View Full Version : Centmin Mod - Nginx / MariaDB auto installer
eva2000 01-15-2012, 01:51 PM Centmin Mod (http://centminmod.com/) is a modified version of BTCentral's original Centmin Project (http://centmin.com/) (WHT thread (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=981088)).
Started it's own thread separate from original Centmin thread (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=981088), as some end users are confusing the two versions.
What is Centmin Mod ?
I started modifying Ben's awesome original Centmin script (http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=981088) for my own needs specifically for vBulletin/wordpress usage with MariaDB MySQL performance fork alternative to MySQL community release versions and slowly it grew to what it is now, Centmin Mod project (http://centminmod.com/) with a full on shell menu based installer. You can see it in action on live site Centminmod.com (http://centminmod.com/) which runs on 5x LEB CentOS 6.0 32bit OpenVZ VPSes.
It auto installs Nginx web server with log rotation along with various software: PHP-FPM with log rotation, better performing MySQL fork, MariaDB 5.2.x MySQL server, Memcached v1.4.10, Memcache v3.0.5, choice of PHP opcode cachers like Xcache v1.3.2 and APC Cache v3.1.9, CSF Firewall, Siege benchmark as well as CentOS updated version of Python v2.7.2. Also included is a custom ioping.sh disk i/o benchmark script which is a wrapper script to use ioping to test disk's random and sequential disk speeds.

Tips:
SSH2 Telnet client tip
If your SSH2 Telnet client options allow for it you can increase the size of your scroll back buffer size to allow larger amounts of outputted text to be shown via scrolling back and forth. This is the option in VanDyke SecureCRT SSH2 telnet client I use. I set my scrollback buffer to maximum size of 128,000 lines (http://vbtechsupport.com/centminmenu/screenshots/scrollbackbuffer.png).
Centmin Mod upgrade tip
If you are upgrading a server which already previously had Centmin Mod installed, you DO NOT need to run option #1, instead run option #4 and then option #5 for upgrading Nginx web server and upgrading PHP.
Centmin Mod FAQ (http://centminmod.com/faq.html)
Best to first test install on a local CentOS server i.e. install VMWARE, VirtualBOX etc to create a test server if you can to get a feel for the script.
PHP upgrade is failing for me - not sure if this is a non-mod problem

Vinayak_Sharma 01-23-2012, 09:43 PM I did the upgrade, it was flawless.
Any plans to add subversion installation to the script?
leckley 01-23-2012, 10:04 PM I see there is another Nginx installer here that supports more software installs - http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1117043
Might be nice to add a few of those to yours?

I see there is another Nginx installer here that supports more software installs - http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?t=1117043
Might be nice to add a few of those to yours? No plans to add some of those items as they aren't needed, i.e. eaccelerator and ftp app (use something like winscp instead on your end)
StartAgain 01-28-2012, 06:21 PM Could you run a low traffic wordpress installation with this script on half a meg of RAM?

d1srupt3r 01-29-2012, 09:47 AM Hello everyone! I just installed centmin mod in my vmware and it was successful. I am a newbie here and I want to learn more about nginx.
Since there's no control panel here like cPanel or Plesk(which I was used to), I am wondering how to setup/add/edit ftp accounts for domains(vhosts) added?
And also, what is the default username/password for memcache.php?
Thank you and I am very much excited to play with this and eventually use it in my existing website. My site is currently running nginx as proxy + apache2 + Plesk and I want to get rid of Plesk because it costs so much.
d1srupt3r 01-29-2012, 10:42 AM I also forgot to ask. I know this sounds crazy but I really need to use like .htaccess in apache (because of the software I bought). I have successfuly converted the htaccess properly for nginx using this tool: http://www.anilcetin.com/convert-apache-htaccess-to-nginx/
Now what's next? Will still use .htaccess file but with nginx rewrite rule inside? or does nginx uses different filename for htaccess? Sorry for this newbie questions. I'vee been searching the net for weeks to successfully migrate to nginx.
eva2000 01-29-2012, 11:38 AM Could you run a low traffic wordpress installation with this script on half a meg of RAM?
Thanks for posting this - you rock!You could but depends on traffic and database concurrency load levels and you may need to further tune nginx, php-fpm and mariadb mysql settings based on those concurrency load levels.

My site is currently running nginx as proxy + apache2 + Plesk and I want to get rid of Plesk because it costs so much.there is no default password for memcache.php, you set the password at install time when it prompts you for memcache admin username and password. You can change in in the memcache.php file itself though.
As to learning about nginx 2 best sources on the internet are
http://wiki.nginx.org/
http://forum.nginx.org/
Adding vhosts http://centminmod.com/faq.html#setupvhostdns as to ftp, you'll have to add that yourself. Google.com is your friend or ask on this forum.

