Hi,
I was wondering if someone can tell me something about Can-Host. http://www.can-host.com/.
Their plans look good and the control panel they give web<<cp seems to be cool.
Any feedback will be greatly appriciated.

i think we all agree we see the dreaded word mentioned MORE than once!!
UNLIMITED... argh!
Note: I have datafiles here designed in AutoCad, some of them are about 5GB each in size, you think i could upload two of those per month? this guy would need more hard disk space than NASA before long !

"Each Unlimited account is given 300 mb of space on activation. However, your web site may occupy as much space as you wish. Extra HD space can be requested freely in the members -- add-ons section."
So it's not exactly *unlimited* and although they do say you can request extra space, I have a feeling your 5GB autocad files will be deemed unacceptable somewhere in their terms and conditions. :)
At least they're upfront with their bandwidth limits anyway. :D

I personally do not have any experience with their services, but Félix C. Courtemanche hangs around here. I believe he is an admin there. He is usually very helpful and seems like a nice guy.

To settle this whole unlimited thing it works something like this (general overview on unlimited) This is why there is no such thing as unlimited bandwidth
You order a server "unlimited". You start using 100 GB a month.. Most host will find a reason to kick you, why? because you will need a dedicated machine to pull that bandwidth, which means your $3 a month won't cover that. And no hosts wants to buy somebody a $2,700 server just so they can keep "unlimited" bandwidth to you, would you?
So say they don't care and they just decided to give you a $2,700 server, pretty soon you are using 1000 GB a month. Now it's going to cost them $15,000 a month because there on-net-ramp provider is getting bogged down by your server. Let's pretend they still ate the $15,000 a month and didn't complain one bit.
Soon, the mother of the all UUNet starts telling the on-net-ramp provider they owe an extra $100,000 a month, and pretty soon your $3 a month gets stretched pretty damn thin.. Don't you think? No host can offer unlimited bandwidth why? Because they depend on level3, uunet, qwest, and others. And do you know what the big players will do ? The will turn off your access providers internet connection, forcing them to turn off your site or go out of business...
When companies offer unlimited bandwidth, they are betting on the fact that you really wouldn't use that much. But keep in mind NO host, NO host can offer unlimited bandwidth!
And that's all for today kids :-)

Hello,
I would like to clarify our use of the Unlimited word here.
We do not offer unlimited bandwidth or transfer, which would be a total fake.
Of COURSE there is no such thing as an unlimited hard drive, but considering that you can use up to a certain amount of transfer per month and we do not allow you to use our services as backup storage only, we feel that any site requiring from 0 to 10 GB can be on our servers.
We are removing the Unlimited word and replacing with 2500 MB when our next plans & designs are released, calming anyone here.
I also would like to point out that we define & describe the use of our unlimited term right under the plans description.
I must admit that if someone manage to upload 20 GB of data and stay under his acceptable transfer limit (transferring 60gb/month on a shared server is not very logical after all), using the HD space appropriately, I will be very surprised... but I will keep his site on our servers.
E-Mail me if you have any question!

Hey,
The discussion has gone somewhere else ;) as usual.
I wanted to know about their dedicated server offering. I saw that they have a great control panel in making and was interested in their plan for dedicated server, etc.
Can anybody give me their first hand experience about hosting a dedicated server with them ?
Regards
Abhishek

I have been with can-host.com for quite awhile.
Felix is extreamly nice when you need help. Not only nice but also lighting fast!
The only thing that can ruin a big site from being hosted on can host would be the speed. It can be either too fast or a bit slow at times.
