Aloha,
well wanted to play with one of these so I decide to go ahead and get one from rackshack
will keep ya posted
so far sign up was a bit funky as I was using IE6 the forms errored out so swung over on other puter and no probs went right in
so do not use ie6 they are looking in to it
also had probs with ie6 on Dotster today
hmmmmm more ie than anyting I bet.

well asked for a few extra IP oneto run my admin off
one for my virts and I have 2 accounts that need a static
so this will be a play toy for now :0

going to try some ASP stuff that is the main reason I got it
figured I want to learn more on DNS so I have a dozen or so domain names to play with adn wanted to try out chilisoft and MySQL on it that is the main thing
agian will post my findings later when I do more on it.

at $99 that is like a nice dinner at Roys or something so figure no prob maybe sell of a few accoutns to help pay for it but who knows
I think I am still going to get a win2k for serious asp dev stuff adn maybe run CF on it also
we shall see
anyways I am out of here going diving at Molo tomorow and hte next day filling in for a guy who got sick so should be fun

IE6 still lives in BetaVille, so I wouldn't recommend using it for anything important (or anything at all for that matter, unless you work for PC Magazine).

The thing that would stop me from getting a RaQ4 at RackShack to use as a "toy" is their $250 setup fee. That's pretty steep--but hey, they have to make their money somehow (they're not making by renting servers with 150 gigs/month traffic for $99).

Honu, before you get too deep in with ASP you should do yourself a favor and check out PHP (get the $20 Teach Yourself PHP4 in 24 Hours from Amazon.com). If you've had any experience with Perl, you'll find PHP incredibly easy to get into (and even if you haven't, I doubt you would have a problem).

Aloha,
yeah
I know but I like the way asp goes with ultradev I can build stuff very fast with it compared to PHP
so that is why I am chosing it
so Ihave a guy who is amazing at PHP on the PHP board or something
figure something huge comes down the line I can go out to him
also have a CF programmer on call
I like CF its pretty cool
would rather leanr more withthat
spent a year working with CF as a front end person so chances are I would use one of those first
just becuase I have used the others a lot and would not be so far behind.

boy the last language that was a real language I used was fortran or cobal back in teh early 80's
scary huh

OH yeah
it was a bit of a set up
but I have some static sites and stuff I am going to host and building a big app/ site up so if it goes well I will keep it on hte RaQ
it will be a mostly PHP project for the aviation industry
so once I get it up will let everyone know
it will be using some stock stuff adn some custom

I've recently started using Coldfusion with CF Studio. For simple apps, CF has a great development enviroment that is easy to set up. However, ASP and JSP are much more flexible, but if you know PERL and HTML, then CFML is a snap.

There is a review of the different application server languages in an issue of PC Review (I think). I will check the title and then post it here. It was a good issue as it reviews JSP, ASP, CFML, PHP, PERL, and a some others. It also has reviews on web server appliances from Dell, IBM, and Cobalt. I found it to have some good basic info.

Glad you got a RAQ, even thought I put some funnies your way! On your admin account, enable PHP and setup a dir for myPHPAdmin to admin all your mySQL stuff, it is the best thing you can do :)...

Also e-mail me your address, I've something else you will be interested in - Matthew@DPS.uk.com

Aloha so far so good
no problems asked for my extra 3 dns I will need at this time
and next morning I had em seemed no prob
when the guy called to verify the accoutn he seemed very cool
and performance is fine for waht I am doing with it at this time
def still looking for a win2k box to do some more serious asp stuff
I think we shall how this chilisoft does
I am going to be busy till at least wed so will not have to much time to play with it
will let ya know how it goes

but again for $99 I am not expecting much
figure if I add memory later it will be a30 adn monitoring will be 160 that is still not that bad will monitor it thorugh qwkmon for now
so at $99 I am goin gto have fun ;)
and host some of my low bandwith static clients on it adn use it for dev stuff and running one site that will be a bit more and if it works was thinking of something like this for a dedicatred mail server as NT does not really have anything
so might me a idea to do it that way
trying to find something like majordomo or ?? to run a listserv kind of thing off
or will see if there is a PHP mysql thing for sign up
who knows yet ;)

ahhhh toys