No nginx doesn't support htaccess so accessing .htaccess won't work, so you need nginx's own rewrite rule format/syntax to be added to virtual host record for your nginx added vhost. Again best sources to look at are
http://wiki.nginx.org/
http://forum.nginx.org/

eva2000 02-06-2012, 10:01 AM Centmin Mod v1.2.2-eva2000.11 released with quite a few updates. Tested on CentOS 5.7, 6.0 and 6.2 64bit.
v1.2.2-eva2000.11 – 06/02/2012
Updated PHP from v5.3.9 to v5.3.10 http://www.php.net/archive/2012.php#id2012-02-02-1
Updated Nginx from v1.1.11 to v1.1.14 http://nginx.org/en/CHANGES
Updated Memcached server from v1.4.10 to v1.4.13
Updated MariaDB my.cnf templates adding skip-pbxt_statistics & skip-archive
Updated Pigz v2.2.2 to v2.2.3
Updated Nginx upgrade routine with NGINXUPGRADESLEEP=’20′ variable to customise how long between Nginx stop command and when source upgrade’s make command is run. On some systems Nginx service shutdown doesn’t immediately or cleanly shutdown Nginx processes, causing Nginx upgrade to fail. The upgrade routine for Nginx will now have a NGINXUPGRADESLEEP =20 second initial delay after Nginx service is shutdown before make is run. The upgrade routine then will check if Nginx processes are still running and if so, trigger a 2nd NGINXUPGRADESLEEP = 20 second delay before running make. You can adjust the delay via NGINXUPGRADESLEEP=’20′.
Fixed plzip download url
Fixed lzip download url
Fixed autoconf/autoconf-2.1.3 PHP-FPM compile on CentOS 5.7
Increased nginx.conf gzip level from default 1 to 7
Added ImageMagicK via YUM install
Added Suhosin PHP Extension Menu Install option for php-fpm
Added FFMPEG via YUM install + FFMPEG PHP extension for php-fpm

jaypeesmith 02-10-2012, 12:15 AM When I first saw what you were doing I thought "Cool but, what good would it be for me?" I tested it out, then reinstalled and tried to do virtualmin with nginx support. I have to say, I'm back to looking at this script. Why? Because it just makes sense.
Kudos to you for all the hard work. This is quite amazing.
chrisxp 02-10-2012, 03:48 AM Hi,
Just a quick question;
Is it safe to delete /svr-setup folder, or is it required once everythings running?
Only got a 2.5GB VPS and no disk space left :(

Hi,
Just a quick question;
Is it safe to delete /svr-setup folder, or is it required once everythings running?

Deleting it should be safe, it just means when you reinstall stuff like memcached, xcache, apc, you have to redownload all of them again so use up bandwidth. Upgrading disk space would better in the long term :)
CrByte 02-12-2012, 11:05 PM Is centmin mod using sockets or TCP connections for FPM Pools as i have read that using sockets are faster.
eva2000 02-13-2012, 02:32 PM default TCP but php config files have setup option for sockets too just need to comment out TCP settings and uncomment socket version in php-fpm.conf
i.e.
listen = 127.0.0.1:9000
listen.allowed_clients = 127.0.0.1
;listen.backlog = -1
;listen = /tmp/php5-fpm.sock
and the php.conf include in file /usr/local/nginx/conf/php.conf
location ~ \.php$ {
try_files $uri =404;
fastcgi_split_path_info ^(.+\.php)(/.+)$;
fastcgi_pass 127.0.0.1:9000;
#fastcgi_pass unix:/tmp/php5-fpm.sock;

eva2000 02-26-2012, 03:01 PM Don't need iptable rule for memcached 11211 as csf preset custom settings in /etc/csf/conf.conf has it. I already set csf to allow memcached 11211 and 11212 by default.

correctly for a better optimization vps this Centmin is supposed to be enabled or disabled Opcode Cache & Variable Cache ?

I already have the problem XCache and it works :)
Another problem is...

check your /etc/csf/csf.allow and deny files making sure vps IP isn't in block list it should do that and never have that happen before

eva2000 02-29-2012, 09:25 PM the problem is that the CSF enabled the blocks-long connection to the VPS.not sure i understand what you're saying ? blocks wrong ips or long connections as in ?
What type of VPS is this ? XEN, KVM, OpenVZ, Virtuozzo ? Does VPS use eth0/1 network adaptors or venet0 labeled ones ?
Not sure if this still applies for Virtuozzo / venet0 based VPS http://forum.configserver.com/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=4095

eva2000 03-01-2012, 11:27 AM Strange then as http://centminmod.com/ site itself runs on 3x OpenVZ based VPS with CSF enabled and no problems at all with CentOS 6.x 32bit.
Are you running any reverse proxies in front of nginx which may not pass along the correct visitor ip address without some changes i.e. cloudflare http://support.cloudflare.com/kb/troubleshooting/does-cloudflare-have-an-ip-module-for-nginx.

centmin.sh upgrade php 5.3.10 to 5.4.0
PHP 5.4 has not been tested with centmin so downgrade back to 5.3.10 for now. Also be sure all your scripts work with PHP 5.4 changes and migration guide http://php.net/migration54
Also there's a few bugs in 5.4.0 so wait for 5.4.1
eva2000 03-02-2012, 03:26 PM Ok, i have fixed the problem for v0.12 release of centmin mod, if you want to fix it before then edit centmin-v1.2.2mod/inc/php_configure.inc and change
-with-mysql=/usr/bin
to
--with-mysql=/usr
no idea why it was incorrectly set before as it should be /usr
But still no guarantee of compatibility with your php scripts if using PHP 5.4.0 so use at your own risk.
next release will be v1.2.2-eva2000.12 later on

you're welcome :)
how to full upgrading ( update & fixed and Revised ) a server which already previously had Centmin Mod installed , run option #1 ?
no, from faq #1 http://centminmod.com/faq.html#howtoinstall
If you are upgrading a server which already previously had Centmin Mod installed, you DO NOT need to run option #1, instead run option #4 and then #5 for upgrading Nginx web server and upgrading PHP.
no way currently to upgrade everything.. #6 or #7 (not both), #10 and #20 can be run for apc or xcache, memcached and NSD updates though
thanks eva2000

ondemand was introduced in 5.3.9

kafloofen 03-23-2012, 03:32 PM Regarding this line in /usr/local/nginx/conf/php.conf
# PHP only, required if PHP was built with --enable-force-cgi-redirect
fastcgi_param REDIRECT_STATUS 200;
Is this the same as cgi.force_redirect having a value of 1? So if there's cgi.force_redirect 1 1 then we should not delete that line (fastcgi_param REDIRECT_STATUS 200; )?
Is that right?
Thanks in advance.

