View Full Version : Laptop Randomly reboots
WPT Kyle 02-01-2003, 06:09 PM Hey guys,
For about the last month my Dell Inspiron 7500 has been randomly rebooting, by that I mean all of a sudden it restarts out of the blue, it will do this 1-2 times a day, has this ever happened to anyone and if so is it fixable?
Thanks
theqase 02-01-2003, 07:24 PM i dont have a fix, as i have the same problem, only on a desktop... i hope you/we find an answer
rockergrrl 02-01-2003, 07:27 PM Sounds like you have a power supply problem... a short probably...
If its still under warranty, give Dell a call. They'll send you another one (or make you send your computer to them - depending on what your warranty is).
IGobyTerry 02-01-2003, 07:32 PM I've heard of some computers doing this when they're over heating. However, it usually happens when they're playing a game or some other CPU intensive program.
WPT Kyle 02-01-2003, 08:22 PM k thanks so far, it usually seems to happen when I look at flash, like on my own companies site hah, or if I attempt to play a game with flash

If its windows, It will restart and say "Windows has shut your computer down to avoid a serious problem" or something like that.
I would agree that its a power supply..
For the desktop, find a computer store that will refund your money 30 days, no questions asked. That way, if its not the problem then you don’t lose any money :)
Never worked on a laptop,
insaneraptor 02-01-2003, 09:23 PM My laptop just shuts off. I know the reason but im too cheap to fix...
Its the powercord. My powercord is broken and it will only give the power to the laptop if its in a certain position... This is why you cannot move the laptop.
Its pretty sucky but you get used to it...
Neo3Net 02-01-2003, 10:12 PM Maybe this its Crashing? There is an option in Windows XP that if it crashes it just reboots instead of displaying any message.
To make it notify you do the following:
Right Click on "My Computer" >>> Select Properties >>>> Click the "Advanced" tab >>> Click the "Settings" button under Startup and Recovery >>> Uncheck the Automatically Reboot box
Hope that helps.
WPT Kyle 02-01-2003, 10:14 PM Done, thanks Sav, I hope this stops it, I'll let you guys know if it does:D
Neo3Net 02-01-2003, 10:25 PM No Prob, I had that problem with my computer a while back. This way if it does crash. You will know about it and can format and reinstall windows....
shaunewing 02-01-2003, 11:31 PM My laptop (Toshiba) used to do this - they called it spontaneous shutdowns. It would happen whenever I was installing a complex program, playing games, running things like photoshop, etc.
There was a technical bulletin on their website (Toshiba US, Toshiba Australia is useless) saying that it was a conflict between the touchpad and bios.
The bulletin suggested to download the latest bios. I did, and I haven't seen the problem since.
ConcreteHost - have a look on Dell's support website and see if there are any technical bulletins on your model of this nature. If not, then try updating the bios anyway - they should have a newer version on there for you.

WPT Kyle 02-01-2003, 11:42 PM will do, thanks shaun
Artashes 02-02-2003, 01:52 AM Kyle, I had the same thing, only with my PC.
And just like rockergrrl mentioned, I had a power supply problem. I'd say you take it to the service right away because it certainly is very dangerous. In my case it got overheated and then blew up, killing every single thing inside: motherboard, drivers, network cards, floppy, CD, DVD, well - everything except for my old Hard Drive...
Don't take that chance.
Neo3Net 02-02-2003, 02:41 AM Artashes, as I was reading your post I thought you were going to say "It blew up killing everyone in the service center" It sure is late, time to go to bed. :)
pattox 02-02-2003, 03:03 AM Yeah, does anyone know anything about boats? For about the last 3-4 weeks my Impulse 120 Outboard has been leaking from the trim and i cant seem to explain it :D

Now that certainly would've been interesting. :D
"IT'S GONNA BLOW! PUT DOWN YOUR ISSUE OF PCWORLD AND DROP YOUR BAG OF PUFFED CHEETOS AND RUN, IT'S THE GRIM REAPER'S LAPTOP FROM HELL!"
Okay, now I'm going to bed...
WPT Kyle 02-02-2003, 09:58 AM Now I am officially scared to go near my laptop due to the fear of it blowing up while I type:D
shaunewing 02-02-2003, 10:10 AM :D
Don't worry, as long as it's not sitting on your lap whilst you're exposed (a certain news article comes to mind :D) then all should be fine.
Laptops by their nature have a tendency to generate a lot of heat. Mine has a fan outlet on the side; I use it as a hand warmer in the winter :stickout:

Artashes 02-02-2003, 01:23 PM Guys, you should have seen my PC. It literally blew up... it was all black and burned inside!!!

You're lucky it wasn't only your PC.
In 1995 I was with some friends of mine at my house when we noticed a lot of smoke coming from the direction of their house.
We walked over to have a look - it was their house; it turned out their PC had blown up (or monitor, I forget exactly which) and the house was on fire too
Fortunately the house wasn't destroyed, but was badly damaged.
