View Full Version : Name Servers and WHM
I just got my dedicated running WebHostManager and i cannot get the name servers to work. The hostname has been registered with my registrar.
However i am confused with how to get the name server working on the server. Everything seems to be seutp but i am sure i missed a step. What steps do i take to get my name servers working and this server making me money?
Also... What's with the poor documentation for WHM?
Thanks,
Joe
Annette 05-17-2001, 04:05 PM What we did:
Under DNS functions, add a DNS zone for each nameserver, with an IP that is unused by anything else. Go into the IP list and reserve those two IPs so that nothing else will use them. Register those nameservers at whatever registrar was used to register the domain. Done.
The documentation for both WHM and cPanel is pretty pathetic^H^H^H scarce. :)
We're writing our own.
Jedito 05-17-2001, 06:33 PM How do I to set up new nameservers for a dedicated server using the WHM?
1) Under Server Setup, click on Edit Setup. Scroll down to Primary Nameserver and enter ns1.yourdomain.com. In the Secondary Nameserver box enter ns2.yourdomain.com (replace with your real domain name). Click Save at the bottom.
2) Under IP Functions click on Show IP Address Usage. Skip the first IP listed, and select any 2 others to use for your nameservers. These IP's can be used for websites, but cannot be shared with other nameservers you may set up later.
3) If you have not yet added an account for your domain, then under Account Functions, click on Add a New Account and create your account.
4) Under DNS Functions, click Edit a DNS Zone. Select your domain and click edit.
To the right of the SOA, enter your new primary nameserver in both text boxes. They should look like "ns1.domain.com." and then "root.ns1.domain.com.". Make sure you have the trailing (ending) dots!
Look for NS under the heading of "Record Type". There will be 2 lines with nameserver names on them (such as ns.vosn.net and ns2.vosn.net). Replace these nameservers with your new primary and secondary nameservers.
Scroll down to the first line past Add New Entries Below this Line. In the first box enter "ns1" (without the quotes), leave the "14400" and the "IN" as they are. In the next box enter the IP you will use for ns1, leave the last 2 boxes empty.
Repeat this procedure on the next line for ns2. Click on Save at the bottom.
5) Register your new nameservers with your registrar.
Ok I made all the changes to reflect what you had Jedito.
Restarted the DNS and it still does not work..
Should i reboot the entire server? Is there something i need to update/restart?
Thanks,
Joe
same problem also I made all the changes but I think this step will take some time to work 24 hours or more
I hope any one help us to fix this problem
Annette 05-18-2001, 06:09 PM Did you register your nameservers wherever you registered your domain? This is a required step.
Annette 05-18-2001, 07:29 PM Did you do it today? If so, you'll need to wait a bit. It's not an instantaneous process to have nameservers recognized anywhere, although some registrars make it seem that way.
Annette 05-18-2001, 11:47 PM OK, let's back up a sec. Have you had this box for a month? Or are you saying that you registered the nameservers a month ago? Or both?
registered the nameservers a month ago
Jedito 05-19-2001, 01:19 AM How do you register lo Nameserver without the Ips??

Definitely that's a problem. Your nameservers is still pointing to your old server. You should follow the instructions laid down by Jedito above.

For sure!!! you have to change the ip's of your nameserver wherever you register your domain.
I hope this solve your problem.

So??? you have to change the old IPS for the new IPS wherever you register your domain (Register.com, networksolutions I dunno where do you register it).
Sorry for my english, tell me if you understand me.
Regards
Jedito,
I will do the changes another time and I hope this fix the problem.

Annette 05-19-2001, 12:31 PM Your english is fine (both of you).
Any time you make a change (like to a new server at a different provider from the one you used previously), you must make certain updates at your registrar, especially regarding nameservers. Registrars will not know that you've made that change - they don't pick it up automatically. The plus side is that if you had already registered nameservers and their associated IPs, it's usually a very simple operation to update them at your registrar with the new IPs.
Okay I just got my hands wet on WHM/CPanel and the docs are terribly lacking in details. I've got a question to the experts Annette and Jedito. I've created a new account and assigned reseller privileges to this account but when I got to this account's CPanel, I cannot see the reseller features, i.e. add new account, etc. So where can I see it? Thanks.
Jedito 05-29-2001, 08:30 PM Mivo I send you a PM with the instructions.. I don't wanna write some things here. For security

Thanks Jedito for your PM. It solved the problem. I think there is a great need for WHM/CPanel users to create a forum.
Jedito 05-29-2001, 08:57 PM VDI have a forum I think, VO have one forum and weinbar too.
Domenico 05-30-2001, 03:23 AM So, what exactly did solve the problem ???
ok, so when you register your two nameservers (ns.domain.com and ns2.domain.com) which nameserver they use?
Or is it just a special option for official registrars and a different thing all together?
Ahem...

Domenico, I can't figure out your questions above but based on the discussions, if you change servers you need to also change the host record of your registrar to reflect the new IPs of your nameserver -- this is if you are using the old nameserver for the new machine. If your new machine have new nameservers, you need to reflect these new nameservers to your registrar.
Jedito, you've got PM from me.

They don't. They are just pointers off to a table somewhere. So if you have domain.com, for instance, and the nameservers are (for example)
ns.someplace.com 192.168.0.1
ns2.someplace.com 192.168.0.2
it simply tells the requesting system that information about domain.com can be found in the tables for those two nameservers, at either of those two IP addresses.
