 I know CobaltRacks has earned a bad rep, but bear with me.
I seem to be in the DNS/Domain catch 22 scenario.
Being somewhat of a newbie, I can not get the DNS to configure even though I have tried several procedures, including ones from CobaltRacks, Cobalt themselves, Interliant, and several user configs. The domain is registered at Tera-byte. I can not seem to get ns1 and ns2 to resolve with Network Solutions. Anyone got a suggestion!

Setting up Virtual DNS Servers

In most cases, it will be to your advantage to use your own server as your primary and secondary DNS. That way, you are in control of your Domain Name Service, so you can add and change entries yourself - quickly and easily. Furthermore, this way you will also save on DNS alias costs, as you will not need to pay us for that service since we will not be providing it. To set-up your Superb RaQ server to function as ns1 and ns2.yourdomain.com, follow the following steps.

Click Control Panel on the Administrator site.
Click on the Network icon near the top of the screen.
Change the Cobalt Server Name to ns1 (Note: it is possible to use an IP other than your server IP for your ns1. However, it will make continuous operation of the nameserver more complex, so we strongly suggest that you do change your server name to ns1.)
Ensure that the Domain Name is yourdomain.com (where yourdomain.com is the domain name which you want to use as the ns1.yourdomain.com primary DNS server); if it is not, change it.
Click on Save Changes at the bottom of the screen.
Click Control Panel on the Administrator site.
Click the Services button at the top of the screen.
Click Parameters in the table, next to DNS.
Select Add Address (A) Record and add your domain name record (enter the hostname, domain name and IP), then click on Update List when done.
Repeat step (9) above and make sure to enter an address record for ns1.yourdomain.com (where ns1 is the hostname, and yourdomain.com your domain name) going to the main/server IP. Ensure that the "Automatic Reverse Address Record Generation" box is checked when you do this.
If needed, add other domains and hostnames to DNS.
Ensure that you have at least one additional IP (in addition to your main server IP) allocated. If you do not, contact Superb RaQ support to request an additional IP. You can continue only when you have at least one additional IP allocated to your server, and setup as a virtual web-site. (You must first set-up the IP that you will use for this as a virtual web-site. Otherwise, it will be unreachable.)
Select Add Address (A) Record. (You must be still at the DNS service parameters to do this.)
Enter ns2 as the hostname and yourdomain.com (where that is your domain name) as the domain. Enter an IP address you have been allocated for this. Ensure that the "Automatic Reverse Address Record Generation" box is checked when you do this. Click on Update List when done.Note: you can not use the same/server IP for both, ns1 and ns2! You must use different IPs for the two Virtual DNS servers.
Edit the SOA (Start of Authority) settings, by clicking on the pencil icon to the left of the "Start of Authority (SOA) Configuration" line (underneath the DNS setting title).
Enter ns2.yourdomain.com, where yourdomain.com is your domain name, as the Secondary Name Server. Also, ensure that ns1.yourdomain.com is the Primary Name Server; if not, change it. Click on Update SOA Record when done. Note: you will need to do this change for each and every domain name (but not for each and every hostname.domainname.com, just for each second level domain).
Click on Save Changes to DNS Server when you are done. This will save the changes and restart the name server, which is required for your newly added records to be in effect. You can now use ns1.yourdomain.com and ns2.yourdomain.com when you are registering new domain names as the nameservers. Remember that you must do steps 15 & 16, in addition to the standard DNS entry addition procedures above, when you add any new domains.

Setting up Additional Virtual DNS Servers

It is possible to set-up a Virtual DNS server for each unique IP on the server (you can have more than one VDNS set on the server). To create ns1 and ns2.seconddomain.com (and on) Virtual DNS servers, follow these steps.

Add the domain, per the instructions above, to DNS. Also, add ns1 and ns2 forward and reverse records, using two unique IPs (not used for any other VDNS).
Change SOA configuration to use ns1 and ns2.seconddomain.com as nameservers for seconddomain.com. Also change it that way for any other domains that will be using it (e.g. ns1 and ns2.seconddomain.com would be the nameservers for thirddomain.com as well, if it was to use ns1 and ns2.seconddomain.com); you must do this for any and all domains that will be using that VDNS set as their nameservers.
Ensure that the IPs you are using for VDNS hosts are first set-up as virtual web sites. Otherwise, the IP will not be reachable: it must be first set-up as a virtual site in order to be "up." :o

Even though the post is old, I would add the following to the thread just in case someone runs into this:

Based on this post I did:
http://www.webhostingtalk.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=237383#post237383

I added my own ns1, and ns2, but later I got a call from the hosting company saying what happen :) hehehe I took over their DNS based on my settings I added which are:

[quote]
ns1.enigmabiz.com 65.170.79.2
ns2.enigmabiz.com 65.170.79.3
[quote]

They used the same, so I got quote a bit a traffic from their site :).

I got 2 IPs, am I support to have:
-------------
ns1.enigmabiz.com 65.170.79.187
ns1.enigmabiz.com 65.170.79.188
-------------

Currently I have DNS turned off and use mydomain.com as a dns server and also am looking into setup for MX Record to handle email.

I added MX Record into the control panel but how can it work when that part of MX Record is under the DNS settings and that section is disabled.

I couldn't find much help on that here because the search does not allow a 2 character search (MX) but I found still a little info on that.

Otherwise I can always use ns1.serverrack.net where the RAQ is located at. Any input on this issue is appreciated.

In "manage.opensrs.net" if you were to add the names and IP addresses of your own name servers under "Manage Nameserver Hosts" you could manage your own domains, right? If the raq your running has a couple static IP's and DNS running that would be so much easier then working with ones upstream on every change. The only drawback would possibly be the lack of redundancy.

Am I right that this can be done this way? And, is the following how to set it up?

Works now.. I removed all mx records from the server and left them on mydomain.com. I even removed the mail.* from the mx don't need it.

Man.. mydomain.com does a hell of a service (good thing) for free I tell you.

Man... I am sometimes overdoing things on the raq that do not need to be done but I am learning and man I like it.. ! :D