Thanks in advance.Not entirely sure, AFAIK cgi.force_redirect (http://www.php.net/manual/en/ini.core.php#ini.cgi.force-redirect) php.ini value only works if web server - usually apache or in this case nginx supports it. For Nginx to support it, it needs
fastcgi_param REDIRECT_STATUS 200;
In other words, if you remove this line, cgi.force_redirect (http://www.php.net/manual/en/ini.core.php#ini.cgi.force-redirect) in php.ini won't work.

what version of centos used ? 5.7 32bit or 64bit or centos 6.0, 6.1, 6.2 ? only version of centos I have yet to test is 5.8. Centmin Mod has been tested on centos 5.5, 5.6, 5.7, 6.0, 6.1, and 6.2 64bit.
investorz 03-31-2012, 06:41 AM Dear eva2000, first, my compliments on the professional manner in which this installer has been designed. It is the best auto-installer today. Many thanks for it.
I installed it on a test site and was so impressed that I am planning to move my main site (~5000 + visitors per day) onto it.
I have three questions.
First, why is NSD DNS Sever not included given that (i) it is a part of Centmin and (ii) relies on it for setting up the domains? Also, the script does not indicate that NSD is not installed and instead give a message that the domain zone is created.
So, I installed it separately with the command yum install nsd.
After that I ran the centmin script and chose option 3: This is the error I get:
“Creating zone file at /etc/nsd/master/domain.net.zone
---------------------------------------------
cat: /etc/nsd/master/domain.net.zone: No such file or directory
---------------------------------------------
Current zone files listing at: /etc/nsd/master/
ls: cannot access /etc/nsd/master/: No such file or directory
---------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------
NSD entry for domain.net created successfully in /etc/nsd/nsd.conf
NSD zone created at /etc/nsd/master/domain.net.zone
The messages are contradictory. Also, a look at the etc/nsd folder shows that no /master/ folder is created.
Can you pl help to solve this problem.
Second, isn't this title (in the FAQ) somewhat misleading (to a novice) "How to setup domain / subdomain to use NSD DNS so I can host DNS on my own server instead of using my web host, registrar or DNS service provider's name servers?" To me, it suggested that this was an option to what one had to do at the registrar. However, it appears not to be an option at all. At the registrar's, one has to set the IP address for the nameservers. At the localhost, one has to setup the nameservers using the NSD DNS server. So, both have to be done simultaneously. Pl correct me if I am wrong.
Third, what does this mean?
ns1/ns2 assigned ip addresses can not be used to host other domain names
What I have been doing so far (with Webmin & Kloxo control panels) is to set up nameservers for each domain at the registrar (namecheap) and point them to the same IP address. In Webmin/Kloxo, one can set up multiple domain master zones with the same IP. Is that not possible with Centminmod?
canar 03-31-2012, 08:04 AM which version of php do you enter when prompted during upgrade ? 5.3.10 ?

eva2000 03-31-2012, 08:15 AM investorz, NSD is usually installed for centmin mod by default but via source compile and not YUM/RPM so if you didn't find the install, it could be NSD failed to install for some reason. NSD 3.2.8 had some issues, so v0.13 installs NSD 3.2.10 from changelog http://centminmod.com/changelog.html, so make sure you have NSD_VERSION='3.2.10' listed in centmin.sh script and then run menu option #20, for NSD Re-install.
Might want to remove YUM installed NSD first though to prevent conflicts.
As to NSD setup FAQ page, I've updated the latter part to clarify things including the statement regarding ip address usage for nameservers/domain names. http://centminmod.com/nginx_domain_dns_setup.html

Weird indeed. If you have option to reload your OS i.e. solusVM control panel to start fresh. You can attempt a fresh centmin mod install but this time log the entire process as outlined from FAQ at http://centminmod.com/faq.html#loginstall
When you hit php-fpm make failure. End the centmin.sh script and exit and look at the log file to see what's going on. Or you can let the entire centmin.sh script complete, then exit menu and then exit logging and view that log file. Don't post entire contents of log file here though, would be too long to read heh.
investorz 04-01-2012, 12:15 AM Dear eva2000, uninstalling and reinstalling NSD as suggested by you solved the problem. It was smooth sailing thereafter.
Memcache is working as shown by phpinfo. But I get the error "Cant connect to:mymemcache-server1:11211" when I access memcache.php. Is is a firewall problem? Would you have a ready solution?

