I have Windows ME, and it wont shut down correctly, when it gets to the It is safe to shut down you computer it turns into a dos prompt in the middle of the screen, and it stays like that.
I thougt I could change the autoexe.bat file and some other one, it does just fine in SAFE mode, but I dont know which programs doesnt load in safe mode but does in regular mode, and if anyone isnt confused so far you should be and if you could help me out..
thanks:eek: :bawling:

Guess they couldn't completely hide DOS. :)
Windows ME really is a piece of work - and I don't mean that positively. It's horribly unstable, the only thing _nice_ about it is that they slapped on the 'cleaner' windows 2000 interface. You really are better off using 98se or if possible 2k. [if you must run windows].
Anyways, have you installed any new software lately? Usually stuff doesn't just happen out of the blue (although it is known to happen). It sounds like something in the system buggers out and it just falls to dos (although you would expect it to lock up). I would trace back to the last thing that happened (if any) when this error first occured.
Also, this is a guess, since this happens right at the "its safe to shut down..." screen its possible that windows is having a problem with APM, like its trying to shut the computer off but it can't. Does this happen when you restart?

that part works fine, I do have windows 2k pro, but it needs another operating system to work off.

What do you mean that it(win2000) needs another operating system to work off.
BUt to give you a quick solution hit it with a hammer and if that doesnt work then the hammer wasnt big enough.
I and webhostingtalk take no responseability for the actions described in this post.

Try to disable AntiVirus program that you may have. Also, remove any Power Management stuff.
Or go to

To access the troubleshooters in Windows Me Help, click Start, click Help, type troubleshooter in the Search box, and then click Go.

I would take sometime and reinstalling the OS after format.
I feel that my harddrive gets messy after 5+ months of use. So I usually format and reinstall everything once in a blue moon.
Boy, I feel very clean after I format/reinstall everything.

i mean the machine crashes every day anyways that thats just like a messy reboot.
Windows has always had problems shutting down!
