I'm here for several days and stay close looking at so so so many requests on webhosting.
I realised most people who advertise "this plan" and "that plan" for certain potential customer are mostly customized to suit what they need.
Yeah, maybe it's good. But how do you manage them? I believe there must be somebody here who only waits for people request a hosting plan, and reply back with the exact price this guy is asking for. I click on all of the advertisers' sites and found nothing that matches what they offer, and even far far away from their original plans on the site.
Would it really be a good idea and how many customers do you really get after posting such a customized plan.

Most of the custom plans involved mainly bandwidth or storage space which might differ from the current existing plan. I believe that the web host has a chart or an undisclosed formula on how they derive their hosting for plans and thus with that come out with the custom plans and the pricing.
Of course when it involved pricing, they would probably use that computation to determine how best to match the client pricing.
You could probably use a spreadsheet or something to do the costing. It should not be too difficult to achieve.
If you use Cpanel/WHM, it would be easy to build custom plans and what to include and how much to include for each requested feature.
I believe you can be successful especially when you are responding to someone requesting for a custom quote. Different people have different needs and the one which could match that need would most likely get the client.
Of course, it is important to compute the cost element and not to price the plan to put you at any disadvantage.
Custom plans are more or less doing business one-on-one. It takes more work but you get more satisfied customers.
As for putting up special offers which are different from the norm such as double web space or bandwidth or discounted pricing, it can be used to attract new sales without affecting the current clientele.
Although we do not do web hosting but we do provide customized pricing for some group of customers.

I'm not sure how well it would work for true hosting, but as we mainly provide dedicated servers and colocation, we have a work order for every customer with the specifics on their plan. I keep a copy of this document in the customer's file. I would imagine a spreadsheet would be your best bet as it is quick and easy. Many billing software packages also allow for "notes" which you could make use of to document the plan details.

Nothing hard about "managing" a custom plan.
- Customer posts what they want.
- You work out an offer.
- You Post a response.
- Customer Signs up.
- All are happy.
Whats hard about managing that ?
