Aloha,
OK did a lot of searches on the board and did not find what I am looking for ?? :(

so
I am thinking of getting a win2k box (dell app server)(I am going to do some asp stuff)
and want to know what kind of email programs you people have used for POP accounts ? I would like to have a email interface so my users can check when they are away form home and have good control

any thoughts ???

now my other thought is to set up a RaQ box with good email programs that are open source and free and use that as my email server ???

any thoughts ???

the other thing is I want to have a good list program that will allow opt in and out etc...???

mahalos for the help

yeah I remember that from the other post ;)
forgot one other guy was helping me out and he had a RaQ

seems to me that I should skip Raq all toghether and get a dell
mainly real PIII chip scsi drives raid etc...
can you add whatever programs you want to your dell box
(I have called dell 2 times and they stillhave not answered back they keep saying we will have someone call you who cna answer your questions)
I guess treat it pretty much like a normal unix box ?
and does it set up pop accounts when you create a user or is that seperate (sorry if this is a dumb newbie question)

I am pretty good at figuring stuff out and learn quick
but some stuff like this is all new to me
I am on Hostpro right now and want to control my own destiny adn not have some virtual account stopped due to scripts I use or bandwith issues
so that is where I am coming from
agian thanks so much for the help
ya get to Maui
I treat ya to a MaiTai ;)=

so have ya found your dell app server to be pretty good
pros cons ???

Let me tell you one thing about Dell, techical support is the worst ever, it is pretty much non-existant. So don't count on that.

You can customer configure whatever you want. Prefered preinstalled redhat 7 and then just format with whatever version of redhat you need probably a nice 6.5 or something for cpanel

Dell needs to get there stuff in gear even there order check online won't give you the tracking number it just says the package "in-route" but if you call and go through a 30 tier menu that repeats itself nearly six times you can get your tracking number... the system is horrible, but the hardware is working pretty good so far i'm happy

Aloha,
cool
yeah I have heard Dell is starting to lack at suport

how about security issues >
because of the web admin interface
do you think it is as secure as any other box or is it the same as any box as far as putting in patches etc... or do you have to go through the dell download thing in the interface ??
this is one thing I am going to have to learn ;) more about

not to keep bugin ya but what about the mail on the box is sendmail included I take it ?
what about the pop stuff ??
again big mahalos

what web admin interface? You mean the custom software dell ships with its version of redhat? You won't even have that install you will wipe the harddrive when you reinstall anyway. One cool feature of dell servers is you can remotely login to the bios (only if you enable this feature) which would allow you to make net changes...

hmmm so you wiped it clean and started over then ????

I want something super easy to set up clients on and stuff if ya wiped it how com ya did not get a straight dell server ???

thanks again
man this is a education but one I must have ;)

you just use straight conf file etc... configuration then
the real techie way ;)

I am not quite comfortable yet with that level want to be soon ;)

so learning as I go I have a drive set up here to play with stuff to learn on
but need something easy for now
if ya wiped it why
what was wrong ?
or was it just you can handle it alone ?

if you had words of wisdom for me about the pitfalls of the panel they have installled what would that be ??

Well are you going to be hosting with somebody that offers cpanel? because you will have to wipe it then. If i were you i would talk to the place you plan to host and see if they for a fee would wipe it and install the box for you :-)

Not sure about the hosting end yet.
one of the things I liked was that it seemed easy to add people etc...

ya think Cpanel is better
no one but me will adminstrate the box the most access clients will have is to ad users
it will not be as a reseller persay more for my clients
I am mangaging about 20 domains right now and growing on clients

I have a account with Weinbar that I can play with cpanel on
also like the look of plesk and ensim
another thread has pros cons to both

did you find the stccok admin panel they have to weak or it did not fit what you were doing ?
again thanks

The admin panel that comes with dell linux isn't the type of panel you are thinking it more like a tool to create a website, it's like they just copied a bunch of stuff from hotscripts.com

If you really wanna do this i recommend site5.com, if you want we could work out something where you could ship it here first to sharpweb and i could install it for you for a cheep rate and then send it to site5...

yeah I have played with the demo
but it seems like it is not that bad basically I just want to create a site and get the dns set up easy to poing to that new site
I will need static IP for most of em as I want to test them out and some need it for secure cert

as far as colo goes not sure what I am doing yet
site5 is not bad a lot of my people will be on Maui althought the majority will be coming from the mainland to see the site
also looking at weinbar I get very good time from him and datapipe also
pwebtech (Jay has been super cool and I have been talking with him also)
efreeservers also gets ripping times to me

but again
it is hard to say cause I might still go with a win2k because of the asp stuff
and get a unix box for mail and other stuff
again getting an education in this area hope to make my mind up here byu next month and start to move on something.

since as I said none of my clients will be accessing more than adding users I will do the rest
they would just screw stuff up

do you think cpanel is still the best or ??

I am learnign about DNS issues also
does cpanel have a way of setting that up to get the hosts rolling ?
this is one of my main issues is getting the bindings correct and all
adn seems the dell app is easy to do
I have not seen that side of cpanel if it exists (will have to go to there site and look into it)
the down side is cpanel is like $150 a month (correct)

so you are using cpanel then

Yeah I've used it for a long time. It works very well.

Yeah that's the problem with winnt/2k..it takes a lot of software that costs a lot

Aloha,
can I ask ya what kind of set up ya have and what ya think of it
also on unix when ya create a user you can only have one per server so making emails you have to do alias files
I know there must be a way around this not sure how yet but there is maybe making a bunch of partitions ??
anyway how does a win machine handle virtual hosting and having users with hte same name on the machine
does it have the probs that unix has ???

I was thinking of a dell appserver as it looks like setting up virtuals is pretty easy
I am only hosting my own clients so I am not reselling but looking to run asp stuff and be able to have virtual host accounts set up on one machine and have seperate virtual domains and want to be able to have users for each one without having to make up aliases etc...
hope this makes sense ?
agian any other things you find with windows ya think are a must have ??
again Mahalos for da time ;)