investorz 04-01-2012, 02:30 AM Now I've got stuck with permalinks. Suppose I have one domain with two WP installations in folders called WP1 & WP2. What changes do I make to the domain.conf file?
investorz 04-01-2012, 03:38 AM I seem to have stumbled on a solution to the problem of enabling permalinks for multiple Wordpress folders in one domain.
In the domain.conf file (which you will find at /usr/local/nginx/conf/conf.d) add a "location block" for each folder. My sample is as follows:
server {
server_name mydomain.com www.mydomain.com;
# limit_conn
limit_per_ip 16;
# ssi on;
access_log
/home/nginx/domains/mydomain.com/log/access.log;
error_log
/home/nginx/domains/mydomain.com/log/error.log;
root
/home/nginx/domains/mydomain.com/public;
location / {
# Enables directory listings when index file not found
#autoindex on;
# Shows
file listing times as local time
#autoindex_localtime on;
# Enable for
vBulletin usage WITHOUT vbSEO installed
#try_files / /index.php;
}
location /WP1 {
try_files $uri $uri/ /WP1/index.php?q=$uri$is_args$args;
}
location /WP2 {
try_files $uri $uri/ /WP2/index.php?q=$uri$is_args$args;
}
location /WP3 {
try_files $uri $uri/ /WP3/index.php?q=$uri$is_args$args;
}
location /WP4 {
try_files $uri $uri/ /WP4/index.php?q=$uri$is_args$args;
}

include
/usr/local/nginx/conf/php.conf;
include /usr/local/nginx/conf/drop.conf;

How is it that the Plesk site shows RAM consumption at 205MB while the Centminmod site shows it at 610MB? The only incremental thing I added to Centmin is phpmyadmin (which is also there in the plesk site)

investorz 04-02-2012, 06:30 AM I have a Level 3 VPS with hostgator running Apache & Plesk. The 1.3 Ghz CPU & 768 MB RAM is wholly inadequate and whenever I posted something which drew even 80-100 concurrent vistors, the VPS would crash. This is not HG’s fault but the sheer weight of Apache & Plesk.
So, I moved to a Level 2 “Premium” VPS with burstnet.eu. I was attracted to Burst because for a lesser price ($ 20), it gives much more in the form of a 2.5Ghz CPU, 1-2 GB RAM and a supposed less crowded space.
I installed Centminmod. I do not have a control panel. The transfer of 10+ GB data took only a few moments though the configuration took several hours owing to my learning curve. I moved 5 domains over.
My Centminmod site is now, content wise, an exact replica of my Apache-Plesk site.
The RAM figures of both in the morning were as follows:
In Apache-Plesk (nil visitors)
[root@ind ~]# free -m
total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 768 209 558 0 0 0
-/+ buffers/cache: 209 558

After that I posted something that drew about 1800 clicks in 30 minutes. The number of concurrent visitors touched 250+ and there is a constant load of about 100 concurrent visitors throughout. The visitors don’t just browse, they also download pdf files which are about 2-3 MB in weight.
If this had been my Apache-Plesk site, the site would have collapsed a long while ago. Pleasantly, the Centminmod site didn’t wince at all. The max that my RAM touched was 300 MB and the CPU 4%.
So, I think it was definitely worth my while to jettison Apache-Plesk and go for Centminmod.

investorz 04-02-2012, 01:14 PM Well, I can confirm that v1.2.2-eva2000.14 is NOT compatible with Centos 6. I suggest you should have a prominent warning next to the download page so people are warned before installation. The present warning is a bit obscure I thought.
investorz 04-02-2012, 01:23 PM Well I tried to install v1.2.2-eva2000.14 on Centos 5 and ran into trouble there as well. Haven't noted the errors down.

For Xen 32bit OS users on 64bit host nodes, please read FAQ note regarding ARCH_OVERRIDE value you need to enable for Centmin Mod or Original Centmin script to work.

investorz 04-02-2012, 02:28 PM it seems to be a template problem. Its got stuck at the 'updating popt' part.

I try to run chown -R www-data:www-data /webdir, but it said there is no www-data user
eva2000 04-03-2012, 08:32 PM I loaded v1.2.2-eva2000.14 on another Centos 6 64 bit machine and it worked flawlessly. Would love to install it on my production site but I am running 32 bit there. If I try an upgrade there and something goes wrong, can it be uninstalled without hurting the site?upgrade from what an existing centmin mod installation ? i.e. 0.13 to 0.14 ? There shouldn't be any problems if upgrade is from existing centmin mod install. Worse case is just re-run the nginx and php upgrade routines for and specify the previous nginx and php versions. i.e. if upgrading from 0.13 to 0.14 nginx versions from v1.1.17 to v1.1.18. If that fails, just re-run upgrade menu option but specify v1.1.17 instead.
Currently no uninstall routines, but working on one for disabling centmin mod installed options.

I try to run chown -R www-data:www-data /webdir, but it said there is no www-data user unless you changed nginx's default user/group, then the default user/group for centmin mod is nginx:nginx not www-data:www-data.

investorz 04-04-2012, 07:59 AM Dear eva2000,
Is sendmail included in the installation. I don't see it listed. (it is in centmin). If not, is there an easy tutorial to receive and send mail using the server?
I'll try the upgrade on a slow day after taking a backup. (I have 32 bit ... hope that won't be a problem).
At the moment, centminmod is working very well keeping my RAM and CPU cool as a cucumber even when I get spikes of traffic.
I'm having trouble to install centmin-v1.2.2-eva2000.14 on my fresh install VPS CentOS 5.7 (32-bit). It has SSD and 1gb ram.
After the installation, all standard command like yum, vi etc doesn't work even as root. The commands work before the installation.
Any advice?

yes sendmail is indeed by default, but no tutorials, you will have to search for sendmail + centos tutorials via google or better yet just use google app free email @yourdomain.com which is what i do for my domains :)

Never seen that happen before, i know after install you can't update php and mysql via YUM as i set it so in /etc/yum.conf exclude listing. What does your /etc/yum.conf contents look like now ?
should look like something like this if on 64bit centOS
[main]
cachedir=/var/cache/yum
keepcache=0
debuglevel=2
logfile=/var/log/yum.log
distroverpkg=redhat-release
tolerant=1
exactarch=1

exclude=*.i386 *.i586 *.i686 mysql* php*

Same here although on CentOS 5.5 and instead I just wanted to update PHP, then it just broke my VPS, disabling SSH and all standard commands, and unfortunately lost some files, o well.

