Hi there to all of you!
I need some advice: I started a www homepage with Classic Hosting and cancelled within 2 weeks. The bandwidth consumed would have ruined me.... One reason that I settled with Classic Hosting was beacause they promised a 30-day money-back guarantee, no questions asked...
I received email confirmation about the cancellation and that my money was supposed to be refunded, but my credit card company says the information is not enough.... (see below)
From Classic Hosting:"Thank you for your messages concerning your account. Our accounts department has processed your account termination. We confirm that the original sum billed to your credit card was $310.35 (being $22.95 x 12 months service and domain name registration for one year at $34.95). We are refunding a sum of $275.40 to your credit card, being the full 12 months service charge. Because domain registrations are processed immediately, they are non-cancellable and non-refundable, therefore we are withholding the domain registration fee of $34.95 to cover for this.

Sincerely,

Customer Service

I have contacted the company that took money from my card, but they just reply:
WorldPay wrote:
"Unfortunately, we are unable to help you with this query because we are the Payment Processor for the site you made a purchase from and not the owner of
the store. As such, we are unable to process any refunds or cancel any transactions on behalf of our customers . We have copied in the owner of the site directly and are sure they will be able to help you with this matter."

Classic Hosting do not reply to my emails, and I have no clue how to progress! I would like to contract legal advisors, but is that the proper way to do it?
Is there some "legal rights company" on the internet that can be of assistance in this matter.

All ideas are welcomed, I sure need the money...

Best regards // Fredrik

Why do you expect a refund of the domain regsitration fee? There isn't a host out there that will refund this fee since it isn't refundable from the registrar. (At least none that I have found).

Besides, you received something for your fee - you own the rights to the domain name for a full year, regardless of who you host with. Because you have received a service for your $34.95, namely domain registration, there are simply no grounds for a refund. Ask around, I am sure the other hosts here will concur that this fee cannot be refunded, nor should it since the client will have ownership rights for at least a year on the domain name.

At least on the surface, it sure looks like this host is playing fair and being very professional about your refund. My $0.02.

p.s. it also states right on their web site:

"Important notice: Because domain registrations are processed immediately, they are non-cancellable and non-refundable. Domains may be transferred to any hosting provider at any time." {http://www.classichosting.com/guarantee.html}

Hi and thanks for the reply!
Sorry for not being correct: I have absolutely nothing against that they will not refund the domain registration fee: I am fully aware of that and I do not expect to receive that money.
However, I am talking about the sum of $275.40 that I have not received, even thought Classic Hosting informas that I will be refunded, the debit company says their hands are ties and Classic Hosting does not respond!
Sorry for the mistake, maybe you understand my problem now.
Thanks again and Best Regards // Fredrik

Well, that makes more sense! What time frame are we talking here? When did you request the refund, when did you get the email? I just got a refund on my personal card that took 5 days to show up in my account from the day the merchant ran it through.

If it goes on too long, do a chargeback. I think you have somehting like 6 months to dispute the charge. I know all too well that as an internet merchant, if you dispute the charge - they instantly lose. You will get a full refund of your money. If they are witholding your refund for a long time, then I would send one last email informing them that you want proff of refund by a certain time, or you will instruct your bank that the charge will be disputed. That oughta get their attention. 'specially since then they *will* lose the domain registration fee...and incur a chargeback fee. Most reputable hosts will avoid this, and from the tone of the email it sounded like they were handling it professionally. Let us know what happens!

Hi again...
I recieved the cancellation confirmation 2001-01-15.
I forwarded it to my bank, but they say it is not enough!?
So, Classic Hosting keep ignoring my mails, my bank say the cancellation confirmation letter is not enough, and WorlPay can not do anything.
PLEASE: what am I supposed to do??
I am getting very angry with Classic Hosting, but I have no clue what to do.
Any recomendations will be most appriciated.

Wow, that is a long time to wait...

At this point, if it were me, I would send one more email indicating yor next step will be to protest the charge. If that doesn't get their attention, call the bank and do it.

Was the original charge actually done on a major credit card? Like MasterCard/Visa, Amex, etc? Because it should be easy (ridiculously easy, as many hosts are aware) to get a chargeback going. Let us know how you make out. But 4 months is WAY beyond reasonable.

Hi and thanks for your concern in this!
I used my Visa card so it should not be a problem since it should be regarded as a major credit card.
I send email to Classic Hosting daily, but they refuse to answer. I regarded them as rather honest and professional to deal with, but now I am not to sure.
The problem seems to be with my bank as well, since even though Classic Hosting sent me this email (which has been cut-in in my first post) they do not approve that to be enough. Is that standard bank policy?
What other alternatives does the www host provider have to refund my money, than to inform me and assure that they indeed has made a "re-charge".
I must say that I appriciate your input in this matter!

It's simple: if there has been no credit applied to your card (check your statements), do a chargeback. Your bank will do this for you.

Your bank (or any reputable bank for that matter) cannot reverse charges based on some email you got from your host. You have to go through the formal process of protesting the charge - the bank will have forms for you to fill out and explain your situation and reason for reversing the charge -but I would never expect them to just credit your card because you present them with an email.

Give Classic a day or so to respond, then call Visa - you will win, it's just a matter of the paperwork. Good luck!
