View Full Version : Inexpensive 17" CRT or 15" LCD monitors
El Nino 02-01-2003, 07:06 PM Hey everyone,
The monitor on my parent's computer just died and was wondering if anyone knew of some inexpensive 17" CRT or 15" LCD flat panel monitors. They don't need anything too special, just a reliable one that isn't going to break. Any ideas? Thanks.
Phrozen 02-01-2003, 08:18 PM I dunno where you live, but if there's an Office Max around your area they have a 17" Logisys flat screen CRT on sale for $129.
JWise 02-01-2003, 08:31 PM thats pretty nice but im not buying another monitor unless its an 17' LCD
giancarlo 02-01-2003, 10:02 PM I have a KDS Xtreme Flat Professional 17" CRT.
LCDs at this time suck... well for me they do... I don't have lack of space on my desk but the reason I hate them is because of ghosting in games and DVD movies.
Phrozen 02-01-2003, 10:17 PM Ghosting is pretty much a problem of the past. Most flat panels now have <=25ms response times now. Hitachi flat panels are at 16ms.
My only problem with them is price. Even a 15" still costs more than I paid for my entire computer.
giancarlo 02-01-2003, 10:57 PM CRTs are still better. If not for the quality, the price.
Centralized 02-01-2003, 11:01 PM 17" $55

Coach 02-02-2003, 05:04 PM $55 for a refurbished one though and it's not flat screen and it's a CRT. Plus, the shipping is going to be at least $35.
Wal-Mart is the cheapest I've seen them, unless you're wanting to pay alot up front and get rebates in two months from Best Buy or Comp USA or Circuit City.
Getting them on the Internet just offsets any savings because of shipping costs...
EDIT: Did find a few at Best Buy that have free shipping right now and $50 rebates with a price of $300 or below before rebate.

giancarlo 02-02-2003, 05:35 PM Best place to buy them are at Newegg.

KDS 17" XF-7T XFLAT Monitor Retail - $129
By the way the dot pitch is .20MM.. a very, very good rate.
The shipping doesn't get anymore than $30. Lets say to, umm... California the shipping is $22 via Fedex Express Saver.
I got my 17 inch CRT at compusa for $80...it was an Envision (generic)
Phrozen 02-02-2003, 06:26 PM No, no, no. Envision is far from generic. Generic is my old monitor which has no brand name at all to be found anywhere, no drivers other than the default Windows drivers, and no power button.
giancarlo 02-02-2003, 06:28 PM Just like my old Kleer K7... Kleer disappeared three months after I ordered that piece of junk. The monitor has one tube blown out so the screen appears red.
My dad has an Envision on his computer... a flat screen-faced CRT. It is actually pretty good.
Mester 02-02-2003, 09:54 PM Go for a cheap 17 or 19 CRT
There are soem great deals on refurbished 19 and 21 inchers on eBay.
web docta 02-02-2003, 10:05 PM I recently got a 17" flat MAG at Best Buy right after Thanksgiving for $69.00, I just installed a dual monitor setup. My other monitor is a Samsung 19" flat which I consider a piece of junk unfortunately. Don't buy a Samsung CRT!
I would strongly recommend the MAG or an Envision, both are inexpensive with excellent picture quality.

sonichost 02-03-2003, 12:24 AM My 17" Futura CRT went up in smoke Thursday night.
I drove 80 miles to a Wal-Mart and picked up a KDS 19" Xtreme Flat (XF-9b) It truely is a flat screen CRT and has a .20 (horizontal) dot pitch. ;) Not bad for $188.
Coach 02-03-2003, 12:30 AM Nope.. their KDS monitors aren't bad at all. $188 for a 19" and $118 for a 17" flat screen.
Can't beat that with a stick. I tried... I just ended up getting kicked out of the store and had my stick taken away from me.
Studio64 02-03-2003, 07:33 AM This (Samsung 1200NF) (http://www.newegg.com/app/Showimage.asp?image=24-001-037-01.jpg) was the last monitor I purchased. What can I say, I splurged.
I am so in love w/ it. Wonderful color, wonderful refresh rates, great resolution.
If I had my choice I'd get 4 of these (http://www.newegg.com/app/Showimage.asp?image=24-006-027-01.jpg) and set them up surround style. Eh... At $2 grand a pop that might be a little outta my league. But, wouldn't it be nice to have your working page on one screen; the phpMyAdmin database view in another; your code in another; WinAmp, AIM, etc in the 4th..... *droool*** :D
But, back to the posters original request NewEgg has 15in LCD's hovering around the $250+ range. Don't know the ms refresh specs on those (http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProduct.asp?catalog=20&DEPA=1&submit=property&mfrcode=0&propertycodevalue=3789) but, I'm guessing it might not be the greatest.
Rewdog 02-03-2003, 05:09 PM I just wanted to announce I just got a 15 inch CRT monitor for 15 bucks off of ebay (well add 15 bucks shipping). I'm happy with the steal :D