I suspect it is a problem with the VPS and not the script. I tried installing it repeatedly on UBServers and Alien Layer (on their cheapest annual plan) on multiple occasions and it failed.
The same thing on another UBServers' VPS (bit of an upgrade plan) worked.
It also worked flawlessly on Burstnet and BHost.
So, it appears that the cheapest of the cheap VPS' block some port or the other and that throttles the script. Of course, this is only my guess and not based on any evidence.
Also, there seem to be issues with the 32 bit Centos 6. Try the 64 bit Centos 6 and it works well.
There is also a problem with the NSD installation. You have to invariably "reinstall" it later.
But all said and done, it is a superb installer and keeps your VPS cool as a cucumber even in times of great stress (I just had 350+ concurrent visitors and the VPS did not even blink). So, it is worth a bit of trouble-shooting to get it right.

Tell me please, how can i setup WinSCP user for upload and download to nginx home directory?google search for useradd & usermod commands for centos for adding users. But centmin mod isn't setup for shared hosting where every user has their own username/password for their own accounts. Maybe in future but not now.
Other folks can share their tips for this if they want though :)

Yeah unfortunately, I can't test every VPS type out there and every VPS provider may have differences in their setups.
I have had no problems with CentOS 6.x 32bit for buyvm.net OpenVZ and KVM based VPSes and on chicagovps.net OpenVZ CentOS 6.x 32bit and CentOS 5.7/5.8/6.0/6.1/6.2 64bit on VirtualBox local test servers.
NSD issue is that happening all the time, or that once time you experienced it ?
Heads up, also updated Nginx configure page for some example configs for cloudflare, vbulletin 4 rewrites, xenforo rewrites and wordpress http://centminmod.com/nginxconfigure/

I believe it was 1.2.2-eva2000.04, a version from October. I just wanted to update things. I mean I never had any problems before, used to work flawlessly every time I used this, but now I'm having issues installing centmin on centos 5.5. I used a centos 6 image and everything seems to be working again.
But yeah, its pretty weird.
eva2000 04-10-2012, 01:59 PM Quite a few changes since 1.2.2-eva2000.04 http://centminmod.com/changelog.html but never see it break ssh itself and lose files.

To clarify, the script didn't delete any files or anything like that.
What exactly happen was this, normally the script takes at least 20 minutes to complete a fully install. However, this time when I reached the point where it installs the development tools, something would happen (maybe errors) and it would skip all the way to the end like it completed the installation in a matter of like 5 minutes or so.
If I scroll up, i can see that it said it was installing php, mariadb and what not but in actuality it didn't and just skipped it.
After I exit the menu, all the normal shell commands would not register, things like ls, vi, cd and stuff don't get recognized and I was just stuck.
If I close the ssh session, I wasn't able to connect back to it (connection refused every time, even the solusVM console counted connect, and restarting of the VPS caused it not being able to boot back up anymore.
I didn't expect SSH to stop working anymore or not being able to boot the vps back up so I lost all my files I had on there.
Exactly the same situation that ujai described with centos 5.7 on the previous page of this thread.
eva2000 04-11-2012, 01:45 AM Weird.. either way it always pays to have back ups for your files and data on your VPS regardless - preferably remotely hosted.
Leriss 04-11-2012, 02:26 PM Hello,
I'm having an issue with getting NSD to work, I always get this error for example:
ls: cannot access /etc/nsd/master/: No such file or directory
I read this topic and I made sure it is the .10 version, I downloaded centmin today anyway.
I'm running CentOS 6.2 32bit on XEN paravirtualization and I did the ARCH thingy mentioned in the FAQ.
Tried re-installing NSD, didn't help.
There are no yum packages for it either installed @
Package(s) nsd* available, but not installed.
No Packages marked for removal
eva2000 04-11-2012, 03:20 PM strange indeed..
everyone having problems with NSD install, can you provide
centos version used
32bit or 64bit
virtualisation type: xen, kvm, openvz, vmware
If any of you are able to freshly reload their operating system and willing to provide me root access, i will when I have some spare time, try a test run and figure out what's going on. You can contact me (http://vbtechsupport.com/contactme/).
Right now i don't have any issues so hard for me to reproduce the problem.
Can't promise to look into everyone's VPS though.

