View Full Version : Site5.com Dedicated Servers
MCHost-Marc 05-15-2001, 07:52 PM I was wondering a few things about the Site5.com dedicated servers. I noticed that on some packages they offer 100GB data transfer and 128 IP's.
If i would create 128 hosting packages on that server, all of them would have less than 1GB data transfer ...or is it possible to host several websites under 1 IP address?
Thanks,
Marc
Planet Z 05-15-2001, 07:58 PM The majority of shared hosting is virtual, meaning each domain doesn't have its own IP. The only reason a domain would need its own IP is if it was being used as an anonymous FTP server or something like that. Most sites don't want/need that, so you just stick 'em on the same IP.
In fact, most hosts/backbones strongly discourage doing IP-based hosting (one domain per IP).

Annette 05-15-2001, 08:01 PM Think in terms of averages and realities instead of being bound by those types of specs alone.
There are very few clients who will consume anywhere near their bandwidth allotment. Over 3/4 of the sites we host use less than 500M/month. Some use virtually none. You'll find that you can put quite a number of sites on a single server without any degradation in server performance if you manage it properly. And of course, you can always get more IPs for the box. Even if you use IP-less hosting, you'll still need to monitor your bandwidth usage - but you'll still be able tp play those averages.
MCHost-Marc 05-15-2001, 09:43 PM I've been thinking about their 3500 Series, 3525 Server Plan which includes Dual P3 866 Processor, 512 MB RAM, 30 GB IDE Hard Drive and 150 GB Bandwidth. I personally think that the server should be able to handle about ...250-300 websites? What do you guys think?
Thanks :)

What Annette says here is right. In fact all shared hosting services is being played on averages, whether bandwidth or webspace. There are many people who would be attracted by offers of webspace of 200-500 MB for low prices. Actually, very few will ever use even 50% of this space. Most sites seem to use something
between 5-10 MB including email space so
500 such sites on a server would mean 10 * 500 = 5000 MB !.
In case of bandwidth, it is even worse. Many sites hardly have 5-6 visitors viewing probably 5 pages of 40k each. That would make it 6 * 5 * 40 = 1200k per day or 36 mb a month. Adding email traffic would probably make it 100-120 mb a month. This is still a low figure.
Having a significant number of bigger sites would of course mean less play on averages but will probably
be compensated by increased prices.
If you have many servers, then things can be balanced nicely.
Annette 05-15-2001, 10:57 PM 250-300 is about average. If you tend to group up a bunch of tiny sites, you'd likely get more on the box. If you're just starting out, that's a good figure to shoot for - make sure that server performance is always in your mind, though, as you start adding accounts. As mentioned, once you get severl servers going, balancing gets easier.
MCHost-Marc 05-16-2001, 02:11 PM I was gonna start out reselling and then moving to a dedicated server. But now i'm thinking about starting out with a dedicated server and low prices ...
Site5.com seems interesting since their servers have everything installed already (Perl, mySQL, PHP, etc.) and most of the administration is web-based ...while if i choose WeinBar.com or BurstNET, i have to install all those features myself, right? :(
Marc
BurstNET 05-16-2001, 04:51 PM Incorrect....our servers, come with everything pre-installed just as Site5's servers.
Site5 and BurstNET servers are both based on CPanel/WHM software.
