Hello all,

I am planning to start a hosting business (as some may already know) and i was wondering if anyone knows of a company that offers cheap co-locating. All i need is about 3-4 GB of bandwidth per month - and the max. amount i can afford is $20 (per month).

Thanks,

Shawn

nishansoft, first I'd like to say if you are looking for 3-4gig of bandwidth and under $20/month colocation is certainly not for you. If thats all that you plan on using a simple reseller account would do the job.

As for an actually colocater good luck finding anything less then $50/month at the minimum, one dirt cheap colocator I can show is MTSN (http://www.mtsn.org), they are really cheap ($60/month).

Good luck finding a colocator :)

Thanks Foo-dawg for replying :)

Yeh, reselling is another option i was looking into for my hosting business. I am so web hosting illiterate, i had no idea about co-locating plans/pricing!
I figured what i am going to do now - i guess i'll first start out as a reseller :)
Is http://venturesonline.com a very cheap reseller? If not, can anyone send me a link to a cheap company that i can resell from?

Thanks again,

Shawn

VenturesOnline is pretty cheap, also some other resellers I'd reccomend are HOSTkaki (http://www.hostkaki) and DataPhorce (http://www.dataphorce.com). I've used DataPhorce's reseller control panel and it's suberp.

And just so you know, Colo means you are sending someone a server to host in their data center for you.

you're not gonna get anywhere with 3-4GB's per month if you're serious about starting a webhosting business. and for $20/month you might want to compare a few reseller plans.

Hi nishansoft,

If you already have clients lined up for your webhosting, then reselling is a good way to go. As a reseller, you will simply need to make sure that your clients make their payment before the due date of your webhost comes up. If you follow this method, your clients will basically pay for their own accounts, you will keep whatever mark-up you can, and whatever is left is sent to your webhost.

If you do not have clients lined up, you may want to try a referral program to get your started. As long as the referral program offers monthly commissions, it may sometimes even be an easier alternative, since all overhead is cut away from you (remains responsibility of webhost) such as customer support, billing, etc...

You can always contact the webhost that you have in mind and lay out your ideas, and the webhost may suggest the most cost-effective program you may want to follow.

Woody> Ok, thanks - i'll check out that site; Even tho i have decided to start out reselling :)

Foo-Dawg> Thanks for the suggestions on reseller companies :) I have checked out Hostkaki, and VO so far, but i haven't seen DataPhorces yet - thanks!

CWIhosting> Where in the world did you think i don't know what Colo means? OF COURSE i know what it means LOL!! :finger:

JTW> Nope, that's way over my budget - but thanks anyway.

atiep> Thanks for the refer - man, that's cheap!

WeinBar> Hmmm, you are starting a hosting company and can only afford $20/mo???? Must have a nice business plan!
Well, that's not exactly what i can afford each month, it's kinda an over all guess, and it's just to see how much i can get with $20. Actually, i don't have a "business plan" set out yet.

Kiwi> Yeh, thanks for the tip, i have decided to start out reselling :)

SmartHosting> Thanks for the tips :) I appreciate it! I think that's a very good idea what you mentioned; I'll remember what you said, thanks again man.

1 Suggestion since you admit to not knowing much on the server side would be to start out reselling. VO, Weinbar, and several other companies offer decent reseller accts, with good packages and good support. VO is in the process of moving their servers to Verio to improve their service, and Weinbar just added more techs. I'm not familiar with many of the others out there enough to comment on them.

I'd personally recomend going the reseller route while you learn the ins and outs of server maint. While the various controlpanels make it easier, I still think you need a basic understanding, maybe more to really do it right. We've got 2 certified techs on staff and are only now looking into colo/dedicated.

And definately spec out a rough biz plan. Do your research on the market and your competition. You'll last longer. Read alot of posts here on the various companies. You'll save yourself alot of hurt by avoiding the most obvious problem companies.

Good Luck

Since you have decided on reselling... within the UK vibus.net and donhost are the two top dogs in my book for all round performance.
