View Full Version : Is this the proper way to set up DNS?

Here is what I did:

(1) Set Up Virtual Sites:
*Setup a virtual site ns1.mydomain.com with IP1.
*Setup a virtual site ns2.mydomain.com with IP2.

I used two new IP addresses for the above. www.mydomain.com is the original site on the rack, and it has a different IP address.

(2) DNS:
*A record ns1.mydomain.com to IP1.
*A record ns2.mydomain.com to IP2.
*PTR record IP1 to ns1.mydomain.com.
*PTR record IP2 to ns2.mydomain.com

I did this also.

I also changed primary and secondary name server settings in Control Panel ---> Network ----> General Settings.

I then went to Directnic and used their "Create Nameserver" function for my nameservers. Afterwards, I pointed one of my Directnic domains to the nameservers on my machine.

It has been about two days, but my test site is still unreachable. Did I miss something or should I just be more patient? Anyone see omissions or problems?

I should also mention that I added an "A" and "PTR" record for my test domain, using an IP address which is shared with other virtual sites.

Any ideas or even a "Looks ok to me." is appreciated.
