Hello, i have just got my first dedicated server and rather then play about with it and risk screwing thing up, i woud like to setup one locally. My has WHM and cpanel 3 installed, i know i cannot have these installed locally due to licence issues but i would still get used to command line stuff and installing scripts etc.

Is it possible to get a install disk for redhat 6.2 that has all required software to replicate server setup, mandrake has the option to create this type of disk when you are installing a system.

Alternativly can some give me list of everthing i will need to install, lib's etc.

The server will be local but connet to web via cablemodem and smoothwall.org

cheers

If you are an inexperienced user i would suggest you use the Red Hat RPM's to install features on the remote server, these installs rarely cause problems.

I do not know of a "configuration disk" myself but there may be one available.
If you work closely with your host on upgrades/instalations and ensure with them that the upgrades will be possible then you should not experience problems, this is why we recommend hosts on this board because they can support their users through think and thin.

Thanks for reply, yes good support from host company is important but i will reselling a few hosting accounts and really need to know/learn some basics. A local server would enable me to to this with the risk of bring down my online server.

yes I suppose you have a good point there, most things cannot be done on local machines unfortunately, as this is why people get dedicated servers, things like mail servers, etc...
If you really must play then go out, buy a cheap box and a copy of RH Linux, install it and some of the things can then be tested, unless you have a large internet pipe then you can download red hat from the internet.

Testing is also possible by using redhats online help forums and also at WHT, both great resources for help.

There are lots of people willing to help you before you touch any hardware at all.

Good Luck :)

Hello, i don't think you get want i am after, i do NOT want the local server to be accessable from the web or used by others, i do have many linux distros and a p166 box ready to load them up.

I just want to replicate my online dedicated server to a local box so i can become familier with the system without the risk of bringing down my online box.

What i don't know is the exact configuration and loaded software that is needed to replicate online server locally.

If you have WHM and cpanel, there's not much you can do to mess things up.

If you want a 'server' with redhat, just boot up with the redhat iso and select the type of installation you want.. which would be SERVER.

After that you'll have to load up other modules manually. There was a script i saw awhile back on hot-scripts that automatically installs redhat, apache, mysq
