The photograph was taken through a viewfinder that uses a combination of moving images taken behind the wearer to give a transparent effect.

So technically it's real?

I dont know if it is real or not. It was on a news headline. I don't know how reliable to source is though.

It's not real, it's an illusion. A good one though, you won't see David Blane doing that :D

real enough for me :P...

speaking of David Blane..

I saw him once at Atlantic City on the streets. He did a nifty little trick with a deck of "regular" cards. I pulled out my "regular" deck, did the same trick blindfolded and got a nice little thank you for Mr. Blane...anywho...that's my story and i'm stickin to it :D

Well hey...you go to atlantic city you're bound to "play" cards...

Actually, no I used to do amateur magic shows for Special Education students and there was a convention in AC, which is why i had a pocketfull of spongeballs and cards and "poof powder"

That is really cool that you got to meet David Blaine, I really respect his work

just a reflective mirror and nothing more.

you can't see parts of the man (on his bicycle) that the supposed camouflaged lady is blocking.

for the fact of a picture it could be photoshopped...

or you could go invisible on a green screen...

It could be real. I saw a show where the US military was experimenting with the same concept. Small cameras in back transmit images to small screens in front. The perfect camouflage.

It is physically impossible for somebody to be invisible and still see because for them to see light has to interact with them, and for light to interact with them they will become visible.

Don't be spilling any of that "poof powder" on me.

However, what I have seen him do on video was quite unremarkable.
One thing that disgusted me is how he doctored the video where he levitates. There was something to see, indeed, but NOT what you see on video. Doing that was lame...

blaines a tart but as regards the story, did you read it? its not really about invisibility, its regarding transposing images for remote operator applications as mentioned ,specifically surgical applications.

naw its real, its not photoshoped :D atleast thats what the news claims..

I dont think alot of people really read the article. It clearly says the image is taken from behind the person and relayed to the viewfinder that produces the image. Its like half an invisable cloak.

The tecnique seems logical. Use cameras to relay images on the fabric, thereby making the fabric a kind of movie screen. It has to be done in real time to work of course, but that's just a matter of computer power and such.

I've been playing with the idea of bending light around an object. don't know if the object inside would be able to "see" out, but this could be solved with tiny cameras placed around the object where the light is being bent. The tiny cameras of today are so small they would hardly be noticed.

David Blaine? What a hack. Of course he's turned dimestore magic tricks into million dollar paydays, so that much I respect. His magic, however, commands no respect at all...

It was in the newspaper here today - it immediately caught my eye :)

The theory seems plausable. If it's real, it'll be interesting to see what becomes of it.

they talked about doing this about 4 years ago, only they are suppposed to use fiber optics to relay the images.

Did anyone see http://www.star.t.u-tokyo.ac.jp/projects/MEDIA/xv/images/oc-s.mpg ? That's impossible - you can't put a ball in front of your head and have it suddenly show things behind you.

I'm guessing that in both cases the person is standing in front of a blue/green screen. It's not difficult to do - I've done it before. The colour of the coat makes my explanation seem even more plausable.

We done a similar thing a few years ago in a studio with the family - the only thing is on that day I was wearing a blue/green shirt which the effects system didn't like. It looked as though we were walking around a desert except I was translucent - in fact I looked very similar to that person in the coat; you could see the background (ie: desert footage) through me but the shimmer of the shirt was still there.

This is one thing I'll have to see to believe and I don't believe it.

im with you on the green screen

flitcher

It is "possible". I saw a documentary on modern and future warfare, and they showed suits and tanks that were "invisible". Basically, from what I can remember, the person/vehicle is covered in small glass objects that take in and project the images that they capture. I can't remember exactly how it's done, but basically the backside of the person/vehicle is projected on the frontside of the person/vehicle.

I will try and fine some documentation to backup my claim.

shaunewing

Yes, the coat thing seems a possibility - but did you see the ball?

How can a ball see right through you to broadcast the image in the first place when the entire thing was in front of his head?

shaunewing:

Yes, I saw the ball. It is completely possible as shown. Did you not read the description and examine the diagram? Clearly this can be done as they are showing it being done.