Thanks mate, with v1.2.2-eva2000.15 with auto logging of routines, managed to figure out the problem and fix it :D
Testing the fixed version on my test servers for now before public release.
Just so you folks know what's going into v1.2.2-eva2000.15
v1.2.2-eva2000.15
Updated MariaDB 5.2.11-115 MySQL to MariaDB 5.2.12-115 MySQL http://kb.askmonty.org/en/mariadb-5212-release-notes
Updated APC Cache install and re-install routine including setting up password protected file using htpasswd.py tool
Updated php-fpm.conf files and vhost virtual.conf with pm.status and ping settings. PHP-FPM status/ping is disabled by default, uncomment setting #include /usr/local/nginx/conf/phpstatus.conf; in vhost virtual.conf and restart nginx and php-fpm services to enable. For folks upgrading Centmin Mod, ensure /usr/local/nginx/conf/phpstatus.conf exists, you can find a copy of it in v1.2.2-eva2000.15 zip file's config/nginx/phpstatus.conf location.
Fixed CentOS 6.x EPEL Repo link
Fixed NSD v3.2.10 install/reinstall issue by moving NSD install routine further down the order for installation, seems v3.2.10 complains it can't find the SSL libraries for some reason and fails to compile, so no /etc/nsd directory is created.
Add logging support to menu options. Log directory defined by variable CENTMINLOGDIR='/root/centminlogs' in inc/centminlogs.inc. When run menu option, the entire process will be logged to a time stamped text log file named ${CENTMINLOGDIR}/centminmod_${SCRIPT_VERSION}_${DT}_*.log so you can review the logs for error messages etc.
coming soon, just testing right now

Oh, I wonder if this will fix my issue with 5.5. Actually, is there any reason to not use CentOS 6.x?
eva2000 04-13-2012, 04:55 AM I recommend and prefer centos 6.x - EXT4 out of the box and updated kernel are 2 reasons :D
Misfire 04-14-2012, 01:41 AM I recommend and prefer centos 6.x - EXT4 out of the box and updated kernel are 2 reasons :D
Thanks, def seems faster actually. Mumble used to lag when switching channels, now its instantaneous.
As a note, I initially did have a problem installing centminmod on a CentOS 6 fresh install. Everything would install correctly except for nginx.
The 2nd time I tired again, I disabled NSD from installing, and everything worked correctly.
I also remember when I first did my 5.5 centminmod setup with centminmod 04, I also didn't install NSD, and everything worked prefectly. So I believe your NSD order fix will have fixed both problems.
eva2000 04-14-2012, 04:18 AM New centmin mod v1.2.2-eva2000.15 release today quite a few updates including Nginx v1.1.19, PHP-FPM status page support and MariaDB 5.2.12 as well as updated YUM, APC Cache and NSD install routines.
Useful addition is automated logging to time stamped text files for all menu options so you can review the entire process and troubleshoot errors etc.

I also did an upgrade on two VPS. My maria db does not seem to have been upgraded as is seen from this:

So, is there anything that should be done to upgrade maria db. Also how does one check that the nginx, php-fpm etc have also been upgraded? (the php version is 5.3.10).
d1srupt3r 04-15-2012, 08:27 AM Hi! I tried to install the latest centminmod in my fresh Linode VPS but I am always stuck when downloading ngx-fancyindex-0.3.1.tar.gz.
I tried it on both CentOS 6.2 32&64 bit. Is it only me? Please advice. Thanks everyone!
eva2000 04-15-2012, 09:00 AM Dear eva2000, my compliments for your hard work. v1.2.2-eva2000.15 works very well. I tried it on a cheap $12 pa VPS and there were no issues at all. Even the NSD, which was the trouble-maker in the past, has fallen into line now.
I also did an upgrade on two VPS. My maria db does not seem to have been upgraded as is seen from this:
[root@abc ~]# rpm -qa | grep MariaDB
MariaDB-devel-5.2.10-107.el5.x86_64
MariaDB-client-5.2.10-107.el5.x86_64
MariaDB-server-5.2.10-107.el5.x86_64
MariaDB-shared-5.2.10-107.el5.x86_64
MariaDB-test-5.2.10-107.el5.x86_64
You have new mail in /var/spool/mail/root
[root@abc ~]#for the two VPS what was previous centmin mod version installed ?

in ssh telnet what you do get when you manually run this command as root user
it's a single line command
cd /svr-setup; rm -rf ngx-fancyindex*; wget -c http://gitorious.org/ngx-fancyindex/ngx-fancyindex/archive-tarball/v0.3.1 -O ngx-fancyindex-0.3.1.tar.gz --tries=3

It is just stuck there. I am using Linode hosted in Japan fyi.
eva2000 04-15-2012, 09:41 AM if you try this command does it work ?

basically, i'm hosting the file on centminmod.com instead of gitorious.org
if it works, i'll do a quick update to download zip file
d1srupt3r 04-15-2012, 09:45 AM Yes it's working already using centminmod.com mirror. :)
eva2000 04-15-2012, 09:51 AM K then, updated the v1.2.2-eva2000.15 zip download package for updated mirror for that file :)

eva2000 04-22-2012, 05:57 PM Quick heads up for next Centmin Mod v1.2.2-eva2000.16 release should be some time at end of April, will include updates for APC Cache v3.1.10 which is a beta release for proper PHP 5.4 support.
The php.net folks report PHP 5.4.1 will be released around April 26th, so timing Centmin Mod's next release until after PHP 5.4.1 release should be perfect. Note, Xcache and FFMPEG php extensions I am not sure work with PHP 5.4 yet.
preview of current change log for next version:
v1.2.2-eva2000.16 TBD
Updated APC Cache from v3.1.9 to v3.1.10 beta for PHP 5.4 support http://pecl.php.net/package-changelog.php?package=APC (note: v3.1.10 beta retains v3.1.9 version name in PHPINFO so I modified the APC files to correct version number to v3.1.10 etc)
Updated APC configuration template files with additional settings you will need to manually add these to your /usr/local/lib/php.ini
eva2000 04-28-2012, 08:36 PM Centmin Mod v1.2.2-eva2000.16 released !

