View Full Version : Ordering XP 1800 through Mainarea/Nocster and splitting between 3 people
RossMAN 02-09-2003, 10:36 PM How does Mainarea compare to other Nocster resellers?
What are some other Nocster resellers that I should consider and why?
I wish that they accepted credit cards and offered another layer of tech support (for simple issues that do not require physical access to the server) but I can live with those shortcomings.
Their Valentine's Day Special for $107/mo (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=111562) with $0 setup has me drooling.
I'm also trying to find 2 other people from another forum to split the resources and cost 3 ways, $36 per person with $107 upfront (3 months). I have already found 1 person who is seriously interested now we just have to find one more person and very soon.
So what do you all think?
Thanks in advance!
Ross

eddy2099 02-09-2003, 11:01 PM RossMan,
MainArea is pretty active on this board but as for comments about them, I cannot say since I got my server direct from Nocster.
In any case, why don't you post your request to share the server in an appropriate Advertising forum. I believe you get better results there.
I do not think you could make an offer in the 'Dedicated Server' forum as per the Rules :-

RossMAN 02-09-2003, 11:10 PM Thanks for the reply Edwin but this is not a webhosting request, if you'll notice I said I'm looking for someone else to split costs from another forum not here.
I just want feedback regarding mainarea/Nocster, the XP 1800, people who have split a server between 2 or more people, etc.
eddy2099 02-09-2003, 11:17 PM Oh Okay. I guess I must have misread your posting since you were like comprehensive on the issue of how you want to spilt the cost and the fact that you mentioned that you already got one and looking for two more. It does seems that you were offering to share too.
Of course, if that part was skipped then probably it would not be viewed that way. Always sorry.
If you are looking to pay via Credit card, you could opt to do it directly at Nocster.com , you be paying ($99.95 + $19.95) $119.90 or $12.90 more for the same configuration or $4/mth more each person.
DarktidesNET 02-10-2003, 12:21 AM I've never used a reseller before (For nocster) only went through them.
I ordered the XP (1.53 ghz) from mainarea though for a few reasons:
1) Slightly cheaper than nocster (if you *can* save a few bucks and get the same product, why not?)
2) He's active here, which is a good sign
3) He was a really nice guy in our email conversations
It's not like the product is going to be different, only the price (which is an advantage). I don't know about the other resellers though, and I cannot comment on him other than our email conversations.
You're still going through nocster either way though.

Just make sure that you know these other 2 people very well and you trust them. Relationships like this can turn sour fast and before you know it, you're left holding the baby...:eek2: :D

Thank you, that is one of my top concerns. So far the first partner I trust, just hope another can step forward in the next 1-2 days otherwise we'll miss the opportunity :(
cybotix 02-10-2003, 01:57 AM who gets root?
clockwork 02-10-2003, 02:06 AM I'm not a business man, but the risk factor surely does not justify splitting the server for saving a few bucks.
What are you thinking?
eddy2099 02-10-2003, 02:10 AM True, I wouldn't enjoy doing the spiltting myself. Of course, if you make the necessary calculated risk and could easily find replacement and cover the cost of any inconveniences, why not.
Find people you know and trust and that would save you a lot of trouble.

Whoever gets root becomes the default sysadmin. Amd the other 2 would wanna hope that person knows their stuff and that person is available 24*7*365 to solve server issues. [and there will be issues :D] Although it depends on the level of trust between the 3 server owners, as to if they could all share root. Trust is the key here.
It also depends on what they're wanting to do on that server too. You might get 2 other chaps who want to run heavy apps that they should only be running on a ded, on the shared server. Maybe they can't afford the ded and this is a cheap way for them to almost a ded server....:eek3: :D

Good question. I would probably be in charge of billing (paying the $107/mo and collecting the $36/mo from the 2 other people).
The person who knows the most would have access to root, that would not be me.
DarktidesNET 02-10-2003, 10:34 AM If I split the box I'd expect root right there.

Ross,
We're looking into a credit card solution besides PayPal, but with all the problems lately with 3rd party processing, we want to make sure the company we deal with doesn't have any problems.
Although we don't offer a second layer of tech support, Nocster offers quick support on AIM (they've gotten better lately). We're not always around, but if you have a question about CPanel or WHM, I'd be glad to help if you just email me or sales. We will setup nameservers if you need, and help you with the configuration of WHM.
If anybody has any suggestions for us, please post them or email me, we look into every suggestion we get.
Thanks,
Matt Leibner

mainarea 02-10-2003, 11:07 AM Also, note that CPanel has come out with a VPS solution, but details are very sketchy right now... Email CPanel for more info, screenshots are available at http://layer1.cpanel.net/ towards the bottom of the page. The screenshots don't really explain it well, so if you really want to know about it, contact them directly.
Thanks,

Reply from Nocster when I inquired about Mainarea:

Yes, Matt is one of our more qualified and stable resellers.

mainarea 02-10-2003, 11:22 AM I'm glad to hear that from Nocster. I have very good relations with their staff, they're very helpful. As of now, we're Nocster's largest reseller, and we hope to keep selling servers at a good rate, to stay on top.

I understand your reasons for not offering credit card payments for the time being. And as you said in the advertising thread you can still pay with Paypal using your credit card as the source of funds which I'll more than likely do, plus the lower transaction fees are passed onto us.
What is a VPS solution?
beachtrader - Thanks for the info, very helpful :)

Virtual Private Server. Just like a ded server, but a ded server split up into several smaller servers where each user has root etc.

RossMAN 02-10-2003, 12:44 PM Thanks Aussie Bob!
So how does VPS differ from a resellers account and are they considerably more expensive?

Generally more expensive, yes. Also WHM VPS is not stable, IMO, for commercial use.
Esr Tek 02-10-2003, 03:00 PM Thought Hard on the partner thing... However I rather have more of a foundation built first. Sorry :(
I did just go ahead and order me the xp1800 :)
