Three months back, I was looking for specifics on what one needed to know for server management. I didn't find what I was looking for, and was asked to share any information I found.

Since I haven't found it, I'm writing it. I got my own dedicated server less than a month ago and am writing step by step instructions as I go along. For possibly the first time, anyone interested in learning what they need to know in order to get their own server, will be able to get specific information on it.

This can help many of those who can afford a dedicated server, and may need one, but have been held back by a lack of knowledge. Poor support at many companies (too many) or resource intensive applications (like UBB and other some other forum programs), rule out shared servers for many.

To learn more, go to my new server site, http://techcellence.net (http://techcellence.net/) and look on the right side menu. There are many informative resources along with the new dedicated server management for beginners pages.

Some of the information is specific to Dialtone Internet, the company I selected for my server, though much applies generally to any Linux server.

Note: the left side menu is about services I offer, so be aware of that fact. This is not a cheap trick to get new customers. I got my own server to offer better service for the sites I already host, and for my own informational site about scuba diving. I am not aggressively seeking new customers, nor soliciting for them here.

I mentioned a new site about sharing information and resources about hosting and design several weeks ago. You can find me there and discuss related issues further. the site is Share, at http://share.virtual-support.net/ I'm the moderator for the forum about server management.

Share is not about finding a host, but about programs, resources, and related matters once you do. Think of it as the next step after this site for many of us.
