One thing you might want is a motherboard with integrated lan and video, so that you don't need a riser card. The new NFORCE 2-based motherboards would be a good pick, and have a driver package for Linux. I just recently ordered an MSI K7N2G-L, which is the first widely available NFORCE 2 mobo with integrated graphics (IGP). This runs about $115 shipped right now, and should support 400MHz (PC3200) DDR RAM. Another good choice would be an NFORCE 1 mobo with integrated LAN and video, like the ASUS A7M266-VM. This one runs about $70-$75 shipped, and supports DDR 266 (PC2100). I will add that I am currently using the onboard realtek lan on my Giga-byte KT333 motherboard, along with pci video through a riser card. It's running happily, knock-on-wood. critical 02-08-2003, 10:56 PM which cpu fan do you recommend for athlon xp for 1u..can state the model number atr 02-08-2003, 11:28 PM Originally posted by critical which cpu fan do you recommend for athlon xp for 1u..can state the model number The key here is that the fan needs to be oriented so that it's exhausting instead of blowing on to the cpu. I am currently using this fan in a 2u case: http://www.newegg.com/app/viewproduct.asp?DEPA=&submit=Go&description=jac313c Unfortunately, it's configured to blow on to the cpu, and the server is racked on top of some other servers, so the temperatures are not great. Based on the Anandtech review, I would expect this to do much better configured to exhaust. http://anandtech.com/cooling/showdoc.html?i=1571&p=3 Let me say, however, that my server has been ticking along just fine for two months or so, and in my experience with AMD cpus, I have never had one die (knock-on-wood)--two of them (an Athlon 1100 and an Athlon 1200) have been running at about 70 C because they have crappy heatsinks. innova 02-09-2003, 12:27 PM I agree with ATR. For a 1U case however, you can do no better than this: http://www.dynatron-corp.com/products/cpucooler/cpucooler_model.asp?id=47 I have 3x AMD XP 2400 servers in 1U, they all run under 50C with this fan. THe nforce1 motherboard is a hell of a deal and a good performer as well. Honestly though.. I would actually buy a P4 (533fsb) over the comparable amd XP whatever. The P4 blows it away and runs cooler, for the same price, at least for game hosting. |
