View Full Version : Namecheap dependable service? HAH !!
Nottageek 02-15-2003, 02:13 AM Because of positive feedback on this forum, I submitted a domain for transfer from DomainDiscover.com to NameCheap.com on 2/10/03. Unknown to me, DomainDiscover.com had a lock on my domain.
On 2/11/03 I got it released and personally forwarded a copy of the release to NameCheap.com via their "support desk" AND also via email. It is now 3 days later and still no transfer. Is there ANY registrar on the web with ANY integrity and good business practices?
VoxKeysGtr 02-15-2003, 02:32 AM If it has been unlocked simply have them send the transfer request again. It's no big deal. It has happened to me before with enom, which Namecheap resells for. Don't panic. Namecheap and enom are reputable companies, and they are very good at what they do. I have transferred several domain names to and from namecheap, and they have done well for me. Good luck! :)
Nottageek 02-15-2003, 02:42 AM Thanks for the quick reply, but I've already sent them 2 requests to re-send the transfer.
nameslave 02-15-2003, 06:06 AM Hey, it's a Valentine's Day Weekend! ;) I left my office early THURSDAY afternoon. :D
Don't blame namecheap. About 30-40% of the transfers need to be resubmitted... At least this is my own experience...
Nottageek 02-15-2003, 10:00 AM Point is - I've sent 3 requests for help to NameCheap, and they are apparently sitting on their hands. Valentine's Day is NOT a legal holiday, it's a media event, and there is no valid excuse for this transfer to take more than 2 - 3 days max if the registrars are doing their job.
ubergeek22 02-15-2003, 11:54 AM I had a problem with a transfer into namecheap (from domainregistrar), and they responded within 12 hours or so and resolved the problem immediately. No complaints here.
I have had no problems with NameCheap as of yet.
Nottageek 02-15-2003, 05:56 PM  Gee it's great that ya'll are such great boosters of NameCheap, but so far they haven't done squat to help me.
Xemion 02-15-2003, 06:04 PM Did you try resubmiting the transfer? You don't actually need to contact NameCheap to resubmit the transfer...it's all automated.
Nottageek 02-15-2003, 06:30 PM Re-submit the transfer so they can bill my CC again???
DUH, naturally I assumed it was their job to re-send it through. I've contacted their "support desk" via email and the NameCheap website FOUR TIMES... isn't that more than doing my part??
Geeeeeezzz
Xemion 02-15-2003, 06:36 PM no no....login to your account and click on the "Transfer Status" link on the first page and then click the "Resubmit" button. Your credit card is not charged again.
Nottageek 02-15-2003, 07:58 PM Thanks for the tip, although I've logged in there before and never saw any such "resubmit" button and still can't find one. What it said earlier today was... "2/13/2003 Domain transfer initiated and awaiting approval"
Right now it says... "2/15/2003 Domain transfer initiated and awaiting approval"
I am NOT impressed with this company. On a scale of 1 - 10 their support is maybe a 2 or 3, and I can't think of a single valid reason for transferring the rest of my domains to them. I cannot imagine why so many people recommend namecheap unless they are employees. Re: my initial question - Is there ANY registrar on the web with ANY integrity and good business practices? Please, show me the way.
enetwork 02-15-2003, 08:32 PM Notageek, we responded to your first support request within 1 hour and your second within a 24 hr period. I apologize as we do not yet have real time support BUT soon we will have live 24/7 chat support :-)
Best,
Richard Kirkendall
enetwork 02-15-2003, 08:42 PM BTW "2/15/2003 Domain transfer initiated and awaiting approval"
Means that the transfer is in progress therefore we cannot resubmit your request as it is still pending. Right now we are just waiting for the current registrar to release the domain.
Nottageek 02-15-2003, 08:52 PM
>>>we responded to your first support request within 1 hour and your second within a 24 hr period.
Your "response" consisted of an email acknowledging that you had received the tranfer request and that it was "initiated and awaiting approval" and it has been "initiated and awaiting approval" since 2/11/03..!!!! You claim to be waiting on domaindiscover, they claim you never sent them a second request for transfer. NOW you say you have "submitted it FOR me".... EXCUSE ME, isn't that your JOB ??
enetwork 02-15-2003, 08:58 PM Yes it is our job. We simply stated that we had resubmitted the request for you.
enetwork 02-15-2003, 09:06 PM "Hello,
We went ahead and resubmitted your transfer request for you.
Best,
NameCheap.com"
Nottageek 02-16-2003, 09:58 AM Domain TRANSFER CANCELLED for no reason after sitting on it for a whole week!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, this forum does NOT recommend NameCheap.com. Yes, they are a very visible advertiser here on the Domain Names Forum, but that does not necessarily translate into anything. For instance, I as a regular have never recommended them, even though Xemion (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/member.php?s=&action=getinfo&userid=4384) (the web designer and back-end programmer for NameCheap.com) is a nice guy to chat with.
Xemion 02-16-2003, 02:58 PM EX-web designer and back-end programmer. I am no longer an employee of NameCheap and no longer speak for them (though I did develop most of their current domain management system). I have moved up in the world :-) I've taken a position as the CEO of 260.com.
I do continue to strongly recommend NameCheap as my personal experience with practically every domain registrar says that they are among the best if not the best.
nameslave 02-16-2003, 03:06 PM Oh ... congratulations, Xemion! Good for you. :)
Keevo 02-16-2003, 07:41 PM I always tel people in my service agreement if its a national holiday, I have it off too!
Nottageek 02-16-2003, 09:51 PM >>I do continue to strongly recommend NameCheap as my personal experience with practically every domain registrar says that they are among the best if not the best.
That is a pathetic comment. If the (lack of) service they gave me is your idea of "the best" the internet is in a shoddy state of affairs. Thanks for identifying yourself as 260.com.... I'll be sure to tell folks to stay away from there too.
enetwork 02-16-2003, 11:23 PM Notageek,
We answered all your requests to us within 24 hrs and issued a refund for your failed transfer request. One of those two original requests was answered within an hour and the emails back to us today within minutes. We apologize for not being able to meet your standards and thank you very much for giving us a chance to begin with.
Best,

