Hello,

I am planning to build a 2u server and colocate it with a facility.

Here is what I am looking for?
1. Fast connection
2. Uptime Guarantee
3. Cost per bandwidth (cheapest, of course)

What do you think about these companies, and which one do you prefer over the others?

1. Burst.Net
2. HE.net
3. Efreeservers.com

What I think about Burst.net?
- Cheap bandwidth cost
- Not sure about speed and uptime
- Expensive in the long run due to cost per rack

What I think about HE.net
- Fast connection
- Unlimited IP#
- FREE 1u/2u rackspace ( if order 128Kbps plan)
- FREE 12" rackspace (if order 384Kbps plan)
- For a full rack, it is only $400 per month.
- I don't like their high bandwidth cost, but it weight out with rack space, bandwidth is under $2 per gig. Bad thing is that it is based on 95th percentile.
- They are close to my home, 15 minutes away.

What I think about Efreeservers.com
- Their plans are the best, but they are quite NEW.
- Within my state.
- Not sure about their speed and uptime.

If you were me, which one would you choose?
I am building the server right now, and if I can't decide now, then I will flip a coin & one of the three.

Please let me know what you think about these three companies above.

Thank you very much in advance.

I just got a dedicated server from burst.net Thursday. So far, they have been excellent. They helped me install a control panel, and take care of things imediatly. I can reach them most of the time via phone, chat, AIM, or email. I am not to sure about their other services or prices compaired to others.
I have only been with them for less than a week and I am on a dedicated server. I suggest you do a search on this board for both. Good luck

Just my personal point: for colocation I wouldn't go with Efreeservers.com because they are very new at this business. About He.net I don't like the 95th percentile rule so I probably would go with Burst.
But there are plenty of places for colocation, I would shop around for a place which meets 90% of my needs.

I also have a server a burst.net. I have yet to call, AIM or ICQ and received an answer to my question. They just tell me to email sysadmin@burst.net. The reason I went with them was they answered the phone when I called but I didn't know they could only help me with the simple things. Right now my server is down has been for 5 hours now. I tried to call them, AIM, and ICQ no responce.

They did have the server setup in 4 days *trying to calm down*

Well...I don't know about you guys, but if I find a colocation facility close by .. specially few miles away from your house. I would choose that.

Greetings Asia,

I've recently taken a tour of HE.net's Fremont facility, and I must say it's quite nice (and large!). I'm sure you will be more than satisfied there. Their pricing is extremely reasonable, and their connectivity is amazing (~1000 mbps).

We're planning on locating a few servers there within the coming months to test connectivity and performance. I'll keep you informed on how it goes.

Hello Matt,

I wonder if you have checked out Maxim.net.

They have pretty cheap bandwidth.

I've searched them on webhostingtalk.com, and heard some complaints on them regarding slowness.

Since they have a facility in Fremont, have you ever considered them?

If I am sure that they have fast connection and 99.9999% plus uptime, I would consider them rather than HE.net.

If you or anyone knows more information about their speed and uptime, please let me know.

Actually, yes.

We checked into Maxim.net about a year ago. It doesn't seem that much has changed since then. Their bandwidth is definitely affordable, however it is capped rather than burstable.

I have never been to their facilities, so I can not comment on that. You might want to call them up and request a tour.

i just left maxim myself. if you know your bandwidth I think you can save money their if you use allot. Like was said your bandwidth is capped and if you don't put up a deposit I think the fees month to month are increased by 15%

for support it may just be me but I got lost in their email system so many times. Call them up during business hours and things should go ok

I had one problem with my server and it took them a few days to get a tech to fix it and they didn't even charge me and admitted some fault I guess. I was willing to pay to get some simple things done like a fresh install of my os and in the beginning was being told nobody their knew how to do that. so that sucked

also even though its colo you might have issues getting to your machine if you dont' set up an appointment. They like you to come from business hours m-f but you might be able to setup weekend times depending on their staff on hand I guess. If your machine breaks down in the middle of the night friday I don't know if you can simply showup to work on the sucker. their is a security risk im sure for them. you should call and see what their policy is now

network quality I think is atleast average. never had troubles getting to sites. their network has been up literally like the whole time i have been their. a couple attacks and hiccups happened but i remember the network only being completely down for very short bursts in a day here or their. again they have their own lines and stuff so im pretty sure they deal with things pretty well.

This was before they turned into hostcentric also.

the environment I think is really good. I took my server down after a year and thier isnt a spec of dust inside the thing which is cool.

they are in their own building and I have been inside so I think its good your dealing directly with them.

as for what im doing now im just dabbling with no firm business plans or client base and im taking a risk by going with efreeservers but I plan on putting my server online their with my new account in a couple days. I'll just have to see

i can vouch for hurricane electric. like matt, i've toured their fremont facility (impressive -- and big!).

they're what i'd call a "second level" colo shop. their facilities aren't amazing -- but they're very good. prices are also very competitive.

ask for anna shaver. im not sure if she still works there, but she gave us a tour a few years ago and she was very clued. a sales person with a clue. rare indeed :)

good luck.

raj.

Hello,

I believe they've changed from actual use to 95th percentile, I think.

What do you think about this?

If I purchase 128Kbps plan, I get 1u/2u rackspace for free.

If I purchase 384 Kbps plan, I get 12" rackspace for free.

I can get a full rack for $400 per month.

If they charge $200 for 128Kbps ("38GB") and I approx colocation of a 1u/2u server is $200/month, then it looks like I get 128kbps for free.

If they charge $400 for 384Kbps ("115GB") and I approx colocation of a 12" rackspace is $200/month, then it is like $400 - $200 (for rackspace) = $200. $200 for 115GB is approx $1.74 per GB

If they charge $500 for 512Kbps ("153GB") and I approx colocation of a 12" rackspace is $200/month, then it is like $500 - $200 ( for rackspace) = $300. $300 for 153GB is approx. $1.96 per GB.

If they charge $1000 for 2MBps ("600GB") and I approx colocation of a 12" rackspace is $200/month, then it is like $1000 - $200 ( for rackspace) = $800. $800 for 600GB is approx. $1.33 per GB.

Even on a 95th percentile, do you think it is a good deal?

Hi,

That looks like a pretty good deal to me. $1.33 GB is certainly cheap. As always plenty of issues to check out service, uptime, blackouts etc.

I wish our facility was near there so I could quote on the business. :(
