceroute Output
FROM net.yahoo.com TO 209.217.51.8.

traceroute to 209.217.51.8 (209.217.51.8), 30 hops max, 40 byte packets
1 216.145.48.2 (216.145.48.2) 0.504 ms 0.358 ms 0.344 ms
2 216.145.48.2 (216.145.48.2) 0.380 ms !H * *
3 v998.snv-io-rtr1.yahoo.com (216.145.48.2) 0.431 ms !H * 0.440 ms !H

Why does it not even get past the Yahoo servers?

(Traceroute to catalog.com (http://net.yahoo.com/cgi-bin/trace.sh?209.217.46.120), which is hosted elsewhere, works fine...)

I registered just to reply to this thread. :(

I have a dedicated server with catalog.com too. This morning I sent email and left voice mail. Then I attempted to send them another email and it bounced back to me (dedicated@catalog.com was apparently forwarding to dworden@oklahoma.net and that bounced. Oklahoma.net is up. Isn't that weird? )

I have since tried to call them again and the phone number is now busy.

Is there any way to find out what is going on? Is it a power outage? I'm in North Texas and there were lots of noisy thunderstorms last night. Some power outages in north texas but OKC is over 2 hours away from me.

This is frustrating.

By the way, if anyone gets an update from catalog.com, please do post it to this thread.

Can I ask where you got your info? I've been all over the net looking for info. Since I can't get them on the phone nor have they answered my email...its hard to know what is going on....Thanks for the info....

Yes, please post any info you know about catalog.com...

As for quail Springs. Is that the data center in Plano, Tx? I thought their plano, Texas data center was their newest? Where is Quail Springs DC?

Yup been atleast 12 hours with my server too... getting a little upset with the lack on info.
Normally it takes me like 10 hops to get to my server but i'm bombing out at 5... When it is "just a router" problem it always bombs out with atleast one catalog.com hop. so something bigger looks to be going on...

When I ran a traceroute this morning (about 6 hours ago), it reached oklahoma.net and then failed before getting to my server (but it got close). So at least at that time it was probably just a router... I don't know what it could be now, though.

I managed to get through to their voice mail although the automaticed system sounded different. Options were different than normal. I left voice mail although I doubt that anyone will return my call. You know in the time I've been a customer (since Feb) I've left voice mail a few times...with their recorded message saying they will give me a "prompt call back" and they have never called me on the phone as a result of my voice mail asking for tech support for my dedicated server. Its all been through email.

Secondly, I checked the OKC newspaper online for any information about phone lines, power outages and such and find nothing that indicates that routers or power is the problem. WOuldn't it be newsworthy? http://www.oklahoman.com

it started last night around 11:48pm, according to QWKMON.com (http://www.qwkmon.com)
downtime is now at 13hours+ this week.

and 2 weeks ago when their routers was cracked, the network went down for 16 hours+

Yes, catalog.com is online but their datacenter apparently isn't. Their site is obviously not on one of the servers in their datacenter that is missing in action.

I do find it amazing that catalog.com is online...but my server isn't. They can still do business. I can't. :(

Jedito,

Catalog has 3 data centers.

The quail springs is currently down.

Earlier today we were also able to trace route as far as one hop before our servers.

Now as with many others we can only go about 5 hops toward them...no where near the actual machines...

Just also managed to leave voicemail as well...

With the downtime in excess of 12 hours, this seems to be a highly serious problem. What are peoples ideas on the problem?

Hi guys,

I woke up today morning (Indian time) and found that my server is still down with catalog.com :(

I am terribly upset and i think that this is the worst time in my webhosting business. I never even faced such situation, when one of my host declared their shutdown and we had to transfer 200 sites within 48 hours.

This has been ridiculous. If it continues for another 24 hours, I will be surely out of business. It seems.

As a virtual hosting provider depending upon *expert* data centers, what option do i have to explain my customers about these elongated downtimes which is now a days very often with catalog.com.

Is anybody else still suffering ?

Abhishek

:(

I am loosing clients.
Since yesterday, I have already lost 6 of them. I am loosing financially and also my reputation.

Few customers have even made statements that it seems i have gone out of business. After all there are so many companies which closes down just like that.

talash there network is up and running good now... If you system is still down more than likely when the powered it back up the OS didn't boot right... you sould really contact them by email or better yet use the emergency notify system which is explain here... http://servers.catalog.com/techsupport.htm

Dear Dexter,

Thanx for the info. I have notified them.

BTW, do you run your hosting business based on Catalog ? This was one of my first servers with catalog and i am not sure, how my business will survive with such infrastructure.

I dont think i am compromising on my infrastructure as i am paying good enough to get the server and even have taken up 256 MB RAM, though i didnt even utilise 128 MB !

But due to their network outage, I am loosing clients.

Any suggestion ?

Regards
Abhishek
