Hi I was on a site the other day and pop ups began to pop up asking me to download stuff, I kept hitting no and the "x" button they kept popping out and finaly they stopped and then a window popped up --- looked very real ---- and said norton has detected the virus JS.Startpage on your system. (Yes I do have Norton)
I then hurried up and used Go Back and reverted my drive to an hour before this all happened. I scanned my whole pc twice and it did not find any viruses, I then went to symantec.com and used their online scanning and it to did not detecte anything.

What do you guys think? I am kind of worried because I just spent around 1,ooo dollars just for the tower -- it is an awesome pc---.

Do you think it is a hoax or true?
What do you recommend doing?
Is a Js.Startpage a vey harmful virus or what really does it do

Thanks

Symantec.com says:

JS.StartPage is a Trojan horse program, which alters the default home page of Microsoft Internet Exporer. It sometimes arrives as a file with the .hta extension. This file is an HTML application, and it runs only if the Windows Scripting Host is installed.

If that is the case, do the following:

To remove this Trojan:

1. Run LiveUpdate to make sure that you have the most recent virus definitions.
2. Start Norton AntiVirus (NAV), and run a full system scan, making sure that NAV is set to scan all files.
3. Delete any files detected as JS.StartPage.
4. Start Internet Explorer, and reset the home page to one of your preference.

I dont get it why either -- the people that do it are just plain dumb and have nothing better to do then mess peoples pcs up

Please tell me what you think - do you think it was a hoax or it was true -- do you think that i am safe since i checked it and nothing shows??

I think you're safe because you used GoBack. And you looked and nothing's there.

I have been fighting trojans for months. As soon as I think I've got them all here comes another. I think I've bought every tool known to man by now. Norton always finds them but can never fix. I bought another program called SpywareNuker It does pretty good. Not too expensive either.

why do people do it?

a.) because it is challenge. Why do people climb rocks?

b.) its a potential money make (mostly for hackers), because major companies would want these hacker to secure their computers... remember, you have to think like a criminal in order to avoid one.

c.) who says symantec isnt run by a whole bunch of virus writers -- causeing people to buy their product (?)

I believe the "virus" you received was real. I seem to get them on a weekly virus, and Norton has done a great job of catching them immediately. These really dont hurt the system as a "normal" virus would, but are more of a pain in the ass. Just make sure you keep up to date with your virus definitions, and keep using Norton, Ive found other scanners sometimes dont pick them up.

Agree with you there.. The oddest thing as soon as my six months of definitions was up is when I started having problems. Things that make you go hmmmmmm.

Yeah, the virus is real but once you goto a website with that attached virus, Norton will stop it immediatly and it won't harm your system.
