I am looking for a host to put my site on and know very little about it. I am picking up the terms quickly but was unsure about something. Do most of the companies have a way for you to upload your files right from your home computer? Or do I need to get some sort of FTP Program? I have only ever used AOL online and so I only know how to use their FTP area. Any help on this subject would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Rickster. IF you can upload files to AOL, you can do the same with a hosting provider via an FTP client. There are many free versions available.

I'd suggest being your new at this, try and find a hosting provider that has an active forum where members will be able to help you along with your site and issues that come with it.

I know many have been happy with Myacen.com which has some nice plans and a forum with helpful clients. Give them a look. Also check the forums for feedback and info on them and a couple other quality hosts.

check out freewebspace.net and their forums. If you are new to the website scene i recommend using a free host first :)

Are you speaking for every hosting provider in the industry?

Most Hosters will provide both ways. A Control Panel which will be similar to what you used with AOL and/or using your own FTP program.

Free Hosters may provide some sort of online FTP option and may be a good way to start. The bad news is, they are going to charge you, if you want to use your own Domain name so you might as well get paid Hosting to start with -- presuming of course, you want to use a Domain name, otherwise, go with the Free Hosting. ;)

All hosts will give you the ability to upload from FTP. If that's something you struggle with, you may want to contact their support and ask if someone can explain it for you. Lastly, if you are still struggling with it, most of the control panels come with a file manager that allow you to upload/download/delete and such.

Simply look for a host with a website control panel. While at their site, look and see if they also provide some sort of FTP tutorial. That way, you can use their control panel until you figure out how to use FTP or if you even want to or not.
I know some people that never use FTP.

You can use the basic two methods, which both allow you to upload your files from your own PC.

1. FTP Clients, such as WS FTP, CUTE FTP, etc...

2. Control Panel provided by the host, you may login to the control panel and upload the file to the server. In CPANEL, it is found in File manager.

Hope this will help.:D

Hello, The Rickster,

If you don't know how to use FTP, our control panel "file manager" can help you, you just simply go to our website, and click the control panel demo, you will find the cool file manager.

If you want to download some cool FTP, for example: cuteFTP, please go to download.com , don't search cuteFTP, just search Kazaa or Limeware, when you have such "wares", then you can download cuteftp or whatever ftp you want without license.

Warning: it is illegal to download the full version software without license! :o

SmartFTP is free. No need to use wares when there are free software that works just fine.
