Hello,
I run a website which does around 4-5gb/day and we are looking for a place to co locate a server. What I want to ask is if anyone has used maxim.net and what are their impressions with them? Good support? Good uptime? Also, does anyone know a place to co locate which is good, has good support, a good NOC and quite cheap. Another question about maxim.net, I dont understand their bandwidth payment, so I will give a scenario to explain it:
My website uses around 150gb of bandwidth per month, and we use an average of 700Kbit/sec. But we sometimes peak to 1.9mbit/sec, but we still use only around 150gb/month. If we sign up with maxim for a 1.5mbit connection, can we still peak to 1.9mbit and not pay for so much cause we use only a third of the bandwidth per month really?
And can anyone please tell me if I should go dedicated or colocated with a server that needs to be around PIII 866 (Maybe Dual) 18gb scsi and 1gb of ram.

hey Itay looooong time no see
it's singloon from geekvillage :wavey:
still having growing server pains i see
my sites are using 100 - 120GB/month and are very comfortable on my dedicated server - Dual P3 866, 768mb ram and 18GB SCSI hdd :D
going dual cpus is great and my sites and vbulletin forum run well
i think you should go dedicated unless you can afford to purchase a dual cpu server for colocation.

We seem to meet whereever we go :)
"All roads lead to rome" :)
Anyhow, where do you have your dedicated server running, sounds like a good deal you have there.
We got an offer to buy a:
Dual 733
29.1GB SCSI
36.4GB SCSI
60GB IDE hard drive
Dual Intel Pro NICs
Adaptec SCSI card
1 gig of ram
for 1750$ in a 2U case, so thats good offer.
I am less worried about one time charges such as buying a server cause 1 time charges are easy to handle, its the monthly charges that get me worried.
Our bandwidth can easily double a term of just one month which is something I am worried about.
As I see it dedicated gives me:
Better support
Knowing that the server is handled by experienced people
and some more stuff I dont remember now :)
While Co Location gives me:
Owning my own server
not needing to start from scratch if I move to a different host with my server
Usually its cheaper in the long run
So you see my dillemas?

wow that's a great price on that server comes with any warranty ? have to ask yourself what happens if i colocate and a server component breaks ?
i'm also looking at colocating for my 2nd server with my current web host www.venturesonline.com (which is where i have the dual p3 866, 768mb server from) but my 2nd server is only going to be a dedicated mysql database server which doesn't need any bandwidth, all i need is the money :bawling:
in this time of advertising slump long term savings is good i suppose .. hard to say but maybe holding off for intel price cuts so you can get a better deal on a server purchase :emlaugh:
btw, where you're getting that server from ?
Also look into mod_gzip to reduce bandwidth http://www.i4net.tv/marticle/get.php?action=getarticle&articleid=12
i cut my bandwidth by 35 - 50% with this installed :D

Someone I know is going bankrupt and are selling their servers. I know its a bit risky but they are both servers that worked.
About the "breaking piece" part, I agree... Its a risk, but lets say you're current dedicated host dies, what do you do? You need to set up everything from scratch somewhere else, which is hours upon hours of work, its something to consider as well. They both have their pluses and minuses, but longterm is a good thing. Regarding waiting a few months, if I wait for something itll be the new AMD chipset which allows dual Athlons... NOW THAT ROCKS =)
Their uptime is really great and they are very friendly as well. Their support can be quite slow though but on the other hand they can surprise as well.
A few weeks ago my server had been down for 30 minutes (I didn't notice it) and they called me up (I live in Denmark) and asked me whether I was doing anything with the server and if not if he could take a look at it. 5 minutes later the server was running again :)

If you sign-up with maxim for a 1.5 mbps connection then you can use 1.5 mbps max.
Your line is capped, you can not burst over 1.5 mbps.
