Hello,

I've been looking into dedicated server plans, and after seeing the basic cost of a low-end server, I was ready to buy (400/mo for a W2k plan from Verio). However, it then became clear that this was not the only cost. The firewall security plan was going to be a minimum of 500/mo.

What is a reasonable price to pay for firewall security? Is there a cheaper software alternative to the expensive hardware that is offered?

What other services should I get along with a dedicated server, and how much should I expect to pay?

thanks.

Hi,

Most tier 1 (NOC owners) hosts should provide security for their network (which your server will be on) as standard operating procedure. When you purchase a dedicated server you should also have root access and be able to take care of your own security by installing what you like and taking care of port issues. I suggest reading slashdot.org for info if you are using any kind of linux flavor and want help with security issues.

From the sounds of it that solution from Verio might be geared towards more of a managed solution for someone who does not really want to deal with the technical issues on their server.

Drop me a ICQ if you need more info.

Best Regards,
