View Full Version : Good email program?!
(SH)Saeed 05-18-2001, 10:42 AM Hi,
I was wondering what email program you're using to check your POP3 email account. I need a good one that also allows me to backup my email so I can restore after formats etc. Or atleast save them in a directory like Netscape's email program, this way I copy it to another folder as backup every few weeks.
Thanks.
AtlantaWebhost.com 05-18-2001, 11:08 AM I use Microsoft Outlook 2000 and like it a lot. You can backup the e-mail to PST files which can be opened and/or imported on any computer using Outlook. You may also want to look at Eudora. I have not used it much, but it has a good reputation and I am pretty sure it will have a backup mechanism.
Best regards,
Frank Rietta
MikeM 05-18-2001, 11:34 AM I use EudoraPro. excellent program... very few problems with it.
allows for multiple pop accounts. Has Some excellent feature's ....
(SH)Saeed 05-18-2001, 03:25 PM AtlantaWebhost.com,
I don't know if you read computer news sites or if you have heard about all the security issues with Explorer!? There is no way I'm going to run Microsoft Outlook!! Thanks for your reply though.
MikeM,
I was thinking about installing it, do you know if it has backup/restore features?
cbaker17 05-18-2001, 03:29 PM We use eudora pro as well, its by far in my opinion the best email program out there.
Annette 05-18-2001, 03:40 PM Security issues with IE have to do with Outlook in what way?
I use Outlook2K now, and have used various versions of Outlook for years now with no issues. The .PST is easy to manipulate in the event I switch computers, need to back up anything, or just want to archive a bunch of mail. People worry about things unnecessarily. If you manage your options properly, you have nothing to fear.
I have also used Forte Agent from time to time, when I was reading newsgroups a lot more than I am now. It also has a mail function, although at the time it could not handle multiple account POPping. I'm not sure if that has changed.
AtlantaWebhost.com 05-18-2001, 03:42 PM Granted there are security risks, but most are not a problem until human error is introduced. Outlook does not automatically open attached files, you have to choose them. One time I received one of the "mail viruses," but I did not open the attachment so it did not do anything.
Best regards,
Frank Rietta
akashik 05-18-2001, 04:10 PM agreed.
I've been using Outlook Express for years without mishap. In that time I've seen three viruses come to my computer and zero infections. I just make sure to check attachments carefully, and never open files with 'odd' extensions or .exe files of any kind. I also have Norton checking every e-mail that gets downloaded too and keep the virus definitions updated.

Kaith Sutai-Rustaz 05-18-2001, 04:39 PM I used Eudora for years, nary a problem until I updated to version 5. Then all hell broke loose. It would randomly crash my system, freeze things up, etc. I finally started going thru the logs and it was always the same error. Contacted their support folks....waited, contacted them again, got a criptic "Its not our program, its mcafee" (my anti virus software). Now, I could understand that IF! it was the AVS that was a-new and b-crashing, but even removing it from my system didnt help. After going back and forth with the shmucks running Eudoras support, I said the hell with it and switched to outlook Exp. Do I like OE? No. Is it open to various worm/virii attacks? yes. Am I happy? nope. BUT! it has yet to crash on me.
Of course, All I need is a Linux equivilent for OE, Agent, Dreamweaver and Lightwave and Winblows is outta here for me. :)
If you run Eudora on a system running Mcafee AVS, be warned, ya may have problems. If they would fix the damn bugs I'd switch back, but I'll never spend anymore cash on it.
Peace.
Mike the newbie 05-18-2001, 05:18 PM I use Calypso (www.calypsoemail.com) as my main email client. After using MS OUtlook for a couple of years I switched to Calypso. I like it because it is more robust that MS Outlook or Outlook Express, and it handles multiple accounts very well. It stores all your emails in a single encrypted file that can be password-protected if you like.
You can also set a flag so that HTML emails are not rendered without your explicit OK, thus moving past one of the major security flaws of the Outlook email clients.
There's a 30-day trial of a full-featured version.

