First of all, I'm a VPS newb so pse be gentle :)

After I signed up for my VPS server, naturally I was given the IP and hostname and saw I had the ability to change this, which I did and everything is setup fine and working. I'm also using private name servers.

So currently this is how things stand:

I was given a hostname: theirname.mydomain.com - which I changed and is now myname.mydomain.com.

The mydomain.com is also being used for the private name servers which are ns1.mydomain.com and ns2.mydomain.com and I have a hosting account and site setup on mydomain.com.

Now the thing is myname.domain.com looks like a subdomain address and it appears in various places and my concern is that someone may try browse to it, when I did I get the following message being displayed:

Template Error: The template file must be given -

at this url,

http://myname.mydomain.com/cgi-sys/defaultwebpage.cgi

Now my question is - how do I go about setting it up so that if and when someone browses to that it will redirect to my main website which is myotherdomain.com.

I obviously cant try setup subdomain called 'myname' and redirect in cpanel for mydomain.com and after contacting support for advice they told me to edit the DNS zone for myname.mydomain.com - but I'm getting error messages after saving - so their solution does not working.

Surely it must be possible and if someone could tell me how to do this, I'd really appreciate it. BTW I am on a fully managed VPS. :)

the error message after editing the dns zone?

I was told to change the one A record of the hostname to CNAME and then where the IP address was change that to the domain name that I'm using for the nameservers and to remember to add the period after that.

The error that it gives is as follows:

There were errors in the new zone which have been highlighted below. Please press the back button and try again!

myname.mydomain.com: CNAME and other data
myname.mydomain.com: CNAME and other data

those two lines are highlighted in pink - the one at the record I tried changing and at the MX record.

Just for additional clarity on the instructions I was given from my web host that the error msg as mentioned - this is what I was told to do

You can set this up in the DNS zonefile actually. If you go into "edit a DNS zone" in WHM. There should be an entry for myname.mydomain.com. In there you'll need to find the line:

myname.mydomain.com. 14400 IN A xx.xx.xxx.xx

From here you'll need to change the type from "A" to "CNAME" and then instead of the IP address you'll put mydomain.com. Please note that you'll need to have a period after mydomain.com so the entry will look like:

myname.mydomain.com. 14400 IN CNAME mydomain.com.

the error msg is in pink at the line above and MX record.

I was told to change the one A record of the hostname to CNAME and then where the IP address was change that to the domain name that I'm using for the nameservers and to remember to add the period after that.

Well it certainly seems our experts here are not the gurus they claim to be, either that or they not willing to part with advice or suggestions and help!

If your on a fully managed VPS, you should contact support. They will help you into finding the problem. I can't really understand what your problem is. Please try and specify it.

1. U need to decide where you want to host your DNS.
2. If you decide to host your DNS in another server which is mydomain.com
3. You need to set the zone of DNS to point to your VPS.

You could create and upload a landing page with message/forwarder, and then simply make sure your www directory is set right.
