One of my customers has a blacklisted IP. The offense was that he was attacked by a virus that spammed email ads all over the net, and hence the blacklisting of his IP. I went to spamcop and did a look up on his IP and it listed the offenses. In order to help him of course, I offered that I would try and figure out how to unblacklist his name. Is this possible?

Yes, it's possible to do - what you'll have to do is contact the blacklist owner and see the process for removing your blocked IP. Depending on the blacklist, you may have to submit a request on their webpage or post to the net abuse newsgroups and the like. It all depends. Can you tell us what blacklist it is that you're on?

If you get blacklisted with services like spamcop, good luck! Getting listed is the easy part but getting off the list is impossible. The whole idea of running a spam database like this is a joke.

Untrue, especially in the case of spamcop. Spamcop listings expire on their own, with no intervention necessary except that the spam complaints for that IP cease, something quite clearly (http://spamcop.net/fom-serve/cache/298.html) outlined in the FAQ. Other lists might take more effort, but it is always possible for people to be removed from lists unless they're teamed with such a nasty spamhaus that no one wants to deal with them.

We've had an IP permanently blacklisted because we dared ask the owner how it got there and what to do to get it off.
I'll check out of this thread now because this is a very hot issue with me.

turns out it was just a time issue. his blacklisting expired I suppose. He isn't having any trouble with it now, it just made him unable to email out to people. He could still receive email, just not send out. Thanks for all of your help guys, your input was extremely valuable to me.
