View Full Version : pearl harbor...
if you haven't seen this yet, you better run. this movie was sooooooooooo good. i saw it on imax so it was 10x better but any theater you goto should suffice :)
i'm not saying anymore except that this is probably the best movie i've ever seen.
Chicken 05-26-2001, 02:33 AM I wanna see it I wanna see it!
Brian Farkas 05-26-2001, 03:10 AM I saw it tonight and you're right teck, it was good. Let me tell you though, after I got up, my legs were HURTING! (The movie was 3 hours long)
TheComputerGuy 05-26-2001, 07:54 AM 3 hours, well I am going to see it with a female, I dont care if the movie was good or not....;)
Domenico 05-26-2001, 08:02 AM You are going to a three hour movie with a girl ???
Imagine what other things you could do within those three hours ;-)
A movie like Pearl harbor doesn't work like an aphrodesiac either but then again she might be your sister so...
Have phun anyway!
Domenico
cbaker17 05-26-2001, 10:44 AM I was going to go yesterday, but i read several bad reviews about, guess ill go see it anyways
Annette 05-26-2001, 12:35 PM Several? I have seen tons. I'm not exactly the biggest Ben Affleck fan in the world, either, since I don't think he can do much more than look pretty. Some of the dialogue I've seen in the reviews is going to no doubt make me laugh like a maniac (and annoy some other people in the theater). I am interested in the SFX, although I understand that piece takes about 3-4 times the amount of time that the actual attack took and it's relatively bloodless. Wouldn't want to go into R rating territory, now, would we?
I'm waiting for Tomb Raider, though. Saw previews for it when we saw The Mummy Returns last weekend. Looks pretty cool, in a cheesy sort of way, but that's what summer is for - entertaining movies that give you an excuse to eat popcorn.
thewitt 05-26-2001, 01:46 PM There are certainly some historical inaccuracies in the movie, but it's worth seeing.
Those of you who can appreciate the message and plot of the love story/war movie, and enjoyed anything that John Wayne did in the same vein, will enjoy it.
I cried twice. I don't cry in movies. A close family friend was on the Arizona and survived the attack on Perl Harbor. I interviewed him before he died (close to 20 years ago now) to include his story in his family's genealogy. There was enough realism in the attack scenes that his interview came flooding back to me during the movie.
If you are going to expect perfect historical accuracy you will be disappointed. If you are going to be entertained, by all means ignore the hype on both sides of the aisle and go see the movie.
-t
I saw it last night (friday) and thought it was really good. I think they tried to keep the historical part in it, but its always kinda on the edge there.
Still, I think its a must see!
Jim
TheComputerGuy 05-26-2001, 04:41 PM the only movie I have seen to really accurate is THE GREAT ESCAPE, I did research on it and everything else.
Pearl harbor lasted what about an hour or so.... so that right there is a mis conception, but to the people on the USS Arizonia must have thought it lasted a lifetime.
I think one thing that makes me so mad about WWII is that the fact that the Jewish people in the Holocaust, Not all now, really hate Americans, English, and Austrailians, who gave their life to get the out of the camps and everything else, look at the Death MArch of Buthan, I get very angry.
When ever I get the chance and find someone that was in WWII, I shake their hand if they allow me to, and I look them in the eye and say "Thank you sir, for allowing me to have the chance to have the freedom I have today, wheather or not he actually was in a motorpool or in a the mess hall or a spy, he was in the war. I suggest everyone do that for they will not be around for many more years.:(
Aloha,
yeah it is big news out here for sure
very curious to see it and looking forward to it ;)=
I have had a very rare oportunity to dive on the USS Arizona a few years ago and take some photos

