Just a head up to hosts, we got slammed with about 15 fraudulent cards gained from AOL members with the infamous "Update your cc info" email. Just be on the lookout, I know it's always a threat, but they apparently got quite a few cards with this one. Thank goodness we caught them and called to verify.

Not really sure where the update e-mail was from, we didn't get it, just sites being set-up using cards gained from the e-mail.

You mean to say that there are ppl stupid enough to send an email with their credit card details in it, without making any attempt to encrypt it, or verify that they have the correct target address?

Wow, no wonder the CC companies put no-Internet clauses in their T&C's!

Check out a site we host called observers.net for information on AOL.

Not just some people, a lot of people. Consider the average AOL user (nothing against AOL). They need AOL because it holds your hand through the internet. They aren't computer savvy and definitely don;t keep up with computer news. They'll answer anything looking official...including giving cc info, social security number, address, phone..everything a cc scammer would need.

Surely, however, the onus is on the ISP (whether they are AOL, or some local outfit) to ensure their customers are aware of the security and privacy implications of the web? Legally, it isn't, but morally they should ensure customers understand that information such as CC details should be encrypted, and tell them how they know it is being encrypted.

It's a shame that these things happen, because the long term effect is loss of confidence by consumers in buying online.

AOL doesn't hold your hand through the internet, they hold your hand through their entire AOL network, which is not part of the internet.

All those AOL keyword sites are only accessible from the AOL network, which is not the internet. So many people that join AOL and don't really wonder why they can't use IE or NN.

There is a button or text entry in the AOL browser that lets them go to the internet, but most of those people don't know what their doing, that's why they join AOL, for email.

I'd rather be on WebTV....LOL
