All,

I'm just about to pickup a new Cobalt RaQ 4r ... as in buy (not lease) and plug it into works backend for use an an Intranet & Development Server... and general messing around.

I've had a look at: http://www.cobalt.com/support/download/raq4.eng.html several times - and noted the massive number of RaQ 4 patches. Are they ALL required? Specifically - I want the RaQ to be secure (of course) and I'd like to be able to run DNS services on it using the DNS Control Panel. What version of BIND does a 4r ship with? Can I upgrade to 9.2.3 and still use the DNS Control Panel? ... I'd appreciate feedback - especially as per what patches I should apply....

Cobalt provides periodic system updates that contain most of the previous patches -- similar to service packs on the Microsoft side (except cobalt releases them a lot more often). If your Raq is fresh from the factory, most of the updates should be installed. The control panel will have a list of recently installed patches which can help you judge the last time the machine was upgraded.

Also, Raq 4's use a simple update method. Simply plug the URL for the update package into the control panel and click. :)

This had a lot of good info and links about cobalt security and security in general.
