View Full Version : Eryxma??
dlerium 02-04-2003, 02:57 PM What do you guys think of Eryxma (www.eryxma.com). They look quite damn good on paper, and even their private hosting is so cheap.
The fact that they even offer *** Complete is INSANE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I've only had my site for 4 months, but I remember lots of downtime. Its not like crashes or anything, they try to at least justify everything. My site was down for ~3 days or so when they migrated from the DC in Chicago to Atlanta, which was a major hassle. That was in November. I haven't been getting the greatest speeds either. After entering FTP info, it took me like 2 seconds before the FTP would even respond, and it wasn't too speedy.
Once again, they migrated their Atlanta DC to Dallas, with about 1 day of downtime only. What do you guys think of it?
jodyglidden 02-04-2003, 09:05 PM When they're up they're great. They were one of the only low priced people I could find that offered a recent php version, perl, unlimited mysql. They even offered the stats program I was looking for awstats and the forums I wanted (invision). But I too have experienced alot of downtime. In fact 2 days after I signed up, my site went down and when I posted about it on their forum trying to get support, they replied that they had already emailed me telling me it was going to go down a couple of days before and then closed the thread so I looked pretty stupid. This of course was not true since I wasn't even a member at the time of their announcement. They also used to be quite rude in their support replies but lately have been pretty nice to deal with and quick to resolve the frequent problems.
But, as of this posting, not only is my site down again. Who knows, only time will tell.
Patrick[EX] 02-04-2003, 10:55 PM As a representative of Eryxma I have seen that yes we have migrated a few times in the past.
First when we started with HS/Virtuozzo, we started slowly with using FDC servers, then to explain the downtime, it wasn't intentional, nor was it our fault, but the decision has, you can read here the 730 post thread:
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=83668
We moved to Atlanta, with a promise for such not to happen again, as it was connected to a diverse network. Then problems arose:
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=107235
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=107120
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=104537
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=97034
Again, such problems weren't intentional. We all want the best.
Then we decided to work with rackspace, or theplanet, after debating, we went with ThePlanet datacenter, which we are still finishing off to move there, we hope by today to finish it off. We colocated our dual 2.4 Ghz Xeons, 3 GB RAM, SCSI HD, these machines are not only better than before, but faster, and in a 100% SLA network.
jodyglidden , as far as that small interruption, we did experience a small inbound DOS attack from one of our VEs, it just affected 1 of our racks, we found who it was, and it has been destroyed, you can see with the graph there for how long that switch was affected. Only 1 out of 5 racks we have were affected.
The script did have some intresting aspects, when we investigated the VE:
/* FREAK88`s syn packet flooder */
/* WARNING THIS WILL MAX THE BANDWIDTH OF a t3 within secconds */
/* slightly borken to prevent everyones use! dont think i would just let ya have it do ya? */
/* *** juno`s long ass ip headers what the *** ya trying to kill cpu or bandwidth */
/* this is n0t 0day distribute as u wish */
/* ~FREAK88 putting the packet into kiddies! */
/* have fun packet k1dd1ez */
/* oh yea much props to mixter for writing the docs up on rawip */
/* Rooty's SYN Flooder -Aka."netflood"
* Rooty@netflood.net
* http://www.netflood.net
* "We Won't Waste Your Time."
* To compile: g++ -o netflood netflood.c
* Usage: ./netflood
*/
Now, if any further webhosts if this helps, this is the first time we had seen such, and well currently our partner company swsoft is taking care of adding filters to prevent such from repeating itself again, and adding it to our hardware firewall.
Again, I apologize for such, and if there is anything else you need, let me know.
I hope I explained myself ok.

bugle_boy 02-05-2003, 02:21 AM Did you close the thread on your forum about it, Eryxma? If so, why?
Patrick[EX] 02-05-2003, 02:31 AM I just work on tickets, I hardly look around the forums, we have 2 admins for that.
If you can give me the link for the thread that is closed, I can look up that information for you.
Thank you
jodyglidden 02-05-2003, 04:14 AM I do have to say that things have improved. I'd love to see you perhaps offer a higher tiered service for double the price with half or less of the accounts per server that way, innexperienced or malicious scripters would be more likely to take down someone elses server. Most of Eryxma I think is a very good deal, it's just the outages that bother me now.
2Grumpy 02-05-2003, 12:37 PM Ugh I keep reading those Global Compass threads and thinking "wtf Global Crossing used to kick butt" over and over and over again I just wanna smack myself and say "no idiot it says Global Compass".
Just had to share.
On topic though: I feel for Eryxma, we've had some problems with data centers ourselves, promises that weren't kept, bandwidth advertised that was far from the truth, and uptime guarantees that aren't.
Overall I've had my best running uptimes with DV2 and Rackshack of all the places I've used, Rackshack having a slightly better uptime than DV2 but Rackshack doesn't do colo so... DV2 wins. Yes they've had issues but in the long run (looking over the last year of uptime data) they still beat the pants off the other guys I've used, cept Rackshack, which wins by like .02%.
