View Full Version : Student finding decent host for school website - please help

Hi.

I'm trying to find a decent host for a new site I'm trying to put up for my high school. However, I'm getting conflicting opinions about how to host the site. Here are some of my constraints (excuse me while I vent):

1. Here in California, I'm not going to get much funding help (thanks Gray Davis), so I'd like to keep it below $20/mo.

2. It has advanced features, so it needs MySQL and PHP. (by the way, is there a huge advantage to having multiple MySQL databases rather than have all tables in one DB?)

3. The company has to be pretty reputable.

4. The service plan has to have at least a decent amount of server space and bandwidth.

I was going to go with LunarPages, but they don't support MySQL for the cheap plan. ****** doesn't seem to disclose much about their hosting plans, and VenturesOnline.com (my standing #1) seems expensive, but reliable.

Could you please give me some suggestions? It'd help to name a site or two, since I have no idea whether replies come from greedy hosts or gracious advisors.

Thanks in advance!

Browse down this board a little and pick out a few names you like the look of (based on the posts) then run a search on those names. There should be a enough here for you to make your mind without asking for opinion .. its all been asked before :D

Thanks...much appreciated. Still open to suggestions, though...i was kinda discouraged by the load of pure ads that covered the first page. --jeff

(ps to UH-Matt: Do you jump on everyone asking for opinions? If people like me didn't post these requests in the first place, how would browsing down the list help? Just wondering...it's all cool.)

VenturesOnline.com (my standing #1) seems expensive, but reliable.

Maybe email them and explain your situation - they might give you a discount.

Also as Matt suggested, post a request in the requests forum and then do a search on the responding hosts.

Other hosts that I'd recommend:
HostCulture.com (used - great service)
GetMeHosted.com (haven't used, but I trust them)
EffectOnline.com (trusted, haven't used)

Good luck  (don't worry, it's non-alcoholic :D)

Eh? What are you talking about Lunarpages does not support MySQL for the cheap plan? It comes with all plans. It is included in the price.

Must have been thinking of someone else...but still, LunarPages only supports one MySQL database.

For someone who's been here since Dec 2001, you'd think you might have at least visited the rules page once! You can't offer your services in here :o

Agreed. Offers much appreciated, but I was actually hoping for suggestions instead. I'm going to post in the Hosting Requested forum a bit later, if I don't get any decent suggestions, so please offer away when I post in there. Thanks! :)
