How many offer shell access?

I am thinking about making it so noone can have it because I was hacked before where the person ran a program that really screwed the server up. I looked at the thing they ran and it somehow was to get the root pass.

You might consider using SSH, as that is much more secure than regular telnet... It encrypts the data between the server and the user, whereas telnet does not.

We offer SSH for those who need it, but require some form of identification before we grant it so we can verify that all the information provided in their account is accurate. This way, we know exactly who has access to SSH, and the fact that they know that we know this makes them much less likely to try to exploit security... That's my view, anyway.

Not much use if you don't for people who want to install BBS and scripts. It's no fun unpacking locally, FTPing and trying to set the permissions with a web-based file manager.

I agree with Brian...get some sort of I.D. before you give access to it.
