View Full Version : Anyone offering free email for surfers?

I have a site on my RaQ 4i where I would like to offer free web based email to surfers. Is anyone doing this? Will this require too much CPU usage for a RaQ?

Any scripts that work particularly well?

If I outgrow the server at some point, that is alright as long as everything can be moved somewhere else.

Other things I should consider?

Due to the fargon bastage spammers, I'd think usig http://everyone.net or http://bigmailbox.com might be better?

I'm not sure about ease of moving either. Could be a major pain in the donkey. I've seen some scripts at http://hotscipts.com but I don't know if they are good enough for what you need.

A very cheap ad free service is here:

I think Cobalt Raq is though enough to handle web mail at their own server.
For software email, you can use third party software from www.emumail.com

The example that use Emumail with Cobalt is www.surat.ws a free based email service from Indonesia

Chicken,
I had thought about both of those. They are excellent solutions for sites that don't have the resources (me, maybe), but it is my understanding that they maintain ownership of the user base. That bothers me way more than advertising splits.

Tox, adhytia,

I'll look into those.

Anyone have opinions on
Gossamer-Mail (http://www.gossamer-threads.com/scripts/webmail/index.htm) ? It is about $500 installed, seems to have the features I'm looking for, but I am unsure about resource usage.

Note that the link I gave is a payd service (10 $ for each 1000 mail accounts) where you decide all advertising and if I remember correct you also get everything else including user info.

Netmongol is very reasonably priced. The site said that I would have control over adds and deletes. Do you know if their control panel allows for purging users who haven't visited in a certain period of time? I emailed them, but haven't heard back yet.

Well, I talk with them this morning and I do know that they will be adding many features soon. Currently you can't do that (at least I don't see where) but if you told him to delete any accounts not being used for a period I'm sure he would do it. Only reasonable to do.

netmongol.com is not free, even with advertising on it..!!
I think we must try it first with free adds....then considered to use or not their software.

$10 are not the world.... I'm thinking about signing up and use one of my "unused domains" for the beginning. I'm sure my friends will be happy to get a new address for a month... and then I'll be able to hear their opininons.

anyway... your idea is really not bad... they should really offer something like you said.

I thought the Netmongol price was so low, I should have some reason to be suspicious. (About service quality, etc.) I recently realized that the owner is a frequent and respected contributor on another well known messageboard system. I'm going to give Netmongol a try.

Yes Guava is known as a caring and friendly webmaster. 10 $ for each 1000 users is not very much considering you don't have to think about the hardware, SPAM and you control ALL advertising.

Netmongol looks good... Anyone signed up with them?

Is there any other site using emumail on a Raq other than surat.ws ?

$10 for 1000 email accounts hosted sounds too good to be true. But then again, you never know. :)

If you want a "live" site using it go here:

On my raq3 I have installed squirrelmail which is easy and is only for users on a certain domain.
Furthermore, I have IMP ( horde.org ) which is excellent but not so easy to install. You can also
use pop accounts from other servers but it is a little dangerous because of spammers.
I can give you the URL if you email me privately as IMP is for my customers only, normally.

Greeting Folks!

I've looked into Netmongol a year and half ago. The reason I didn't go with them is because they don't have a way for you to remove user that are inactive for a certain amount of time. They said they planned to add that service very soon. Well, it has been more than a year and I still don't see it. They are a little slow in responding.

A while back they were $10/1000/month. Now, they've increased their rate to $20/1000/month. They also went from 10MB of space for each email account down to 6MB per email account. What else are they going to cut???

It's really too bad we don't have another competitor to work with. I am sure I am still in the search like everyone else.

Wonder why there's not very many post in this forum and freewebspace.net about NetMongol... Hum.

I exchanged mails with them quite a few times about additional features and they sounded very willing to add more.

When I contacted them again about this I didn't get a reply and when I found out people can send more than 20 mails at a time (they advertised that this wasnt' possible with their system) and mailed them about it I didn't get a reply either.

I decided to cancel my account but they didn't repond to that either so I had to contact Revecom in order to stop the monthly billing.

Very dissapointing after Netmongol started so well.