Keep in mind that his experience might be different from yours. If a person's experience goes smoothly, then he/she would not have anything to complain about.
Obviously, for whatever reason, you experience was not smooth. That doesn't mean that everybody else's experience was just like yours. I, for example, never had any problems transferring domains. I even transferred them away from Netsol, and it wasn't a problem. Some people had terrible experiences transferring domain out of there. Every situation is different and to generalize your situation and apply it to everybody else's is inaccurate and foolish.
Namecheap seems to have given you your money back, so relax take a deep breath and try somebody else. Good luck to you. :)
Nottageek 02-17-2003, 01:57 AM >>to generalize your situation and apply it to everybody else's is inaccurate and foolish.
Point is, namecheap dropped the ball and sat on it for 4 days. That IS accurate. It apears too many registrars are following the lead of banks, mortgage lenders, insurance companies, utilities, Enron and the like with delays, deceptive practices, and fee gouging. Such activities used to be called extortion, but that's another thread......... Domain Expired? Pay $80 - $200 To Renew! (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=112422)

Apples and Oranges - the other post is about personal responsibility and some of the consequences resulting from the lack of it.
My point is that you were blaming other people for recommending NC when they had not had the same type of experience that you had. It's not their fault that they had a good experience with NC and you didn't. :)
ddent 02-17-2003, 04:13 AM For what it is worth, when it says that it is initiated and awaiting approval, NameCheap has done as much as they can - the registrar they are getting it from can sit for as long as 6 days 4 hours before the transfer will go through without their approval. Many registrars have a policy of simply ignoring requests to transfer away.
verix 02-17-2003, 04:21 AM I also had a less than stellar experience transferring my domain to Namecheap (you can search for the thread). It took about a week and a few transfer attempts. It was a mess, e-mail from support were delayed or never sent or received. Messages to support@namecheap.com seemed to go to /dev/null. I didn't receive the first two confirmation messages from Enom. But Richard was very helpful and eventually the transfer went through.
I'm not sure I would still recommend Namecheap for transfers. After the transfers are completed, however, it's smooth sailing.

That is NOT accurate. NameCheap has NO control over the transfer process. Neither does any other registrar. All a registrar can do is submit the transfer and wait. If they have to cancel the process and resubmit, that only messes things up further and causes more waiting. There is NOTHING they can do to speed it up.
NameCheap replied to all your support requests within 24 hours, most of the time a lot sooner than that and even refunded your payment. What are you complaining about???
If you talk to people who are highly experienced in the domain industry, they will tell you that that is excellent support on NameCheap's part. They will also tell you that transfers are extremely finicky and you just have to be patient. As quick search of this forums threads will verify all the problems users have with transfers.
Listen to the comments on others around you and not just myself. ddent, VoxKeysGtr, windsor, Keevo and others. Take a deep breath and just relax.
nameslave 02-17-2003, 09:33 AM To be fair, the losing registrar is USUALLY the one who holds the ball while the winning registrar just sits there and waits. You can't really complain when say NameCheap.com simply follows standard procedures. It has become more and more difficult to get some PERSONAL service these days when you are just one of their million customers.
Recently, NameBargain.com ALMOST screwed up a couple of transfers of mine AWAY from them by NOT sending any verification e-mail for me to acknowledge. It's only when GoDaddy.com stepped in and made some extra registrar-level communication effort that things finally got sorted out smoothly.
Nottageek 02-19-2003, 01:07 PM Thanks Ddent -- "the registrar they are getting it from can sit for as long as 6 days 4 hours before the transfer will go through without their approval. Many registrars have a policy of simply ignoring requests to transfer away."
Thanks Nameslave -- "the losing registrar is USUALLY the one who holds the ball while the winning registrar just sits there and waits."
Ya'll were a little slow getting around to explaining that, and I've never ever had so much trouble transferring before. Maybe should start 6 months ahead of time on my others, but if GoDaddy could "step in" and make "some extra registrar-level communication effort" so can anyone else if they value their customers.
My money is good and so is my word, and that's all I'm looking for with a registrar or a host. Have not received good faith treatment from current one after several years with them, and that is why I will be transferring away.
code_renegade 02-20-2003, 06:18 AM Initially when I moved over to Namecheap my previous registar locked my domains, so Namecheap requested me to get them unlocked so they can be moved over.
My previous registar responded only after 3 days, and when I resumbitted it to Namecheap I got all 6 domains moved over within 12 hours. Didn't have anymore problems with the transfer.
If you'd look past the hassles of a transferring process (which I'm sure most of you guys would go through if your previous registar had not bothered to unlock your domains), Namecheap is the place to go. I always get a timely email response from them whenever I've a query or need some help ;)