was an honor to dive on her and one I will always remember ;)
also Truk lagoon Chuuk is amazong place to dive
(SH)Saeed 05-26-2001, 08:00 PM I just got home from the movies and they showed commercial for Pearl Harbor. It looks like to be a good movie, but 3 hours is just a little to long to sit in the theather. We just saw the mummy and that is a great movie. It has action, neat effects and comedy, all in one.
:agree: :agree: for the mummy :D
JustinK 05-26-2001, 10:21 PM Gosh, I guess I'll have to see it next weekend. Tomorrow is all taken up and when I went to the theater today, there was an enormous lineup. All the shows for today sold out while in line so I had to see a Knights Tale instead (which was a bit odd, but humerous). I found the fact that the people behind us golf clapping and chanting "Go William" was a bit off though. I think I'm cursed with people following me into theaters planning to vocalize everything that just happened.
Annette 05-27-2001, 01:33 AM Well, we were going to wait to see Pearl Harbor, but wound up seeing it this evening about an hour and a half after seeing Shrek (yes, double feature). Shrek we give a hearty two thumbs up. Pearl Harbor - well, if you have three hours and it is really hot outside and you've already seen/don't want to see the other things playing (Angel Eyes? Please.), then go see it. Interesting (bad) history, and you get to see Ben "Get Me In A God-Damned Plane" Affleck's cool, highlighted, new 'do and his less cool attempts to emote.
(Those who have seen the movie will understand that particular reference; those that haven't, well, that's what he said. A couple of times.)
dektong 05-27-2001, 01:44 AM Finally, I took the time to watch this movie... Well, I am not really that impressed. The plot is not that great. Out of the three hours, personally I think they should scrap half of them. The plot about the love story is really non-essential (also, the plot is too predictable). The story about US striking back at the end is also not essential. Hey, this is about Pearl Harbour, not about US attacking Japan as a revenge. Anyway, since I did not read any reviews about the movie, I was hoping I could see some documentary/historical story/fact (not a great one, still) about Pearl Harbour (that really brought US into WWII), yet half of the movie was about some love story :(.
rating: 3 out of 5
cheers,
xwebdesigner 05-27-2001, 09:16 PM 3 hours theres no point in making a movie that long.
Unless its the next star wars movie!!!!
AH-Tina 05-27-2001, 09:39 PM I hate Hollywood type movies - indie films are so much better. Pearl Harbor...yuck. The only thing that made it tolerable was being able to look at Ben Affleck. :D

Oh, absolutely. FF looks pretty cool, and of course, what geek can resist Tolkien? We saw the trailer for LOTR at The Mummy Returns and the trailer for FF at both TMR and PH. (Gotta love that shorthand!). :)
Another one you might be interested in is Original Sin, which is coming out later this year with Anjelina Jolie and Antonio Banderas.
Saw the trailer for Planet of the Apes at PH as well. Interesting. No loincloths. Looks like some badass monkeys. Also saw the trailer for Rat Race, a hat-tip to It's a Mad, Mad...World.
We also saw the trailer for The Princess Diaries at PH. Typical ugly duckling to swan type of tale, it seems, but it does have Julie Andrews in it, so that will be worth it.
Films on our definite to-see list:
Evolution - just for a hoot
Moulin Rouge - although the trailer gives away almost the entire movie, bleh - I hate when they do that.
Final Fantasy
Tomb Raider
LOTR
Startup.com - a documentary, and we'll be lucky if we get it here at all.
Planet of the Apes
Tardes de Gaudi (Gaudi Afternoon) - another one we probably won't get in theaters down here.
Ones we're skipping:
All that Glitters - it has Mariah Carey in it, with a bunch of other B-list people. I don't know who told these singers that they could act (hint: Jennifer Lopez), but they ought to all stop.
Jurassic Park III - saw the first one, half the second, and the trailer for the third. Enough already.
A/I - I called it "the robot kid who sees dead people everywhere" when we saw the trailer.
Any common-denominator teenage flick - Cheaters, for instance
The Animal - bestiality jokes galore in the trailer, and Rob Schneider just isn't that funny.
AH-Tina 05-27-2001, 10:13 PM I'd have to agree with most everything on your list!
Another one I'm not going to see...ever...is that annoying blow up all the cars and fight with everyone to the tune of Limp Bizkit's "My way or the highway" movie.
Soooo...everyone...what are some of your all-time favorite movies????
--Tina
xwebdesigner 05-27-2001, 10:30 PM star wars..

