Hello.. i was wondering... should or can i use ipv6 instead of ipv4 ip addresses for hosting? I hear they are more secure because the average computer can view them but they cant find the exact ip? Any drawbacks? More Benifits?
If you are not familiar with IPv6 it is the new type of ips that are coming out because the old IPv4 is almost used up...
check it out at www.ipv6.org
thanks

I don't think you can as most ISPs are not routing IPV6

There are methods for migrating from IPv4 to IPv6 ... such as 6over4 tunnels and what not. 6bone has been operational for several years showing that functionality.
At this point, it's probably still a bit early to be jumping on the v6 bandwagon. IMO, there's still lots of challenges to migrating towards v6 as IDS's and firewalls have to be ramped up. Alot of networking companies have some support for v6, but alot of it is still in the "lab use" stages. At one point, I had a 6bone connection to my apartment, but I let that go awhile back.

If your provider is part of the 6bone then they can give you your own /48 of ipv6 ip addresses. If they dont you have to apply for a tunnel through a tunnel broker which you have to renew on a regular basis unless you go through www.he.net. Its kind of a pain to get it all setup but once you do its nice 'cause theres no spoofing, better routing, etc. So if somebody wants to attack you they can't hide who they are. If you want you can have your sites available for ipv4 and ipv6 users... just a matter of configuration. www.hs247.com has a lot of good articles and programs. You can also check out www.6bone.net. For right now I use it only for IRC'ing so morons can't DDoS my poor innocent cable modem. As the others have said, I would hold off 'cause its a huge pain to get it set up. I only do it on my home network just to tinker. Don't think I'd take the time on a production server. If you want to go with ipv6 ONLY then ipv4 users won't be able to view your page unless they have a tunnel from a tunnel broker...
