View Full Version : question about nameserver IP's

This evening, a customer asked me if the server was down. I checked everything on my end and all was ok. I restarted my services, but was still getting a dns error when trying to access his page.

I then ran a whois on the customers domain name and one of the IP for the nameservers (ns1) was different. What was once 209.xxx.xxx.xx was now 206.xxx.xxx.xx

I made no modifications anywhere. I ran whois for several other domains and a few of them reflected the correct IP and a the others the wrong IP.

Does anyone know how this could have happened?

Is this something that was mis-reported by DV2?

It was fine a day or 2 ago and now this sudden change which I did not do.

If anyone can explain to me, I would appreciate it as this one was a new one on me.

I manually changed the IP for the nameserver at godaddy and I notified DV2. I just figured to post something here to see if I can get a few answers a little quicker.

Thanks in Advance,

Robert

Ask him if he renumbered the nameservers IP at his domain registrar, as far as I know, that is the only way to change the nameservers IPs.

I even called godaddy where I originally registered the nameservers before I started buying bulk domains. I was paranoid and started thinking that maybe someone went into the account and performed the change.

When I spoke to a tech there, the only record of a change to that domain was my previous edit to put the IP back to what it was supposed to be. No other edits prior to that since I originally entered the records. I showed him a dns report so he could understand what I was talking about, then, I asked how in the world this could have happened. He had no idea or suggestions as to how this could have happened.

I was wondering if by chance, maybe DV2 could have broadcast an IP change as they have performed a few upgrades and it really looked like a typo that just started to propagate. The number 6 is just below the number 9 on the keypad and could easily have been mistyped somehow.

I don't know, I just can't seem to figure out how all of a sudden this could have happened especially since I haven't even been to my godaddy account for over 2 months since I have been using bulk domain service with another registrar.

Thanks for the input, and of course, More would be Appreciated,

Robert