Another good movie, with Ewan McGregor, is Shallow Grave.

I hate that
OH shoot the bad guy in the leg then turn around

xwebdesigner 05-28-2001, 10:43 AM Hey Honu
if you liked lock stock and two smokin barells you should see snatch. Great movie!
JustinK 05-28-2001, 11:41 AM I'm drooling over FF. July 13th will be the first day I go to a movie on the day it's released. I'm bringing foam balls too so if anyone attempts to talk I won't tell them to stuff it, I can do it for them. :) My all time fav movie(s)... well I have a list of them. My top 4 are the goonies, legend, the fifth element and the princess bride. While not the best movies ever, they're ones I enjoy watching over and over again. I think I'll go hunt down a trailor for JP3 since I was only able to see a poster at the theater for it. Did anyone see the movie poster for that Cats & Dogs movie?
MattF 05-28-2001, 11:42 AM Matt who directed Human Traffic ??

been wanting to see that real bad also can not wait to get it on dvd when it comes out ;)=
same guy who did 2 barrels good and funky twisted
Dogma 05-28-2001, 03:37 PM Great movie on DVD=Matrix
Great movie overall=Matrix
Matrix Rocks!!:D :D
MasterMindz 05-28-2001, 08:29 PM Huh  , all the reviews of Pearl Harbor that I heard implied that the movie wasn't that great. Most of the reviews said that you should walk in 90 minutes after the movie starts if you want to see the good part (things blowing up). Here's the place where I get most of my movie reviews -- www.mrshowbiz.com (http://www.mrshowbiz.com).
Speaking of favorite movies, I would have to say that ALIENS is most definitely my favorite movie followed by Terminator 2.
well I do not like reviews or critics
they have no clue what I like
there are a lot of good flicks out there that critics did not like
Pearl harbour movie is about a love story
just happens to take place durring pearl harbour
so it was not meant to be a all out war movie
acording to the director they had a interview with him with the local news station out here and that is what he was saying
to me most actors are overpayed and spoiled brats
things like the actors strike
they do not need anything else all the lower downs would be hurt
I have met quite a few actors before and got to work with some the ones I have met have been very very cool
I got to be a tech advisor on the movie the firm for the diving scene and got to cerify Gene H to dive
he is a great guy went on vacation with he and his wife for a month (she is a girl form Hawaii) super down to earth and very nice he does not live in hollywood and does not seem to like a lot of it
a few actors I have met are very phony people
sports stars are the worst almost every one I have met are the biggest jerks.
I used to live on Lanai and met em all over there cause I would take em diving.
so as far as stealing from people to download movies
nah I do not think so they have enough money and do not need more but more to the point as others will say it makes ya want to get a copy for real
I know I get a lot of my music DL and if I like it I buy it
makes me more willing to buy stuff
I know I want same with software
I spend a lot on the stuff I also try ;) out a lot if I do not like it I do not get it
although most software is cool enough to give you a non criple version to try so that is cool
I love microsoft for giving out 120 day trials of stuff like SQL it actually allows you to try it out and see if you like it.
also allows you to buy very cheap developer versions you can work with adn develop aps with then when a client needs a situation where you can sell it great
so to me movies do not do this they just demand money from everything
they should learn form the software comapnies and put out versions you can try in DL format see if you like it enough to buy it ;)
this is my thought
so people bitch about microsoft all the time but they do make some great stuff and have pushed things forward maybe some movie comapnaies should look to them for a biz model ;)
my $23.75 of talking story
later

