P2P is NOT illegal.
However if you download files/data that you have no license etc for.... that is illegal
PurpleCow 02-07-2003, 07:58 AM Okay, any idea whats the user base for Direct Connect ... any geographical beak up would be helpful for me ?!
Thanks again

:: paVel :: 02-07-2003, 08:39 AM I heard www.kazaa.com is pretty good...
Kazaa has spyware, use kazaa lite

Kazaa has spyware, use kazaa lite
Where can you get it from?
skylab 02-07-2003, 09:03 AM get kazaa lite at www.k-lite.tk. there should be no other choice. a new minor update was released yesterday and it's absolutely astounding. no spyware, super fast, a ton of extra options, and above all, it looks great.
www.slsk.org is also very good but moving their server, so wait a week or so.

Thanx :D
UH-Matt 02-07-2003, 09:17 AM Direct connect is good for serious downloading. Its not kazaa or the others - if you can share 50gb+ and have a fast connection then Direct Connect is the ONLY good one for you :)
TheDoctor 02-07-2003, 09:18 AM How does Kazza Lite compare with Grokster. I have used Kazza in the past and find Grokster whilst on the same network was better for "Resuming" and seemed better for getting files from multiple users simultaniously.
Doc
web docta 02-07-2003, 10:11 AM Kazaalite is excellent but it DOES have spyware contrary to what everyone thinks. Make sure to use AdAware to rid you machine of spyware.
Another choice would be Sharezaa (http://www.shareaza.com/) not nearly as good but spyware free!
skylab 02-07-2003, 10:35 AM Do tell more about KLite having spyware, please.
I've checked clean installs with Ad-Aware and SpyBot S+D and never found a thing. Perhaps you downloaded it from another website?
Or perhaps you are confused because older Ad Aware scans would pull a false positive on the "dummy" Cydoor that Kazaa Lite installs? (Newer updates of Ad Aware no longer pull this false positive)
Read through the FAQ @ www.k-lite.tk and they have a section on spyware.

Read This (http://www.spywareinfo.com/articles/p2p/)
I agree though...Kazaa lite is still the best p2p out there.
skylab 02-07-2003, 10:45 AM There are two programs, Kazaalite and Groksterlite, which you may be wondering about. Both programs are spyware-free versions of those file-swappers.
Re-read that page, under "cracks". Other than a three paragraph blurb ribbing the users of "cracked" programs, they nowhere state that Kazaa Lite has spyware. It in fact specifically states that the spyware has been removed from Kazaa Lite.
But, yeah, it being a cracked software is a whole other subject in itself.
PurpleCow 02-07-2003, 11:17 AM Ooops...I downloaded Kaaza Lite from this site www.kazaalite.nl/...is it the same as the one i get from the site k-lite.tk ???
Thanks
skylab 02-07-2003, 11:24 AM I believe there are several "official" Kazaa Lite pages and I think that is one of them. It's all fairly confusing really, but, yeah, I think that's the official Dutch site.
Coach 02-07-2003, 11:35 AM The official one I believe is http://kazaalite.com and you can go to their forums are http://forums.kazaalite.com
Just get a pop-up blocker before you go to the official kazaalite.com site.

Not yet, they sued Verizon (said user's ISP) and Verizon was forced to reveal customer information. RIAA won and Verizon is appealing. If Verizon loses, this means that your ISP may be held liable for your actions and you could be blacklisted from ISPs (yes it's possible)

b.m.2 02-07-2003, 11:57 PM I have used A LOT of P2P programs. All of the major ones.
I think Limewire is the best.
you can check it out at limewire.com.
PurpleCow 02-08-2003, 12:00 AM limewire has less userbase and also it comes bundled with all that scum/spy/annoy ware....
Intially when they launched the app, it was free of all that spyware...but later they started bundling it. i suggest you stop using limewire.
Good luck
fechizze 02-08-2003, 10:19 AM The p2p that really pops out would be dc++
It's an opensource version of Direct Connect. (Written in C++) It has the largest userbase I have ever seen. It usses the same protocol as DC, but you can connect to serveral hubs at a time, multi-hub search, and it has many other advantages over the original.
As it is opensource you can be sure that it is spy-,scum- & crapware free ;)
It's not as easy to use as kazaa, but i think this is a good thing as most clueless users stay away.
As you can see from this (http://dcplusplus.sourceforge.net/forum/) forum it is a very active project.
Here's the official site: http://dcplusplus.sourceforge.net/
skylab 02-08-2003, 11:06 AM I like DC++ very much, the only trouble is if you can't share 20gb+ then you're really left out in the cold most of the time. Just from my own experience.
But definitely a great software to use if you're a pro P2P person and have a ton of things to share.
richy 02-08-2003, 11:13 AM go to the shop and buy it you theavin little ...
John D 02-08-2003, 04:42 PM Go on www.filetopia.com
I think thats easily the best p2p program out,
the chat is very good but there arent that many users on it.
There is 8TB (8000GB) shared on there at the minute and 3400 users.
Its quite simple to use and has some very good features.
I think you will like it :)
Its not like you will be looking to download illegal files anyway ;)
Hope that helps,
John
John D 02-08-2003, 04:56 PM Oh yeah another thing...
Filetopia encrpyts transfers so your IP is a lot safer than any other p2p program ;)
Rewdog 02-08-2003, 05:38 PM www.shareaza.com
www.zeropaid.com
I like direct-connect .
