Ok, I just finished making a new network here at home.

I bought a NetGear Prosafe Firewall/Print Server Model: FR114P4

I wired out the house and everything runs good, I setup the computers (All WinXP) and everything on the network works fine, I can share, I can acess the internet.

The only problems I am having is now I can't use Outlook 2002 to check my POP email.

I have all outgoing traffic allowed in the Router Rules section.

The error I get when trying to check my mail is

Task 'Sav Neo3 Media - Sending and Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC0F) : 'The connection to the server was interrupted. If this problem continues, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).'

I can access it when I unplug my router and plug right into my modem, so I know its something with the router. Anyone know of anyway to get around this? Is there another rule I have to set or something?

Also, I can't get onto my AOL Account via TCP/IP. It says "Host Timed Out"

Any suggestions on either of these probelms would be great. Thanks

Does it have a built in firewall? You may need open the ports for each. I know AOL uses 5150, however I'm not sure on outlook.

EDIT: I re-read your post and see that it does have a built in firewall, so I'd say that it most likely your problem. Also, if there is an option to run some computers in DMZ Mode (Firewall disabled) you may want to do that as it would be easier than opening each and every port for every program seeing as some use like 15 ports.

What has a firewall? The router? Yes it does (Netgear Prosafe Firewall)

I am not running a software firewall any other ideas?

I am still getting the error from Outlook after Enabling the DMZ Server. Any other ideas?

My first suggestion would be to dump Outlook and AOL. ;)
Second suggestion is to try to configure Outlook to use a proxy server with the IP of the router.

How can I setup a proxy via outlook? I have never done it before.

Sorry about that. I double checked and Outlook doesn't have a proxy option. I must have been thinking about another mail program I used.

I spent all day yesterday running Cat5 and getting my Linux box added to my home network. I'm using a D-Link DI-614+ wireless router and haven't had any issues (yet) with email clients.

As was suggested, It does sound like a firewall/port problem. However, since you tried it with that computer in the DMZ, it's got me baffled.

Have you tried updating the firmware for the router? I had to do that with a new Netgear router I got (the VPN+ProSafe 8-port one). It wouldn't hold a TCP connection for very long. Upgraded the firmware and now it works like a dream.

Edit: Yep, I meant firmware. I'm tired...

You mean Firmware? I have done so and still.....Nothing. I am using Pocomail and I get the error message "Connection Refused"

Also, I can't ping any sites but I can access them via a web browser.

Apparently, Zone Alarm thinks that it should engage the internet lock even when its shut off and not running...LOL :) When I run Zone Alarm, it pops-up the notification message and its all good now :)