Chad, according to our super secret way of computing the costs of your posts, you come in at $32.75, thus you have a balance due of $5.00 for that last one. Don't worry, Tim owes us $320.67 so your credit is still good.
Re: Pearl Harbor, friends have echoed the negative comments. Love stories aren't always bad, but they said that the love story was cheesey, and thus could have been cut from the movie (leaving things blowing up ala A-Team or CHiPs style).
Aloha, Chicken
hehehehehehahahahaha
thats good ;)=
yeah I bet it is a cheesey love story
when he was here (the producer) it just shows that they are scum looking for money
it was very funny how he tried to twist words around
he was talking about the love story of his movie as the focus and the fact it took place in pearl harbour was not the movie he was making a love story movie.
(my thoughts well why were you making a love story around memorial day release about pearl harbour a very strong tragedy and so many of your comercials are showing stuff getting blown up etc... and you named it PEARL HARBOR why then ???? end of thoughts)
then he went on to say that he would love to come back and do a movie about the real pearl harbour and the Hawiian people and how it effected there lives but he doubt he ever would as filming a movie in Hawaii is way to expensive and they would not make enough money so they will most likely not ever film a movie like that ???
(my thoughts what you just got done filming a movie here
OH i get it if it does not benefit you and your actors it is not worth it do not really film about the tragedy people faced or anything you superficial pig if you watched any of the shows that were on this week about the real Pearl Harbour you could have created a great movie about it but you wanted to pat yourself on the back and ride the coat tails of a event that would tug at heartstrings PEARL HARBOR end of my rant)
he then made a couple other stupid comments
this was on the local news I bet when his public BS person sees this he will be saying a new story and how it effected him so much and blah blah and lie to his public viewing audience.
basically he said it costs to much to tell the real truth but if it can make me money and benefit me I will tell it
anyway
I am still curious about the movie but sure the love story part will suck ;)=
but I have a good way of looking at movies as they are just movies if it sucks OH well
but man it steams me when people use tragedy to get ahead in life
funn when I was with Gene H he was doing a comercial voice over for the park services to help promote the USS Arizona and refused to take anymoney
there is a cool person who can do something and he does
there are some actors who do well in my book and some who do not ;)
anyway
Later ;)
Kaith Sutai-Rustaz 05-29-2001, 04:12 PM I thought Tims was about $30k :D I must owe a few k too. :)
Hmm...movies...Lets see:
Arcadia of My Youth (get the SUB as the Dub sucks!)
Princess Mononoke (DVD version)
Gladiator (DVD ver)
Matrix
Gettysburg (DVD ver)
Any of those can be on infinate loop on my player...I'd be happy! :)
Mummy and Mummy II (love the effects)
Hanibal wasn't bad either.
haven't seen Pearl Harbor yet, but will shortly. Loved the combat footage in Enemy at the Gates (title?).
Lets see, bottom 5 movies...
-Phantom Menace (Ie-Lucus is off his meds again)
-Anything Pokemon
-anything with wookie goldberg.
-My Youth in Arcadia (DUB)
-anything with Pauly Shore.
...so they threw lots of money at ILM to do their cgi thing and then wrapped that 40 minutes in a mind numbingly bad 2 hours of poorly written and acted love story. Am I the only one annoyed by afflecks really poor fake accent? *ewwww*
SI-Chris 06-01-2001, 03:31 AM Yes... Just saw Perl Harbor. It's a formula movie. The formula is:
(Titanic + Top Gun) / 2 = Perl Harbor
It's not an entirely bad movie, *if* you can overlook the drippy melodrama and corny dialog (plus the historical-accuracy problems, if that matters to you).
If you're an aviation or a history buff and can sit through a 3 hour movie, it's worth seeing.
Whether or not this film wins an Oscar will depend on how many of the extras that Disney hired are Academy members.
determinist 06-02-2001, 05:59 PM It's a very predictable movie for the entire 3 hours (surely this is why makes it dull), but i'm sure it worth your bucks.. a production that were hard to come by these days..
arrgghh.. my local cinema make me watches 20 minutes of ads/trailers/bull*** before the movies actually starts.. i've seen at least half a dozen of movie trailers, shampoo ads, handphones ads, watches ads, tourism ads adding up to more then a dozen! It's like a one full blow of twenty popup banners before you actually visit the website! annoying
JustinK 06-03-2001, 01:46 PM I like watching those movie questions before the film starts rolling. I just saw pearl harbor last night, and even with the predictability and melodrama, I liked it. I think I liked it more because all the reviews really prepared me for what it was going to be instead of the historical side the hype talked about. Next on the list is Shrek (which I'm seeing no matter what because it has a dragon in it).