Jason Ellis 05-18-2001, 06:02 PM I'll put in my vote for The Bat! (www.ritlabs.com). It is probably the best e-mail program I've ever found, and has features that none of the others can even touch.
I used to use Eudora, but had to stop when I got to about 10,000 messages and Eudora started crashing 4 to 5 times a day because of it. Since moving to TB I've currently got 19,119 e-mails (and yes, TB tells me that at a glance) and it's never crashed yet.
It has some fantastic features that I couldn't live without, the filtering system is so much more powerful than Eudora's it's not even funny. And the ability to set a separate sound for each mail folder (so that, for example, when I get an e-mail for sales I get a different noise than when I get an e-mail from my mailing list subscriptions) has been indispensable.
I highly recommend it - once you've tried The Bat!, you probably won't look back.

P.S. - I make no money off this program, I'm just an extraordinarily thrilled user.

I ment outlook. Using that program you have to be extra carefull what emails you look at and which ones you don't look at. I have used it for a couple if years before and I was happy with it, nothing wrong with it except that Microsoft has to bring all their fancy stuff (always filled with bugs) into that program.
Anyways, to the users using Eudora.. How do you move the "who", "date" "subject" in the email list? I want them to come in other order.

I'll probably download for an evaluation myself.
But I do want to point out in response to the above that Eudora has that ability, too: you set the sound to the filter that places the message in the folder, not to the folder itself, but the effect is the same. I depend on it.
My biggest dislike about Eudora is the navigation. I got used to Agent, which Annette mentioned earlier, and like that simply clicking on a folder refreshes the view to show what's in that folder. In Eudora, you have to actually open the folder into a window which seems complicated and non-intuitive to me -- though that may be because I got used to something else. My biggest complaints about Agent were that you can't have subfolders, and that it does not -- as Annette mentioned -- support multiple accounts. That hasn't changed as far as I know, there may be one newer version than what I have. And none of that aforementioned sound support.
Outlook? Too big, too slow, too ugly.
(SH)Saeed 05-18-2001, 08:48 PM The double clicking and opening in a new window pissed me off with Eudora. I just installed The Bat! and imported all my emails. This program seems to be really cool. I love it so far!
One little thing though, I've set the perfect size and order for the subject, from, to, date, etc columns in the email list. How do I make my setting apply to all folders? Cause I have about 20 folders and please don't tell me I actually have to do this one by one!!???

I have no idea how to do this, but I'm sure it can be done. One nice thing about The Bat is they have a very good user-to-user mailing list - subscribe to that and ask the question, and you'll probably get 10 people who have an answer within an hour :-)

Humm Jason..have you ever used Calypso?
Just wondered if you had used Calypso bfor and how the two compared? I may give Bat a try..:D
I use Calypso now, most of the time.
Timothy 05-19-2001, 05:03 PM I've always used Outlook (98 & then 2000) and I'ver been fairly happy with it, but I think I'm going to try this Calypso and see how I like it. It looks a little better, IMO.
I'll try to remember to post and let everyone know how I think it compares.

I know Calypso is a good email client and it offers tons of features. Free for 30 days and purchase price is only like 30 bucks? Let me know if ya like it :D
(SH)Saeed 05-19-2001, 06:04 PM You people should try The Bat... I installed it yesterday and so far it's the best email program I've ever used.
atiep 05-19-2001, 06:20 PM :stickout eudora pro rules !!! :D
The Bat! (www.ritlabs.com) is the best!!!!!
30-day trial available!
sodapopinski 05-22-2001, 01:10 AM I heard that the bat! is good.
But so far, I really like Netscape Mail :D
Aloha I know this is an older thread but Eudora is a resource hog and a half a bloated pig when ya have a few emails in it
I am amzed at anybody using it
just my thoughts
;)
(SH)Saeed 05-22-2001, 10:55 AM I installed Eudora first, but did not like it at all. There are many reasons for this. For example, you have do double click to open a new folder. Everything opens in a new window.
I've been running The Bat! now for a week and it is by far the best email program I have ever used. I recommend you all atleast give it a try.
