View Full Version : Need host to host many domains (unique IP's)
Cyphix 02-05-2003, 05:05 PM Hello,
I'm in need of a host to host a lot of domains, I buy & sell domains so I'm starting to get together more & more domains all the time.
Most of the domains will be undeveloped so I will not need much space or bandwidth, I prefer a host with a a cheap yearly fee.
All I want to do with most domains is have a unique IP for them & either track all domains with one stats program if possible or setup something like webalizer to track stats for each domain.
A control panel would be a good feature to have but is not needed if they have good support who take no longer than a day to reply.
Thanks.
thedavid 02-05-2003, 06:01 PM Just curious, for these purposes why do you need unique IP addresses for each site? Stats can be broken up by virtual host, so you don't need so many IP addresses - 1 would be enough.

WPT Kyle 02-05-2003, 06:03 PM I suggest you post this in the requests forum, you will get many good offers
Cyphix 02-05-2003, 07:46 PM thedavid: Because I want to make sure people reach the site by going to either domain.com or www.domain.com.
Akash 02-05-2003, 07:49 PM Cyphix: That's still possible without needing a dedicated IP for each domain.
YUPAPA 02-05-2003, 07:49 PM HiHi~
I am currently hosting many clients and all domains are pointed to the same IP with webalizer running nightly to produce statistics for each domain and subdomain. You don't really need 1 ip for each domain... that is a waste in my opinion. PLUS you will have to pay more $$ for ips :stickout:
GoOdBye~ :penguin:
Huminie 02-05-2003, 07:56 PM Agree with everyone else here...you don't need unique IPs. I personally have an account that allows me unlimited domain names so I know it can be done.
Cyphix 02-06-2003, 12:40 PM Oh... well whats the point of having an IP for each domain then? There are no benifets at all?

Benefits of having a static IP address are:
Anonymous FTP
SSL Certificates
Those are the main benefits. Others would include being able to bring up the site by just typing the IP in the browser. There are a few others, but that's the majority of them.

Who'd want to do that when you can use a domain?? Isn't that why domains were created in the first place?? ;)
Really, the only reasons are SSL certs, and anonymous FTP. a vast majordity of all websites do not need a dedicated IP
thedavid 02-06-2003, 01:18 PM LOL - I was really reaching there for other possible reasons - you caught me :)

Huminie 02-06-2003, 01:25 PM For more critical applications, reaching a site by IP could be needed in the event that DNS breaks. (DNS doesn't ever break, does it? LOL)
The scenario above does not sound 'critical" to me though.
Cyphix 02-06-2003, 01:33 PM Ok, so, who's got hosting suggestions?
I'd rather suggestions than offers as hosts will offer whether their hosting sucks or not.
Akash 02-06-2003, 01:36 PM VenturesOnline.com
Hostyard.com
hostculture.com
voxtreme.com (reseller accts only now)
I've used all the above and would have to say that i was satisfied.

If DNS breaks, 98% of your visitors won't be visiting anyhow. No one I know memorizes IPs for websites. I myself only know a few, not counting the sites I host, including google, samspade, bbc, ars, wc3, and a few others.
Its sort of moot at that point.
