I would suggest that you help or join someones hosting company to see if you like that field of work.

Work for an existing company in that field so you could learn the ropes along the way. Real life experience through on-the-job training is indeed the best way of going about it.

In the future, if you decide to start it is best to concentrate on your core competency, ie concentrate on what you do best.

yeah, Id suggest pretty much the same. its MUCH better (read: less risk) if you start off working for/with someone else 1st, and learn as much about the business side of things as you possibly can. As long as your designin/technical skills are there, then once you have a solid understanding of the business, you can start planning.

(by solid I mean understand everything from start to end, how they get the customers to maintaining/servicing/retaining customers). Once you have that, sit down with a pen and paper, do a SWOT analysis, brainstorm with youyr family/friends, SWOT again, brainstorm again, so on so forth.. until you come up with a good execution plan.

as it is, I'm assuming that you have no grounding of any sort in running a business, so I'd not recommend you diving in just yet....

be sure of your strength, and work on your weaknesses. try to offer something unique, or at the very least appealing. do LOTS of role playing, know who your IDEAL customers are, and why they'd want to pay for your services, and not someone else's. A lot of people will tell you to 'brand' you business by providing better service etc, and good branding will potray favourable upon your biz...

to a certain extent that is true, but always understand that a good branding (and/or a good business operation) is not one that customer will see as the best solution out of a bunch, but rather one that customer will see as the ONLY solution. period.
