View Full Version : Bandwidth Usage

Hello everyone,

I have a question for the web hosting people and the technical gurus...

I have recently switched hosting to venturesonline mainly because I had exceeded the maximun allowable bandwitdh limitation on virtual hosting from my previous hosting company. Before I left my old hosting company, my bandwidth was over 10GB.

Now, I moved to venturesonline with 15GB bandwidth limit and curiously enough, even with roughly the same amount of page views (maybe even more), I am only using 6 or 7GB bandwidth last month from venturesonline

I have not changed any pages on my site when I moved so I can't understand why the bandwidth would be so much lower with the same amount of hits, page views, files accessed, etc.

My question is... do hosting companies compute bandwidth usage differently? I wouldn't go as far as to assume that I have been 'cheated' by my old hosting company... but was I? I am just curious to know what you guys think about this...

Opinions? Thanks.

easypooltutor,

It depends on how the bandwidth is monitored.

Some hosts monitor all possible bandwidth, example email, ftp, irc, http etc....

and some hosts just http,ftp

that can make some differences.

Don't take my word for it, but I have heard that the Cpanel does not calculate the bandwidth properly. I don't know if your hosting account with Venturesonline includes a Cpanel, but if it does, the total bandwidth that you see there is probably less than the actual bandwidth being utilized. ;)

CPanel counts only http traffic. And only that which is accessed through the main domain. subdomains are not accounted for I think.

To get a realistic picture, use a utility like bandmin

Bandwidth is total traffic. which means whatever hits that NIC card. Now some NOC will make special arrangements where they will only count your bandwidth usuage on http/ftp/mail etc to the server. But any NOC that charges for TOTAL bandwidth isn't cheating you. It depends on what they use to calculate your bandwidth. Remember bandwidth is traffic to a network/server etc.