Updated APC Cache from v3.1.9 to v3.1.10 beta for PHP 5.4 support http://pecl.php.net/package-changelog.php?package=APC (note: v3.1.10 beta retains v3.1.9 version name in PHPINFO so I modified the APC files to correct version number to v3.1.10 etc)
Updated APC configuration template files with additional settings you will need to manually add these to your /usr/local/lib/php.ini. You can compare using download zip's copy at config/apc/apc-min.ini or apc.ini
Updated staticfiles.conf nginx includes file. You can find updated file in zip dowload config/nginx/staticfiles.conf which you can replace and overwrite the one on server at /usr/local/nginx/conf/staticfiles.conf
Updated nginx.conf and vhost template to add a 32K buffer to access_log logging. Changes aren't updated automatically, you will need to update the /usr/local/nginx/conf/nginx.conf manually to remove line log_format bytes_log "$msec $bytes_sent ."; and add the line access_log logs/access.log combined buffer=32k;. You can compare using download zip's copy at config/nginx/nginx.conf to compare against your live servers copy
Added optional Nginx modules from Agentzh's Openresty bundle, memc-nginx-module and srcache-nginx-module. These modules are disabled by default but can be enabled by setting 'y' for new variable named NGINX_OPENRESTY=n. For more details read https://github.com/agentzh/memc-nginx-module and https://github.com/agentzh/srcache-nginx-module. No support is provided by me, optional modules are provided as is

elvis1 04-29-2012, 06:53 PM thanks george!
how about adding wordpress to the installer?
eva2000 04-29-2012, 10:48 PM thanks
For now, I prefer to leave the front end web applications to the end user to install/manage - keeping the focus on server backend apps :)
kafloofen 04-30-2012, 05:43 AM I tried xcache 2.0.0 and I'm getting these errors when I click on List PHP inside the xcache administration area

eva2000 04-30-2012, 05:57 AM hmmm might not have taken into account the need to update xcache admin on live servers during the xcache 1.3.2 to 2.0.0 upgrade/reinstall routine.
try this
1. rename existing xcacheadmin directory
mv /usr/local/nginx/html/myxcacheadmin /usr/local/nginx/html/myxcacheadmin_old
2. edit php.ini - you can use centmin mod command shortcut = phpedit http://centminmod.com/faq.html#commandshortcuts to quickly get to php.ini
remove entries related to xcache settings and save php.ini file
3. run menu option #8 to Install Xcache
does that work ? if it does you can remove the old version at /usr/local/nginx/html/myxcacheadmin_old
kafloofen 04-30-2012, 07:02 AM Thanks George.
It worked like a charm.
Misfire 05-01-2012, 02:08 AM Where does centminmod store php comp/temp files? My provider decided to restart my vps in the middle of a PHP 5.3.11 upgrade, I am worried about temporary left over files.
I did re-run the upgrade process again successfully, just wondering if theres any temp files I can delete because I want to save space.
Thanks
eva2000 05-01-2012, 05:36 AM Thanks George.
It worked like a charm.
thanks for the confirmation, looks like next version i release has to deal with this in some way for xcache jump from 1.3.2 to 2.0.0 :)

Don't think centminmod installs it there, there is no directory there.
investorz 05-05-2012, 03:30 PM Dear eva2000, I followed the upgrade instructions including reinstall of x-caxche, memcache & sohosin. I had three problems:
(i) I got a "502 Bad Gateway" error immediately after the upgrade was over. I waited several minutes, refreshed the pages several times and the pages were restored. Is this something to do with the buffer?
(ii) PHP mail function is not working. The error is "Could not instantiate mail function." (this is an existing problem and appears to have crept in during the upgrade to v.15)
(iii) When I download pdf files of 1MB+, the download ceases when the files reaches 255KB. Smaller files can be downloaded without a problem. Large files always stop at 255KB. I have tried this with 'wp-downloadmanger' and 'Wordpress Download Monitor'
As a troubleshooting exercise, I uninstalled vsftpd, csf and ip tables. However, as there is no improvement, I suspect it is a php configuration issue.
I am running Centos 6 64 bit.
Based on your vast experience, do you have any ideas on what could be causing the problem? Shall I downgrade to v.14 and see if that helps?
Addendum: The 502 Bad Gateway error is occurring quite regularly
investorz 05-06-2012, 02:11 AM I tried a fresh install on a 128MB Centos 6 32 bit VPS and hit a 502 Gateway error when I try to access memcache.php and myxcacheadmin. The index.html, logo etc are accessible. I uploaded a phpinfo.php file but even that is not accessible. All files are in the default root /usr/local/nginx/html
I'll do a fresh reinstall with v.15 and see what the position is.
investorz 05-06-2012, 03:14 AM Well, I'm happy to report that v.15 works as it should without any 502 gateway errors.
I am worried about what to do on my production site where v.16 seems to have messed things up with recurrent 502 errors. I'll try a downgrade and report.
investorz 05-06-2012, 09:37 AM I downgraded from v.16 to v.14 and seem to have solved the problem of the 502 gateway errors. So, that's a big relief! (the site seems to load faster but that may only be my imagination!)
The problem of download of large files being terminated at 255KB seems to be related to the "force file to download" vs. "open file in browser" setting in php. Where and when did the setting change is a mystery.
phpmail is still not functional.
eva2000 05-07-2012, 09:59 AM Don't think centminmod installs it there, there is no directory there.sounds like CSF wasn't installed, did you select yes when prompted to install CSF when you first installed Centmin Mod ? what version of Centmin Mod ?

