Hi there,

I received a pricing request for a video presentation in 28.8k, 56k, and cable/DSL format (10 minutes).

Problem is, I don't know a thing about video streaming!

Question time:

- What is required on the server side (in terms of setup, software, etc)?

- What are the pitfalls?

- Finally, what pricing model should one use?

Thanks,

Johan

Just to put my side on this, the church which i attend, paid $40,000 to recieve 1 live transmission 600k from Brunstad norway, whilst we are in Australia. So prices are quite heavy. Especially if its live.

We are not talking live streaming here, basically just the download of a video file from the server.

Maybe it is as simple as that - embed the file into the html, and the browser will do the rest?

There will obviously be bandwidth issues ...

Since it's not live streaming you don't really need the realserver software. Yes you can run it through http, it doesn't take up as much bandwidth as you think. We ran it for 3 hours live @ 600k and only used 1gig (amazing yes?).

So, are you going for streaming videos or downloads? Real | www.real.com | detects the browser speed and adjusts the stream accordingly if you use RealSystem Producer | http://www.realnetworks.com/products/producerplus/index.html?src=010513realhome,ra8smsk_040201 | But, my only complaint w/ RealPlayer is that it has choppy video, so you might want to look into Quicktime. Better to offer both as more ppl have RealPlayer, but Quicktime has a better quality/slower load. If you are going for a mac audience, deffinatly go for Quicktime as thats what macs have. Questions? PM/Email me

Note: I have been researching this stuff and will be getting into streaming soon, but I'm not yet. <== If that matters to you, get a life ;)

To answer you other questions, you should charge for the cost of software to you, plus the money to cover the time to learn/use the software.

Quicktime Pro=$30
RealSystem Producer Plus=$200

But basically it is html streaming, so you don't really need nothing server side. Pitfalls w/ stream, as I mentioned before, are dominated by BAD QUALITY, which is why I think you should have Quicktime as well!!

Hope this helps!! :)