502 could be php related, list exact steps you took to
1. upgrade centmin from v0.14 to v0.16
2. to upgrade nginx from version ??? to version ???
3. to upgrade PHP from which PHP version to which PHP upgraded version
4. php mail, is sendmail properly setup ? output of this command
netstat -plant | grep sendmail; php -i | grep sendmail
create test mail.php file with contents, edit to and from email addresses and run mail.php in browser does it work ?
<?php
$to = "yourtoemail@yourdomain.com";
$subject = "Test mail";
$message = "Hello! This is a simple email message.";
$from = "yourfromemail@yourdomain.com";
$headers = "From: $from";
mail($to,$subject,$message,$headers);
echo "Mail Sent.";
?>
I haven't experienced any of these issues myself.
since v1.2.2-eva2000.0.15 added automatic logging you can also check the logs for your upgrade options via command to list the logs

and check individual log files for errors during reinstall or upgrades
investorz 05-07-2012, 11:00 AM Dear eva2000
(i) The output of the command:
[root@abc ~]# netstat -plant | grep sendmail; php -i | grep sendmail
tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:25 0.0.0.0:* LISTEN 1841/sendmail
sendmail_from => no value => no value
sendmail_path => /usr/sbin/sendmail -t -i => /usr/sbin/sendmail -t -i
Path to sendmail => /usr/sbin/sendmail -t -i
(ii) mail.php does not send any mail. I added an else argument and it shows a failure. A solution is to use smtp which works.
(iii) The 502 errors have gone by the downgrade to v. 14. I don't want to mess with that anymore because it works very well. I had 500+ concurrent visitors today downloading pdf files and my RAM did not cross 300MB. So, I am not going to finger that now.
(iv) The download problem is very peculiar because while small files continue to be downloaded normally, large files (1+ MB) files stop downloading at (exactly) 255KB. This is a critical issue for me and if I cannot resolve it, I will have to do a reinstall.
eva2000 05-07-2012, 12:24 PM 1. sendmail, php mail only had one instance of some reporting having such issues and it turned out hotmail/isp blocked their VPS's ip address from receiving email due to being on a spam list so not sure.
2. downloads, just tested on centmin mod local server with 14MB download file and downloaded fine so not sure where the problem would be ???
very strange you keep running up against issues which most folks using centmin mod don't run into :(

have not tested with PHP 5.3.13 yet as per latest tested versions listed on centminmod.com (http://centminmod.com/) web site is only at PHP 5.3.11 (have internallly tested 5.3.12 without probs but not yet 5.3.13).
Tried this method for reinstall of xcache http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showpost.php?p=8095971&postcount=128 ? let me know if that works

eva2000 05-10-2012, 08:14 PM Bump check your install log at /root/centminlogs/ to see why php-fpm failed to install (don't post log as it's too big for forums).
If you can't see the problem, try running PHP upgrade option #5
bump_here 05-11-2012, 06:22 PM Hi eva2000,
Looks like the box has run out of memory when compiling (128mb RAM).
I'll have to have a look at the script to see about passing some cflags to use gcc's garbage collector I'm guessing.
If you have any thoughts, just let me know.
Cheers
Bump
eva2000 05-11-2012, 08:13 PM Minimum you'd want for Centmin Mod is 256MB to take care YUM and MariaDB requirements.
bump_here 05-13-2012, 02:51 PM I'll have to have a think about my approach for this one.
Cheers for the help, It's much appreciated.

Actually CGLAGS for setting lower threshold for gcc garbarge collection may work if you just do it for php-fpm compile. Haven't tried yet. You can find php-fpm compilation includes file at inc/php_configure.inc and tinker with it if you want on a test install.
Looking into a better memory detection routine to accommodate different memory sized servers for certain routines and config file selections. Something for future Centmin Mod versions
i.e. with 128MB total memory size threshold
[root@tools]# ./memcheck.sh
Ok: physically installed memory is sufficient [Installed: 996 MB]
[root@tools]# ./memcheck.sh 131072
Ok: physically installed memory is sufficient [Installed: 128 MB]
[root@tools]# ./memcheck.sh 100000
Warning: physically installed memory too low [Installed: 97 MB < 128 MB]
eva2000 05-15-2012, 10:42 AM I just tried internal testing for centmin mod v1.2.2-eva2000.17 with only 112MB system memory available, full install finished properly but man was it slow, swapped to disk by around 68MB, so yes you'd need at least 180-192MB to complete install safely. Although if you have swap space setup, you could do it very very slowly on 112-192MB system.
For now i setup centmin mod v1.2.2-eva2000.17 to detect less than 256MB installs and warn/abort to save the trouble if you run into issues. You will be able to override aborting install via inc/memcheck.inc file variable for next version centmin mod v1.2.2-eva2000.17 if you want to try a very slow installation with <256MB memory heh.
eva2000 05-19-2012, 09:33 AM Centmin Mod v1.2.2-eva2000.17 released !

eva2000 05-24-2012, 01:22 PM prandah, you still need to setup and register your nameservers with your domain registrar as well update domain's NS records :)
